Ted Kaufman to succeed Biden in Senate

Delaware governor Ruth Ann Minner (D) has selected Joe Biden’s longtime senior adviser Ted Kaufman as Biden’s successor on an interim basis, paving the way for Delaware Attorney General Beau Biden to succeed his father in two years.

“He’ll walk in there with all the experience he needs to do the job for Delaware,” Minner said at a press conference this afternoon, emphasizing that he will only be serving for the remaining two years of Biden’s unexpired term.

Kaufman is a co-chair on Biden's transition team and is one of the Delaware senator's closest advisers. He spent about two decades serving as his chief of staff.

He is currently president of Public Strategies, a political and management consulting firm based in Wilmington, Delaware.

Kaufman said he is not interested in serving in the Senate long-term, and will not be running for re-election in 2010.

“I do not think that Delaware’s appointed senator should spend the next two years running for office,” Kaufman said. “I will do this job to the best of my ability to serve the people of Delaware.”

Minner’s decision to appoint a caretaker like Kaufman paves the way for Biden’s son, Attorney General Beau Biden, to run for his father’s Senate seat in two years. Beau Biden, a member of Delaware’s National Guard, is currently preparing to be deployed to the Middle East, and took himself out of the running for the appointment.

I’m not exactly sure what has happened, as I left there 5 years ago, but Colin is not as popular as he once was.

Listening to Hannity on the radio today....

He said that Bill Clinton made a remark recently that Chelsea has a promising career in politics.

Term limits isn't the answer

If it's for 12 years it would work.

A single 12 year term in the Senate, four 3-year terms in the House, and two six-year terms for President.

This is dusgusting. Our governement was set up for average people to serve and then go home, not milk it for a career and use their popularity to get their family to take their place.

It can go both ways as sometimes the electorate decides not to make it a family heirs position. Hunter of CA did that this time with his son riding his name recognition into the seat. However a few years back the electorate in LA rejected Billy Tauzin’s son when he tried to assume the seat and the Texas group did the same when Dick Armey’s son attempted to assume his seat.

It's a hella opportunity for conservatives to isolate the Biden pick as a dud, and run a surprise winner.

I know of two charismatic conservatives in Delaware that could beat Coughdrop -- and Farmer Ted, once gets a taste of power, will challenge Beau in the primary -- bank on it!

"Seatwarmer" in the sense that the Kennedy's used Benjamin Smith to fill Jack's Senate seat until Teddy could be elected?

Or "seatwarmer" in the sense that Barney Frank used Steve Gobie until he found out Gobie was running an escort service out of their townhouse?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Of course, the problem with term limits is that you get officeholders who have no accountability to the electorate.

They would be accountable in a very profound way. After two terms as a congressman, he would face the real possibility of rejoining the private sector and having to live by the rules they he has forced us to live by.

What? They're not accountable to us now, they do what they want, when they want, and how they want.

At least with term limits we won't be stuck with them for 30 years or more, like Biden and the rest of those long-in-the-tooth, entrenched politicians.

I am glad that Carney is not appointed to the position--he's been Ruth Ann's toidy for years--even Biden is sharper than him!

Odious RINO Mike Castle is the probably the only one who could beat Lincoln Chaffee er Beau Biden.

Auditor Tom Wagner is the only other Republican in statewide office.

Very smart. Why take a position that you will not be able to work in while in Iraq or Afganistan. Good for him for putting country first. Of course he is still a Democrat...

I know it stuns me that a good man like Duncan Hunter gave his seat to his son. Ok they had an election...most were voting for his father. The whole system is corrupt.
