Ted Kaufman to succeed Biden in Senate
Delaware governor Ruth Ann Minner (D) has selected Joe Biden’s longtime senior adviser Ted Kaufman as Biden’s successor on an interim basis, paving the way for Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden to succeed his father in two years.
“He’ll walk in there with all the experience he needs to do the job for Delaware,” Minner said at a press conference this afternoon, emphasizing that he will only be serving for the remaining two years of Biden’s unexpired term.
Kaufman is a co-chair on Biden's transition team and is one of the Delaware senator's closest advisers. He spent about two decades serving as his chief of staff.
He is currently president of Public Strategies, a political and management consulting firm based in Wilmington, Delaware.
Kaufman said he is not interested in serving in the Senate long-term, and will not be running for re-election in 2010.
“I do not think that Delaware’s appointed senator should spend the next two years running for office,” Kaufman said. “I will do this job to the best of my ability to serve the people of Delaware.”
Minner’s decision to appoint a caretaker like Kaufman paves the way for Biden’s son, Attorney General Beau Biden, to run for his father’s Senate seat in two years. Beau Biden, a member of Delaware’s National Guard, is currently preparing to be deployed to the Middle East, and took himself out of the running for the appointment.

He is not serving anywhere hot, except perhaps after hours in the coed showers. The Republican party has two years to find somebody with a plausible chance to defeat this guy.
Hunters son has worked in the private sector and served three tours of duty commanding men in combat. He is one of the VERY few new members of congress who has any inkling of how the military works and what it means to actually fight in smally unit combat. Hunter will stand as a counterweight to Patrick Murphy and (soon to be) Beau Biden who the left will champion as combat heroes.

How about repealing the 17th amendment and eliminating Senate elections altogether?
I believe that eliminating 33 of the most expensive elections that occur every two years is the keystone to getting money out of politics.
Presidential elections occur once every four years. House elections occur every two years, but their districts are too small to mount an effective national fundraising campaign.
It's the 33 statewide Senate elections that occur every two years that demand the money. These elections are what the national parties are structured around (see how Schumer chaired the national Senate election committee?).
End the Senate elections, and you break the need for national campaign financing as a perpetual machine.
