It's dark and dank. It smells terrible. It's full of black mold and cockroaches. It's filled with felons. It has unsanitary bathrooms and showers. The bathroom stalls are so small that you can't close the door, drop your pants and sit down. You have to leave the door open, drop your drawers and sit down and THEN close the stall door.
The breakfasts are usually just cereal and pastries and coffee. The floors are old and wooden and creek when you walk. Sleeping is tough. It's cold and drafty. Yet, through it all, this is home, at least on a temporary basis. It's full of people who talk to themselves, and full of people who wouldn't know personal hygiene if it walked up and called them daddy. Yet there are some good people there. There are people there who will watch your back as well as watch your belongings so no one else steals your stuff. The good people are the ones who are in much the same boat as me, foreclosed on, or laid off from work and lost their homes or apartments.
There are those too who have been addicted to one substance or the other and now have their life clean of those things but have yet to get back the basics they lost when they were practicing their addiction.
And then too, there are those in the shelter who are just trying to get over on the system and have a free place to stay regardless of the conditions.
Aside from shooing away cocroaches at your meals, most of the lunches and dinners are filling if not tasty too. Of course with any kind of institutional cooking, it has to be somewhat bland instead of spicey and if anyone wants to add salt and pepper they can. With all the roaches though, it makes one wonder how much got in the food. We'll try not to think about that one too much though, since it's kinda depressing.
The good news though is that sometime in December of this year, we're supposed to move next door into a 6 million dollar facility and the one we're in, which is an old elementary school, will be torn down. From what I hear, the school building is over 60 years old and falling apart.
The staff is all resident staff, and 2 nurses and one bookkeeper and then of course the owner who comes during the day. The nurses don't live on site either. Interenet usage is limited to 15 minutes a day, which is hardly time to do anything at all, especially look for work.
The neighborhood is so bad that they actually tell you which streets to NOT walk down or you'll be in an area of crack houses and armed robberies. Why they would spend 6 large, putting a new building in that kind of area is beyond me, but hey, it's not my money either so, I'm not going to question it.
My bed is in the back of the school gym, and also in the back is someone who quite frankly stinks to high heavens. The sad thing though is that he's a very nice guy, but he's too huge to properly take care of himself.
Before I ended up in the Statesville shelter I worked for a bit on the Obama campaign. In North Carolina we have early voting and I was up at the Mooresville Public Library working handing out flyers as people went in to vote. I guess I was doing too good a job at convincing the undecided to vote for Obama, because the precinct workers succeeded in getting me banned from the table.
So I ended up at Obama headquarters in Mooresville, making calls on behalf of Obama. After I got sent to Statesville, I worked at the campaign headquarters there too till election day. Our county went mostly Republican, but we turned the state of North Carolina blue for the first time in decades.
I was very proud of our work and that we came out a winner. Now it's up to Obama to show his stuff and not let us down. We put our faith in God, and nothing else matters, but it'll be nice to see a mere mortal do good things for this country. It can't be any worse than Bush's job of leading our country into 2 wars and a disasterous economic hardship that he put us in with his unwillingness to regulate certain factions of corporate America. At least we won't have to worry about Palin for 4 yrs.
Now there's a crazy thought!
I thought the first paragraph was describing his campaign plane.
It’s too bad WAMU went tits up, because they could have gotten this guy into a $500K condo in Seattle, nothing down, Interest only, with a guaranteed federal bailout at the end of three years when the ARM adjusted...
The socialist rats and thier leader who will be in total control come January 20th know that it is far easier to pummell the middleclass into submission and dispair as we see by this poor chap, than it is to help re build this guys hope for a better future. CONTROL AND DEPENDENCY is the name of the game. If you build a new man out of this poor sap he will start to think for himself and support himself and be responsible for himself, and we can’t have that can we!
This is the new face of the most impoverished among us; they are a disproportionately obese group. This is one of many reasons why the so-called greatest financial crisis since the Great Depression does not look much like the Great Depression.
