We celebrate Thanksgiving Day 2008 at a time when America's financial fortunes have seldom been worse -- yet our political fortunes are brightening as we approach the end of one presidency and the beginning of a hope-filled new administration.
More than 10 million of us are out of work, and hundreds of thousands can't afford our mortgages, face foreclosure or are in bankruptcy. Banks and credit markets are failing, and even Detroit's Big Three automakers are fighting desperately for survival.
Resilient nation
While this may truly feel like the worst of times, it also is a perfect time to remember and give thanks for what we do have: family and friends, a resilient and ever-practical national spirit, bountiful natural resources and a political system capable of inventing and reinventing itself.
Indeed, giving thanks to God for our blessings despite our hardships was foremost in President Abraham Lincoln's mind when, in 1863, he proclaimed Thanksgiving Day a permanent national holiday.
Over the years, this day has evolved into one of feasting, football, parades and festivities. It also is a somber time when we pause to reflect on those things that are dearest to us: family, close friends, personal sustenance, peace and good will toward our neighbors and fellow human beings.
In addition to the economic travails, our country is at war on two fronts on this holiday -- and many of our fathers, mothers, brothers, sisters and children are fighting for the liberties that too many of us take as a given.
President Lincoln hoped to bring a disastrously ruptured country together by reminding North and South alike that the bonds we share are greater than the seemingly intractable problems that separate us. And though he ultimately succeeded, the divisions were so great that vestiges linger with us today.
Emulating Lincoln
It is more than a little ironic that 145 years after President Lincoln's thanks-giving proclamation, the country's new president-elect, Barack Obama, has set as one of his primary missions an effort to bridge the divide of America's warring political factions. Mr. Obama has been unabashed in his admiration of President Lincoln and his desire to emulate him.
History teaches us that no matter the challenges or odds against us, America has found a way to face the challenges and persevere. This holiday season may not signify the best of times for our country, but with our freedoms and liberties intact, we have much more to be thankful for than we have to fret about.
How lucky this nation is to have a man of Mr. Linc...er, Mr. Obama's qualifications. (Where are those qualifications, anyway?) To bring Communist together with his 'friend the Conservative?
Is there any way you want to brought together with this gaggle of leftist and outright communists.
That would mean we'd have to hug and kiss Maxine Waters. (Ugh!) Not our kind of people.
Don't worry. Be happy.
Yeah....he’s ‘the one’ alright....
No despair at our house on Thanksgiving.
We had a blast.
When the door closes on the outside world now chock-full full of boogey men and evil happenings, the inside is transferred into a wonderland!
And to whom do we express our thanks? Ourselves, I suppose.
The great thing about the Miami Herald is that it never requires a comic section.
Yes, Americans may have to cut back to only one television without the premium channels! /sarc This writer wouldn't know financial misfortune if it bit him in his ...
Maybe he'll get back to me when he's growing vegetables in his backyard. Imagine if these folks were hit with a real depression?
“We had a blast.”
Us too! The most asked question at the Thanksgiving table:
Why MSM keeps hammering us with BAD NEWS?
We got all the bad news we could handle on Nov. 4th.
And learn how to make gravy from the drippings after frying baloney.
We can save money by stopping the delivery of our newspaper (it hates conservatives, anyway)and help them down the road to Chapter 11, where they belong.
Such will be the headlines from the MSM as his excellency ascends to his throne. It's all better now. Ding dong, the wicked witch is dead.
But the wizard is just an old man behind a curtain, and the flying monkeys have at least 2 years to crap on everything.

Gee, ain’t it surprising that the Herald left out the cause of any financial problems the nation is facing. Namely LIBERALISM!
Maybe I’m crazy, but I’m not seeing it - I’m still making what I did last month and the month before that....we had a great Thanksgiving - traveled across 3 states to be with family and shopped and did the tourist thing. We weren’t alone!!
Excellent idea. We should encourage all folks to SAVE money by canceling newspapers and cable news. After all, the economic news is soooo bad we can't afford them anymore. It would be terrible to see Brian, Katie, and their friends out of work. /sarc
“The worst of times?”
1933 was the worst of times. 1942 was the worst of times. You could even say that 1968 was the worst of times because it seemed like the country was tearing itself apart. But 2008 is “the worst of times?” Dear God, these people have no perspective whatsoever.

" Even though things have been on a downturn lately, this is nothing like the Great Depression with twenty percent or more unemployment. We really had skinny Americans back then. And isn't it ironic that the party that is most responsible for this economic tailspin has had their candidate elected into the presidency even though practically everything he says is a lie. Why, we can't even get this clown to reveal his birth certificate. We might have illegally elected a foreigner. Isn't America grand?
