The reality is that the market is very much about perception and emotion, and as such can be affected by the media. Part of the reason the dot com bubble lasted as long as it did during the Clinton administration is that the media were such cheerleaders for the Clinton economy. We were being told at that time how the Dow was headed for over 15,000, and recessions were a thing of the past. I don't think I've ever heard as much glee from the media about an up day on Wallstreet as I routinely did during the Clinton administration, and it will be the same with Obama. It will be hard to stomach, but the upside is that at least you can make some of your money back while the media paints a rosy picture of the ‘Obama economy’. Ultimately, we have to get back to sound fundamentals or we will continue to have these wild swings in the market.
