It's standard fare for a president to make a bipartisan gesture by including one member of the opposing party in his cabinet - just as it's always the case (lest we forget) that every president-elect vows to change the tone in Washington and reach out magnanimously to his vanquished opponents.
But John Podesta, the former Bill Clinton former chief of staff who's spearheading the transition for the 44th president, said today that there would be independents and Republicans in Barack Obama's cabinet and "not just at a token level".

5. John McCain. Don't laugh. Well, OK you can. I don't think McCain will be in Obama's cabinet, not least because he has the rest of his Senate term to serve out. I do think, however, that it's very possible that McCain could well become an Obama buddy - he'll be thinking of his legacy and his gracious (the word everyone used, but it's the right one) concession speech was from the heart. I'm certainly not holding my breath but a role for McCain in Obama's cabinet would be a stroke of genius and real creativity by the new president.

Sigh.

What do you mean? McCain a Republican? When did that happen?
Actually, that would be perfect. Get a conservative to run for his Senate seat.
I simply cannot puke anymore - there’s nothing left.
Putting a Republican or Independent in the Cabinet is obviously not the same as putting a Conservative in the Cabinet, but still I agree with you, it could be a moderating influence.
I wouldn’t be surprised. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he gave us the finger and smiled while he was shaking Obama’s hand with glee.
It would only be genius because Senator 59 would be appointed to replace McCain.
There's one problem with that: McCain is neither Republican nor Independent; McCain is a Democrat.
He’s a RHINO.
After all that bending over, he should get something out of it ... but you know liberals ... they would find him to DULL and too “right wing”.
Sorry John, all that “reaching across the aisle” was a total waste of time. You are irrelevant.
As long as McCain refunded every single penny he raised during the election AND as long as he renounced his membership in the GOP AND as long as he profusely apologized for wasing the time and effort of the millions who worked for his canidacy and who went to the polls to support the McCain/Palin ticket AND as long as he issued a public apology to Sarah Palin for putting her and her family through pure screaming hell, I personally don’t see a problem with him accepting a cabinet position in the new Marxist regime...
LOL!
Ok, folks, your credibility is really suffering here.
The correct term is "RINO". It's an acronym which stands for Republican In Name Only.
There is no "H" in "RINO".
Mmmmmmmm kaaaaaaay?
I was flabbergasted when McCain went so soft on Obama 20 minutes into the first debate when Big O left himself wide open on the economy (O blamed 8 years of failed Bush policies when the Dems socially engineered Fannie Mae / Freddie Mac and presided over its failure and set this crash in motion; McCain could have crucified them all right then and there. It later seemed he was going soft to hedge his bets to maintain his favor with the Dems after losing the election, if not throwing it altogether. Then he left Palin twisting in the wind. Nothing would surprise me.
Good way to get the Maverick RINO out of the Senate, actually.
Because the Dems will need someone to blame with their policies EXPLODE in their faces and kill millions of people.
I agree, we should encourage this!
I told people I know that if they wanted to vote for the Democrat, they should have voted for McCain. LOL
There is no way Obama would put McCain in a position of power in his administration. McCain marches to his own goofy drummer - one that can’t keep time, at that.
Colin Powell would be great as education secretary, which is what he should have been under W.
i think it’s because mccain simply didn’t have a clue. He didn’t take the time to understand his own health plan or that mortgage idea he took from hillary. Someone else tells him what to use.
Hey lookee here all, this bill was passed by a "Bi-Partisan" Senate.
McLame makes me want to Barf.
Yeah, right. Give ANOTHER Democretin a chance to get Mc’s AZ Senate seat. What’s the law in AZ, can Gov. Napoleonitano appoint anyone she chooses?
Nah... probably Hagel or Powell.
George Bush is a globalist, Obama is a globalist, McCain is a Globalist, and so is Bill Clinton. So do not be surprised that they do have the same goals.
Why not? He was the Republican in Obama’s campaign.
Please take him, BO. He’s most comfortable with the donkeys (asses).
You’ve been watching too much West Wing
Actually Napolitano would have to appoint a Republican by law.
Although I’m sure she’d appoint the weakest one she could find so she could beat him/her in ‘10.
-—we voted for Sarah Palin. He just happened to be on the ballot with her. -—
pretty much true in my house...
This might explain why McCain hasn’t risen to Palin’s defense since the election.
I think Obama was asked if he would put John McCain in his cabinet, and I think Obama said NO. However I think McCain said he would put Obama in.
I did not know Arizona law provided for that. Thank you.
I’ve actually heard McCain and Obama get along well even though they disagree on issues.
The McCain he should be appointing is Cindy to an ambassadorship. She is actually qualified for the job.
“What do you mean? McCain a Republican? When did that happen?”
Obama isn’t interested in having America lovers, Democrats or Republicans in his cabinet.
Were you among those who spat on our troops on election day?
If McCain keeps reaching across that aisle he’s going to draw back a nub.
Calling McCain out now for the open-border useless loser that he is - is not “spitting on our troops”. With his silly vanity candidacy over, he’s free to return to his favorite political practice: betrayal. We’re free to identify him for what he is.
Arizona is strongly trending Democratic. With AZ Gov. Napolitano’s high popularity in Arizona she is already favored to win the seat away from McCain if she were to run (her two terms are up in 2010,) but she would be a major favorite if she were to run against any other Republican.
On the other hand, from what I have read, Napolitano is being talked about as a potential cabinet member in the new administration, so the picture in AZ could change (in both ways) depending on who the cabinet appointees are.
You have said it all.
If McCain joined Hussein’s cabinet, I’d expect millions of people to contact RNC and demand refunds of their donations.
I honestly think that McCain can’t stand Obama and that the feeling is mutual. So no way, no how will Obama offer or McCain accept.
I almost did that today when I got a letter from him thanking me for my support and asking me to join with him in working with OBAMA to get things done!! I feel like I am living in a nightmare right now!
Oh really? Here is a snipet of the letter I just got from McCain:
“We urge you to join us in not just congratulating Senator Obama, but offering our next president our good will and earnest effort to find ways to come together as a nation. Whatever our differences may be, we are all fellow Americans.”
I got news for Mr. McCain...OBAMA WILL GET NONE OF MY ‘EARNEST EFFORT’ ON ANYTHING THAT HAS TO DO WITH HIS MARXIST PLANS FOR AMERICA!
I watched all the debates. You could tell by the body language and actions of both men just exactly what they thought of each other.
It does sound unlikely but that won’t stop McCain from trying to work with Obama from the Senate....(eye roll)...He loves to do that kind of crap.
