(CNSNews.com) - The political hard right is trying to intimidate voting officials in Minnesota who are conducting a recount of the Senate race between Democratic challenger Al Franken and incumbent Republican Norm Coleman, said Sen. Charles Schumer (D-N.Y.), chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, on Thursday.
But the Coleman campaign told CNSNews.com in a statement that the Franken campaign is trying to use the recount, which is mandated by Minnesota law in such close races, to illicitly affect the outcome of the election.
By Thursday afternoon, Coleman maintained an unofficial lead of 206 votes out of 2.88 million cast in the states election for U.S. Senate. The race, one of three Senate contests in the nation still undecided, is important, because if Democrats win all three races they will capture a 60-seat, filibuster-proof majority in the Senate.
The right wing has worked itself into a lather in a clear attempt to intimidate election officials from doing their job, said Schumer at a press conference near the Capitol in Washington. Minnesota law requires a recount, but it seems like the hard right wing of America, the hard right wing of the Republican Party, has a different idea.
Cullen Sheehan, Colemans campaign manager, said in a statement that the campaign is troubled by dramatic and unnatural shifts that are occurring in the counting process.
The Franken campaign is shamelessly trying to strong-arm local officials into counting invalid ballots in order to influence the outcome of the recount, said Sheehan. It is so troubling to us that instead of the normal slight changes in vote totals one would expect during this process, we are now seeing huge chunks of votes appearing and disappearing statistically dubious and improbable shifts that are overwhelmingly accruing to the benefit of Al Franken.
Sheehan is referring to the fact that Colemans lead, which stood at 725 votes on the morning of Nov. 5, has diminished to 206 votes, as apparently uncounted ballots from the states 87 counties have been added to the tally.
Schumer, however, said any suggestion that fishy ballots are being counted is false.
The claims that something is fishy here are just belied by history, Schumer told CNSNews.com. There is nothing improbable or even unprecedented about a shift in a few hundred votes in the canvas process. The shifts that occurred this year are actually smaller than what has happened in previous years.
If the state of Minnesota is unable to produce a definitive winner after the recount, the Senate could ultimately decide which candidate won the race or that neither had won.
Schumer, however, told CNSNews.com that he is unwilling to discuss that possibility until the recount is over.
Schumer added that while he thinks it is still unlikely that Democrats will win 60 seats in the Senate, he thinks that the 57 they have already gained is enough to move the country forward.
The official statewide recount of ballots is set to begin some time next week.
Intimidating? Like the Black Panthers in Philly?
Schumer is a revolting creature!
Do they really think people believe them?
The GOP must demand that American elections take place on Election Day, just like it's authorized in the US Constitution.
The contemptible Chuckles the Clown again accuses the GOP of doing what the ‘Rats are trying to do.
The Dems don't care if people believe them.
They just care whether or not their fake votes get counted.
If the GOP leaders don't go up to Minnesota and literally camp out in front of the Democrat election board's office, and DEMAND all those newly found votes get tossed.... then we might as well toss every rule or principal from the US Constitution on down.
What I guess I really meant was do they think people believe them as there are some non political junkies that just hear a sound byte on TV and actually believe everything. They still believe the republicans were responsible fully for the housing crisis. It is beyond words sickening.
The Republicrats are mere pansies, while the Democrats are the big, bad buttboys!
I’d love to see this effeminate-looking Senator gone. Him and Clinton, too.
Man, I hate living in NYC.
What Chuckie is really saying is that the GOP is topping the Dhimmis from stealing the election.
EXACTLY!!!! This is the root of the cancer few people recognize!30 states voted for 20 something to 30 days. Imagine all of the college towns having kids vote numerous times a day via ACORN and MOVEON.ORG. In my swing state local classified ads for ACTIVISM for OBAMA jobs were in the paper a week before EARLY VOTING. Obama should have won by a blowout. They barely squeaked by even with fraud.
“Do they really think people believe them?”
Yes. The election results prove that.
This rat tactic of accusing us of wrongdoings to cover their own backsides is the old Sal Alinsky teaching of putting your opponent on defense.
Watch Allen Colmes(yea, I know) use this tactic every night. He deflects every negative that is said about Obama by using this method.
Yes, it’s getting old and these methods have to be exposed and countered every time they’re used.
Which of these three women do you think will make the best Senator?
The witnessing and reporting of vote fraud is certainly intimidating and must be stopped immediately is the official position of the DNC.
Control the language and you control the world. “Hard right”?! Notice there are never any leftists in the country. Don’t even call them liberals. Ans conservatives share in the blame. Rush and Hannity say “liberal” as thought it’s the worst they can think of. How about leftist. Forget “liberal”. It has a noble ring to it. The root of “liberal” is liberty.
