For a Washington Job, Be Prepared to Tell All
The New York Times ^ | November 12, 2008 | Jackie Calmes

A seven-page questionnaire being sent by the office of President-elect Barack Obama to those seeking cabinet and other high-ranking posts may be the most extensive - some say invasive - application ever.

(Excerpt) Read more at nytimes.com ...

TOPICS: News/Current Events
KEYWORDS: 2008; banglist; bho2008; democrats; guncontrol; liberallies; obama2008; obamasecrets
Link to the 7 page questionnaire

The questionnaire covers the usual grounds of embarrassing background. Unremarked in the NYT story is this gem, Question 59 on page 7:

Do you or any members of your immediate family own a gun? If so, provide complete ownership and registration information. Has the registration ever lapsed? Please also describe how and by whom it is used and whether it has been the cause of any personal injuries or property damage.

Let me also say that I remain distressed that the White House during this confirmation process, which overall went smoothly, failed to provide critical documents as part of the record that could have provided us with a better basis to make our judgment with respect to the nomination. This White House continues to stymie efforts on the part of the Senate to do its job. I hope with the next nominee who comes up for the Supreme Court that the White House recognizes that in fact it is its duty not just to the Senate but to the American people to make sure we can thoroughly and adequately evaluate the record of every single nominee who comes before us.

“They must include any e-mail that might embarrass the president-elect, along with any blog posts and links to their Facebook pages.

The application also asks applicants to “please list all aliases or ‘handles’ you have used to communicate on the Internet.”

LOL...I guess all those KOS kids, DUmmies and Huffington Post folks can forget their dreams of working for Obama!!

-- Wonder how they are weeding out folks that have ever voted for a republican? --

My take was completely different. The questions are aimed largely at detecting administration members that would be damaging as examples of hypocrites. The usual questions are "paid our taxes?, taken any gifts?, hired illegal immigrants?, belonged to the wrong groups?" In that context, the question "Own any guns?" stands out, to me. Why would gun ownership be taken as embarrassing or hypocritical?

I see the question as telegraphing a general policy position toward firearm ownership.

This from an incoming regime where the new leader could not achieve the highest levels of security clearance if not elected to the position.

All Americans will be required to take a similar quiz in the future. That way they know who must be placed under control.

“In Obama’s America, First they came for the Republicans, and I didn’t speak up because I didn’t consider myself a Republican.

Then they came for the Gun Owners and I didn’t speak up because I didn’t own a gun

Then they came for the Conservatives and I dind’t speak up because I wasn’t a Conservative.

And then . . . they came for me . . . And by that time there was no one left to speak up.”

I think we all realize now that Obama is going for our guns as soon as he takes office. The man is being proved to be a liar everyday. It’s just a shame that so many people in this country didn’t know it or didn’t care.

Also, did anyone notice the note made next to question 31? It looks like ‘Clinton’ to me. What do you all make of that?

no joke....lol

this paragraph tells it all:

“Not surprisingly, then, Question 18 of the Obama application asks whether “you, your spouse or any member of your immediate family” have been affiliated with Fannie, Freddie, American International Group, Washington Mutual and any other institution getting a government bailout.”

Every one of those companies gave millions to Obama’s campaign!! PONZI PENNY is slated to be in his commerce department along with many others involved in the meltdown.

I think it says "Children," and is meant to excuse a person from disclosing loans made to their children.

Without looking it up, my intuition is that this isn't any more intrusive that whatever GWB used on the subjects of taxes, income and memberships. Congress puts written questions to nominees as a matter of routine, so asking potential nominees to pony-up in advance isn't a bad idea.

Obviously, the gun question caught my eye. I believe it's appearance in this context is a first. I don't recall seeing a "do you own a gun" question in any questionnaire of any nominee, EVER.

Just a few of the questions:

Q1: Are you now or have you ever been a capitalist?

Q2: Do you have any moral issues with killing babies?

Q3: Are you willing to take a personal allegiance oath to Obama?

Q4: Do you believe that firearm ownership is a “right”?

Q5: Do you believe that there are any arguments against affirmative action or wealth redistribution that should not be prosecuted as a hate crime?

I don’t believe he could achieve ANY level of security clearance for any job he already didn’t have: what level of security clearance for example, was it necessary to achieve to become a State Senator and a US Senator????
It would seem there was something necessary for these jobs also, and that if THEY were looked into back then, they would be available, or should I say WOULD HAVE BEEN AVAILABLE for our consideration as voters in the current Presidential election. It seems to have been the closed world of Thug Dem Machine politics that made his career in Illinois, and it’s just a hop skip and jump into National Office from there.Obama has ascended from one position to another in Illinois, unchecked and unvetted, so it was absolutely necessary to conceal the fact that he was largely UNKNOwn on the level of documents and records there, as he is now that he’s become President. A carefully crafted mythology takes the place of actual documention, student records, legal writing, medical records, etc. There are some kinds of jobs awaiting his benefactors in Illinois, whether they stay there or come to Washington. The entire political culture of Chicago has been transferred to the WH.Remember when we were discovering the same kind of thing about Clinton , the deeper we looked into him, all during his first term (which predates FR, but you get the meaning)

I had a liberal democrat boss I worked for at one time asked pretty invasive questions about my personal finances. He found out I paid my house off and start to ask pretty nosy questions about that as well. I told him - NOYB ! That didn’t sit too well with him.

-- Very invasive --

The general invasive nature isn't new. See Fabulous Formless Darkness: Presidential Nominees and the Morass of Inquiry, from Terry Sullivan of The Brookings Institution, in Spring 2001.

Anyone nominated for a position requiring Senate confirmation must file four separate forms. The first, the Personal Data Statement (PDS), originates in the White House and covers some 43 questions laid out in paragraphs of text. Applicants permitted by the White House to go on to the vetting stage fill out three other forms. The first, the Standard Form (SF) 86, develops information for a national security clearance investigation, commonly called the "FBI background check." The SF-86 has two parts: the standard questionnaire and a "supplemental questionnaire" that repackages some questions from the SF-86 into broader language often similar though not identical to questions asked on the White House PDS.

The second additional questionnaire, SF-278, comes from the U.S. Office of Government Ethics (OGE) and gathers information for financial disclosure.

I'm open to being incorrect on the gun question being a novelty originating with the Obama administration; but intrusiveness in general is not new.

I can’t think of a legitimate reason for Obama to ask for gun information that wouldn’t already be covered by the criminal record questions. In short, if you’ve broken no laws, it should be none of his business.

A chill wind blows for gun owners.

This proves that they're going after our guns.

They need to have everyone who is in Obama's administration to be as clean as a police whistle when they finally go after the guns. They simply cannot risk the embarrassment of having someone on staff ever having a CCW permit when Obama tries to push legislation banning concealed carry at the national level. They can't risk anyone in the administration ever having registered an 'assault weapon' in New York or California to arm their rich person's 'panic room' arsenal when Obama goes after semi-automatic firearms.

That's what this is all about. Guaranteed.

Same subject popped up at Volokh Conspiracy.

Interesting Question on Incoming Administratin's Questionnaire

Still, it struck me as interesting that gun ownership and gun registration was one of the things that they'd specifically ask about. It also struck me as interesting, though perhaps necessary given the reasonable worry about political blowback should the facts come out, that people would be told to report (1) gun ownership not just by themselves but also by immediate family members ...