Typical Hussein voter...
At least that song sounded good.
Amazing << Hear this. Feel this, and tell me that this isn't music.
Groove to Black Violin EPK, too.

The mentally deficient/mentally ill were an integral voting bloc for Barack Hussein Obama this year.
Remember, his own family lives in conditions about equal to this. Kenyan mudhuts, Boston housing projects, flophouses, whatever. Hope.
a mere mortal? this is blasphemy. back to the flophouse.
I think the “O” better help out his step-brother before he helps this guy ....
Is he seeing double?
There's the war on terror (which America was dragged into on 9/11) but what's this other war he is talking about?
Thought for the first couple of lines that he lived in prison but then I realized that not even felons are allowed to live like that. Only Inner-City Democrats.
Doesn't sound like anyplace I've ever lived either. But then, when I was kid and we were Democrats, we were Southern, Baptist, Christian, Conservatives and now I live about as far North as I can get, and I'm Baptist, Christian, Conservative, and Republican...
Cereal AND pastries AND coffee???? I usually only get cereal OR a PBJ sandwich and coffee and I work!!!
Reminds me of a time I was fixing a non working A/C on the roof of a Federal Prison, sweaty, HOT, about 97'F, and no clouds. Worked a few hours, decided to go eat lunch and walked through the kitchen to get outside.
The inmates were eating turkey, dressing or fried chicken, green beans, corn bread and ice tea with jello for desert.
I went to my work van and pulled out a warm bologna sandwich and a warm coke. I thought to myself.... whats wrong with this picture???? PS, this is a TRUE story!
I'm so glad I have no kids to pass this abortion of a country on to!
This is my favorite line -
Why they would spend 6 large, putting a new building in that kind of area is beyond me, but hey, it's not my money either so, I'm not going to question it.
It hasn't occurred to him that
1 - This is where this building is needed and
2 - They couldn't get any land near the Edwards, Obama, Kerry or Kennedy compounds.
Have only one question; 'who' owns the roach trap, elementary school building he now calls home?
Have only one question; 'who' owns the roach trap, elementary school building he now calls home?
Didn't they pay you? Obama did share the campiagn donations wealth?
In 6 months the 6 million dollar facility will be just as big a dump as the previous one.
Well, as Goebbels said:
“inspire a lesser man to a greater cause, and he will do whatever you ask”
His conditions are only matched by his commitment to an Obamao win, scoff if we will, he had nothing better to do, and all day to do it, and that “it” was ensure a victory.
It sure sounds like some kind of homeless "shelter" to me -- it serves breakfast, has 2 nurses, etc. Not your typical flophouse. He's unwilling to say it, even though he sure knows the political talking points, but the 'who' is almost certainly the taxpayers. And that's who put up the 6 million for the new building too no doubt.
Notice how he gripes about the state of cleanliness in his "house" but never gets around to doing anything about it -- but why should he, that's the government's job.
Swing on out to AZ sometime and take a tour of Sheriff Joe’s Tent City. No AC for you work on, but plenty of bologna to go around ;-)
Well, for sure the six-million dollar home they are moving into; is a Gov. subsidy but not sure about this school; or perhaps 'he has got it wrong'.
That said; I know there are a number of schools that have been purchased privately and are used as apartments; or sold as condos. . .or 'whatever'. Perhaps this is one of those; and it just went downhill to where it is now a 'down and out' shelter. Pehaps Gov rents it. . .(?)
I don't know; but IF this building has an owner; and he comes there daily; would be nice to know 'who' he is. . .and whether he is a Demrat or a Repub/lol. . .
And yes, if the bug problem is that bad; perhaps the 'residents' could help out here. Am wondering if the 'residents' are in any way required to be 'responsible'. . .
