Christmas trees that have graced the two main libraries at the University of North Carolina won't be displayed this year, after numerous complaints, The Charlotte Observer reported.
The trees have stood in the lobbies of Wilson and Davis libraries at the Chapel Hill campus during December. This year, they are being kept in storage.
Sarah Michalak, the associate provost for university libraries, told the newspaper that she made the decision after several years of complaints from employees and others.
We strive in our collection to have a wide variety of ideas, she said. It doesn't seem right to celebrate one particular set of customs.
It is unusual for a public library to house a display representing one religion, according to the Durham County library system's deputy director Catherine Mau.
Michalak, who has been the head librarian at UNC for the past four years, told the Observer that at least a dozen employees have complained about the Christian display. Students, however, have been mum on the trees.

Whodathunkit?
Do they observe Martin Luther King’s birthday?
Valentine’s Day?
4th of July?
Labor Day?
Arbor Day?
Gay Pride week?
do they observe any holiday or celebrations? If so then they are guilty of observing one set of traditions over others, and guilty of the behavior that they say they are opposed to.
Lord we need St. Bernard of Clairvaux.(Along with The Teutonic Knights.)
The only problem is that christmas trees aren’t a Christian symbol.
Following this logic, the trees will be re-instated if someones complains about their absence?
On the one hand, phooey on them. On the other hand, I’d be happy to have all non-reading related junk out of the library, permanently.
Let's all remember to call the college and complain about their observance of MLK Day.
Are Christmas cookies agnostic?
Not to nit-pick,but putting “Christ” before anything makes it connected to Christianity,at least in the minds of Christians and seriously, who else has a dog in the fight?
The CSA battle flag was (and still is to some) a symbol of honor and now is considered by most a pro-slavery rag—to make a negative comparison.
Amen.
I bet the staff want to work Christmas too, don’t they?
With Jesse dead and his old Senate seat gone Democrat, the Democrats can flex their muscle in NC, and the sheeple haven’t a clue there either.

Complaints? About a Christmas tree? What a bunch of ‘tards.

Email and inquire if the staff intends to take the holiday off with pay or will they work since It doesn't seem right to celebrate one particular set of customs.
Then let the jerks miss a wonderful Christmas.
Not that I have or care about xmas trees (my religious choice at home)...but probably because so many New Englanders and Californians moved there.
If I went to school there I would design me a t-shirt with a Christmas tree on it.
If I remember correctly, this is the same college that forced first year and transfer students to read an Islamic book. But they don’t want anyone to even look at a Christmas tree? What a shame that we have to expose our children to these lefty traitors.
I don’t believe anyone individuals complained. College heads just like to cave. It’s in their job description.
I asked "why" to the security/facilities group... all I got back was a shrug shoulders response (they didn't want to say it, but I knew why... some panty-waste... probably 1 or 2 in an office of nearly 1,000 employees complained).
MERRY CHRISTMAS!
Correct. It’s beyond any real discomfort, just the pronouncement that somebody (allegedly) sez “I’m offended” as an official pronouncement is enough. The social research folks have turned America into ‘toon land. It’s amusing in a twisted sort of way.
