WASHINGTON: President-elect Barack Obama has been welcomed in the world as an internationalist president, the antithesis of George W Bush, who is often regarded as a swaggering Texas cowboy, according to Prof John Esposito.
Esposito, a leading US authority on Islam, believes that Obamas foreign policy will be expected to be all the things that many in the Muslim world saw as lacking in the Bush administration, which was viewed as neo-colonial, unilateral, arrogant, militant and interventionist.
An Obama administration will be expected to be multilateral, favouring diplomacy over military threats and intervention, and avoiding what many believe was a neo-colonialist American foreign policy whose verbal commitment to democracy promotion and human rights was hypocritical.
Obamas administration cannot, like Bushs, fail to walk the way it talks.
Esposito notes that the Bush administration continued to look the other way in its relations with authoritarian Muslim allies. It refused to accept the election of Hamas, and while it condemned Hizbollah, it sat on the sidelines as Israel carpet-bombed Lebanon, destroying much of its infrastructure in a war whose victims were overwhelmingly civilians.
Expectations:
Many Muslims today expect Obama to live up to the principles of self-determination, justice and human rights that they associate with America and break with the Bush administrations double standard in not promoting democracy and human rights in the Middle East.
Esposito points out that most Muslims, like Westerners, are deeply concerned about religious extremism and terrorism, considering that the majority of attacks and victims have been in the Muslim world. For most Muslims, who admire the Wests freedoms, technologies, and rule of law, the major issues are respect for Islam and Muslims.
Many will be looking for an American administration that emphasises diplomacy and dialogue. They will expect co-existence and constructive engagement rather than interference, intervention or dominance in Americas relations with the Muslim world; the promotion of democratisation as self-determination; economic and educational assistance rather than the transfer of substantial military arms and equipment to authoritative regimes; and a more balanced policy in its approach to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
If you knew what they REALLY think of him, you would not sleep well at nights....
The Dow views him as a sub 8,000 president.
Yup. He sure has impressed the likes of Zawahiri et al.

Yes, I have never seen such consumer and investor FEAR of a radical socialist in my life, but I was just being born when FDR was in office....
LOL. Iraq and Afghanistan have far better prospects for "self-determination, justice, and human rights" than they have ever seen possible in thousands of years of history, going back long before those geographic areas were nation states..... that's thanks to President George W. Bush and the American military forces. I'm so tired of these bozos who pretend that Pres. Bush is against "self-determination, justice, and human rights" --it's usually the political left allied with Islamo-fascists that destroys hopes for such principles.

Someone who just wants to talk will be at a disadvantage when negotiating with someone willing to not just talk, but also to fight if they don’t get their way. It is even worse when the opponent sees nothing wrong with lying in order to achieve victory.
Care to elaborate on that point?
One thing is clear to me, Obama is only going to be the front man. I really wouldn’t want to be in his shoes.
Yeah, that would be 'surrender'. Amazing how the msm can frame the story and a large percentage of sheep will follow the Judas goat to the slaughterhouse.
President Bush tried to diplomacy with both the taliban and iraq before force was legitimately used. In iraq's case it was probably much to US detriment.
And isn't it funny (not the ha, ha kind of funny) that muslims killing muslims doesn't elicit outrage but Infidels killing muslims in defense of weaker muslims is somehow beyond the Pale?
I thought he was viewed by them as a “House Negro”.
“Obama is not viewed as an internationalist president by all muslims.

Al-Qaida No. 2 insults Obama with racial epithet

Associated Press Writers
CAIRO, Egypt (AP) - Al-Qaidas No. 2 leader used a racial epithet to insult Barack Obama in a message posted Wednesday, describing the president-elect in demeaning terms that imply he does the bidding of whites.
The message appeared chiefly aimed at persuading Muslims and Arabs that Obama does not represent a change in U.S. policies. Ayman al-Zawahri said in the message, which appeared on militant Web sites, that Obama is the direct opposite of honorable black Americans like Malcolm X, the 1960s African-American rights leader.
In al-Qaidas first response to Obamas victory, al-Zawahri also called the president-electalong with secretaries of state Colin Powell and Condoleezza Ricehouse negroes.
Even al Qaeda says that Zer0 the 0re0s appointments represent no change.
George $oreA$$ is controlling his house 0re0 very closely with these appointments/selections from Biden to $inator $hrill.
Al Qeada and the Talibunnies will hate him even more than G.W. Bush.
