Bill Marriott: Don't tie me to LDS Prop. 8 efforts
The Salt Lake Tribune ^ | 11/13/2008 | Peggy Fletcher Stack

Posted on 11/13/2008 10:05:00 PM PST by TheDon

While acknowledging that he is a Mormon, Bill Marriott said this week that neither he nor his company, Marriott International, contributed to the campaign to pass Proposition 8, a California ballot measure that would define marriage as solely between a man and a woman.

Gay-rights activists urged their supporters to boycott Marriott hotels around the world because of Marriott's membership in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, which raised about $22 million for the initiative that passed Nov. 4.

For the past 20 years, Marriott International has had domestic-partner benefits and has earned a perfect score on the Human Rights Campaign's Corporate Equality Index for two years in a row, Marriott said in a release. Many of the hotels have hosted gay-community functions and events for years.

"The Bible that I love teaches me about honesty, integrity and unconditional love for all people," Marriott said. "But beyond that, I am very careful about separating my personal faith and beliefs from how we run our business."

What does it profit a man, if he gaineth the whole sodomite travel sector, but loses his soul?

IOW, he talks the talk, but doesn't walk the walk.

What I like the least about this is that his company was foisted into the middle of this thing...and ONLY because he’s Mormon.

We saw the other deal where a Sacramento theater director felt it necessary to resign under pressure because people “discovered” he donated to Yes on Prop 8.

Bill Marriott’s only “sin” by these witchhunters is that he’s Mormon.

Just by being Mormon he’s been put between a rock and a hard place in a situation he had nothing to do with, and I don’t think that is something to applaud.

I admire the LDS for taking the position it did. It’s a religion that has strong principles on issues of marriage and family.

Mr. Marriott, however, is running a business ... it’s not an arm of the LDS church. Offhand, I can’t think of a single ‘Christian’ hotel chain. Nor can I think of any other that would refuse to cater to gays or any other group that seeks its services and will pay its rates.

I’d suggest that the LDS has done rather nicely with Marriott family tithing and other support over the years. That is appropriate. But that doesn’t mean that the Marriotts or any other businessmen have to sacrifice or have their businesses sacrificed one way or the other over political differences.

Catering to a gay clientele is part of operating in the hospitality industry. It’s not the focus of Marriott’s marketing. Any hotelier or restaurateur who refused to cater to that or any other group would be shut down for discrimimination. (not that I want to be a guest there while the gay events are going on).

The gay activists have gone beyond the pale in their reaction to the passage of Prop 8, and it is they, not Mr. Marriott, who should be the object of scorn for their behavior.

You know, before the turn of the century, in some localities it wasn’t a crime to kill a Mormon.

I’d be willing to bet that many of these “gay activists” wouldn’t mind bringing back the practice.

I saw a clip of that “protester” slapping a cross out of the hand of that elderly lady. Had I been there, that “protester” would have been searching for his teeth. But then what else would we expect from people who believe in living together in peace and harmony, as long as we bend over and accept their rules silently.

Mark

Although liberals like to claim otherwise, not all discrimination is bad. It is a point that even a lib will admit when pressed. Tolerance of evil begets intolerance of good.

Romney was the only Republican front-runner unequivocally backing a constitutional gay marriage ban.

In 2003, when the Massachusetts Supreme Court ruled that same sex couples could be married in the state, Romney urged the legislature to adopt a constitutional amendment banning the practice. With not enough Pubs in the state, it failed. He has since supported a similar amendment to the U.S. Constitution.

He has a home in California, so I'm sure he's said something on this issue specifically, but I can't find it. I can't imagine it would be any different. He intrinsically believes in the sanctity of marriage, and that it should be held sacred as between a man and a woman. If you find something different, let me know.

Agreed. Perhaps you can explain why he is still a member in good standing while Chad Hardy has been excommunicated and his BYU degree has been rescinded. The calendar sold by Hardy is in no way comparable to the hard-core porn that I understand is broadcast in the Marriott hotels.

It's baffling to me how the rich and powerful (Marriott and Reid) are untouched by the rules and regulations other mormons are expected to obey.

I suspect that the excommunication had to do with
Chad Hardy’s personal conduct, not the selling of the calendar. Excommunication usually follows only serious immoral acts, or serious, public apostasy.

Actually, the Marriott chain is on a national boycott list by Life Decisions Intl because they've apparently given $ to Planned Parenthood. So not all Mormons are "leading the way" in the recent fight for traditional values.

I would venture to say that there were many copies of that calendar sold to women...good-looking guys with bare chests?

Who labeled it "homoerotic"? Some woman who doesn't appreciate male beauty?

That is quite a reach to condemn Hardy.
