MOSCOW (AP) India's navy was supposed to lease the brand-new Russian nuclear submarine that suffered an accident over the weekend which killed 20 people, news reports said Monday.
An Indian naval spokesman would not comment Monday on leasing this or any submarine from Russia but his boss has said previously that India was interested...

Well, at least they know the fire control system works..............
Good riddance. The whole sub would have smelled of curry in not time.
Okay, help me out here; why does India need such a sophisticated boat?China, Pakistan. With boats like these India could threaten the sea lanes that carry oil and other commodities to China. We want an armed and capable India in the region. It's the same balance of power game that so often turns and bites us in the a**. But it's cheaper than trying to police the region ourselves.
Seriously, any country has a right to decide what it needs to defend itself. As long as it can pay for it.
I personally would suggest to India that they might want to buy good instead of cheap, but that's their decision.
Not exactly what the Salesky Departmentsky was hoping for.
I see. Wasn’t sure where India was or headed toward in relation to US. For now, we’re good then.

Maybe you’ve heard about their little differences with Pakistan?
I hope they get a discount now.
Ever hear of the Indian Ocean?
India is building up their Navy. They've had several large joint naval exercises with the USN. A sophisticated sub fits.
Dang, your link came up ‘forbidden.’ Must be seriously funny, non PC stuff:-(
There are things that Man was not meant to know. (Either that, or your employer blocks YouTube.)
India’s navy competes with China’s.
Hopefully there will be a LOT of that.
I suppose, given Pak’s nuclear threat, that makes sense but this class of sub seems like owning a Cadilac DeVille in Harlem.
Do you think the Russians will outsource the customer service for that boat to...well, India? (sarc)
Except for Alec Baldwin being in it, THfRO is one of the best!
But the Indians are going to paint it hot pink, cover it with gold foil and hang shiny spangles from the periscope thingy. Of course, it will smell like cow poop, but in India that is also a good thing.
India needs to protect its shipping lanes, and to be able to offer a credible threat to the shipping of any who would threaten it.
Thats the wrong question to ask. The right question is “why does India NOT need such a sophisticated boat?”
That’s why I come to the great minds of Free Republic!
There isnt much choice there. India is just buying whats available. America would never sell nuke subs to India. Russia is the only country that would.

I wonder which one of the first Indian crewmen aboard will be CIA?
This means that the Russians were saved from killing more Indians than either General Custer OR Union Carbide...
Wink!
In case 0bama does attack Pakistan unilaterally and the Pakis decide it's their last chance to go nuclear on India?
China.
We will more likely see a gradual warming of ties between India and Pakistan when the moderate middle class especially in the coastal province of Sindh will get tired of their rabble-rousing Punjabi and Pashtun Islamist countrymen who want to keep them in the stoneage that Pakistan resembles.
America going to war with Pakistan’s Islamic establishment is actually going to be good for Pakistani-Indian relationship. China can be a military ally to Pakistan but there is no other country that is culturally and ethnically more similar to Pakistan than its mother-ship, India.
You are right of course. I was being a little facetious playing on the fact that India is an ally and 0bama has the common sense of hyena in heat.