For 15.00 they could buy cleaning supplies and bug spray and for another 25.00 they could buy paint and brushes. So - for 100.00 (I am sure they could find some good liberal to help them out with 100.00) and they have plenty of Obama volunteers that are now out of work, they wouldn’t have a flop house any more.
If this article was meant to make me feel sorry for the shelter, It just made me angry at the group that are running it. What happened to “Will work for food”?
“Look, you need a meal and we need help cleaning up this place. We will do our part if you do yours.”
It has always galled me that government housing, no matter how new, is soon trashed. Being poor doesn’t mean being dirtbags. I bet there are alot of people that would go get a job, if they had to work off ther housing.
Isn’t that the truth. A local lady is the house mother for 4 mentally retarded young men that live together in a group setting. She was so proud that she took them down, got them registered to vote and then had all the boys vote for Obama.
LOL/and now that you mention this. . .wondering 'where IS the reporter' who offered his up close - and personal review of life on the 'obamaplane'. . .
Is this man still working - have his all his limbs; and all his senses; his dog; car and family?
Just sit back and eat your pie, buddy.
What realy boils my gut is how he uses his last sentence to condemn Gov. Sarah Palin as if she was out to kill and destroy the country—which She would NEVER do!
I mean, Sarah hasn’t even finished her first term as Governor and he thinks that He has wisdom and intelligence to judge her as bad or worse than President Bush ?!?1
I’m sorry if my rant bores or rattles anyone...but I am Livid in my soul over people’s cause-less hatred and vileness towards her.
But at the same time, I am also afraid by what I see in this man’s story:
Are we so in comfortable with dirtiness, sewage, discomfort and so gullible as to immediately believe every word from the mouth of a man who actually wasted tax-payer money meant for projects such as this squalor???
Oh Jesus, have Mercy on us....
Way I read this, the guy was campaigning at a polling place. And apparently even North Carolina has laws against doing that.
One of these activists was also working as a poll volunteer, handing out ballots. I guess another poll worker said something to her, because she then got up and paced out 100 feet backwards to a spot outside the "no electioneering" perimeter, and there her comrades continued their "No on Proposition 8" activity of waving signs at passing motorists.
However, their van with an Obama bumper sticker remained within the perimeter for the next 20 minutes, until someone else spoke up about it (thank God) and then they moved their van.
The director and his wife are two of the most caring people on the planet and will go to any length to help those who want to help themselves.
It was an old elementary school [the Avery school IIFC] in the worst part of Statesville [the south side]. It was hardly heated, leaked like crazy, but it beat the hell out of sleeping outside.
Gary West and his wife Patti are the directors. It is operated under and unbrella corp named ‘Diakonos’ dba 5th Street Ministries. [I was an client/employee there a few years back.]
No it was not the taxpayers. It was funded fully through grants and donations.
Take it easy. I read it like this. The dems are scared of Palin even down to the low cadre. It is good news. We all know how much the liberal media is scared of her. Hopefully, people like this wont have any motivation to work for The One in 2012. They will find out that he is half-white after all and used the race card to get elected.
You bet they’re scared of her.
I didn’t know they could vote. I know some mentally ill are kept from voting.
Well - if the mentally ill were not allowed to vote, most Democrats would be “disenfranchised” :)
How would they keep track of them, these kids
were mentally retarded not mentally ill. Would that make a difference? Maybe if they are institutionalized they aren’t able to vote but what about those who are not? These kids had Downs or one had brain damage from a brain infection.
I went to my work van and pulled out a warm bologna sandwich and a warm coke.
Give him a "Grafenwoer, Exercise Urgent Victory" Breakfast. I bet just seeing the scrabbled eggs that have been stored in a can for 7 years would make him appreciate his cereal, pastries and coffee. That might even help the fat guy with his problems.
Oh, and the Grafenwoer coffee was a concentrate. One large drop mixed with boiling water made 10 gallons of a coffee-like-substance.
Or an “Operation Team Spirit” meal with ham & lima beans! Yum-O!
