VIENNA, Austria -- She was a stranger, and she kissed me. Just for being an American.
It happened on the bus on my way to work Wednesday morning, a few hours after compatriots clamoring for change swept Barack Obama to his historic victory. I was on the phone, and the 20-something Austrian woman seated in front of me overheard me speaking English.
Without a word, she turned, pecked me on the cheek and stepped off at the next stop.
Nothing was said, but the message was clear: Today, we are all Americans.
For longtime U.S. expatriates like me - someone far more accustomed to being targeted over unpopular policies, for having my very Americanness publicly assailed - it feels like an extraordinary turnabout.
Like a long journey over a very bumpy road has abruptly come to an end.
And it's not just me.
An American colleague in Egypt says several people came up to her on the streets of Cairo and said: "America, hooray!" Others, including strangers, expressed congratulations with a smile and a hand over their hearts.
Another colleague, in Amman, says Jordanians stopped her on the street and that several women described how they wept with joy.

Bleh!! You forgot the mega-barf alert!!!
The kum-bay-yah moment will end when:
1) The missle defense system is un-installed by a weak Obama to appease Russia
2) A dirty bomb hits a US city because of lack of border enforcement, or
3) Sha’ria law is passed in civil courts, like the UK
Cool is VERY important.
Let me know when it's cool to be a Texan again.
They have no idea yet what an Obama administration will bring to “the world.”
vomit inducing
It never stopped being cool.....among the right people.
The Austrians have a thing for charasmatic socialists who don’t like Jews.
What’ nu?

I wonder if they have any idea the George Bush WASN’T ON THE BALLOT?!
I support the USA but not the president-elect.
I wonder if you will hear anyone say that..
Must have been a hooker.
Personally, I think it has ALWAYS been cool to be an American. We are still the most blessed people on the planet. (for a while...)
American should ask Europeans..who is the black president or prime minister in Europe ? Here in Europe ,socialist “cretins” are celebrating the BLACK ONE, but, here in the European union, we have 27 countries.not one black leader to be seen....RACISTS.
Good one.
oh and the Russians put new missiles in place today.
Why is it that the Germans or the French or the Brits or even Canadians are so hip on the US electing a “minority” yet their government has never done such?
Didn’t know it ever wasn’t cool.
We’ll see how long this fantasy honeymoon with this Marxist poseur lasts.
Well, Bill Kole, will you like it just as much when queers start giving you little kisses, too?
I ALWAYS!!!!! HAVE BEEN COOL AS AN AMERICAN ANY WHERE I GO!!!!!
So what do we think... will this new love of America last 24 hours, or will we all be surprised and it lasts 48...? /sarcasm off
“Good one.”
Yeah, I was pretty proud of that post.
This love-America-fest is going to last until Obama says one word that some muslim terrorist or French waiter doesn’t like. After that, it’s back on the attack...
I was thinking the same thing. If they want a black presdent or PM so bad why don’t they elect one, or a Morrocan, a Turk, Pakistani or Hindu?
I’d rather be feared than loved.
We had a president who wasn’t a good speaker, and now we have a terrible president who can make crowds swoon.
To the rest of the world, I’m sorry. We’re better than this. Just hold on, and you probably want to up your defense budgets a bit. Times are going to get rocky.
This putz thinks its over!
One of the more remarkable things concerning this latest election cycle is the foot stomping, purple-face-fit utter childishness displayed by the left.
Ditto that.
If Obama really believes this, he's more of a fool than I thought.
A large percentage of the world's population wants America to fail. The more predatory countries out there, like Russia and Iran, are licking their chops at having this naive child in the White House. So, yes, many people are happy abroad- happy because electing Hussein has weakened us.
The people who are our friends in the world? They're not celebrating. Today, countries like Israel or Iraq are trying to figure out what their future holds now that they can no longer count on the US. We'll see Israel hitting the Iranian nuclear facilities in the next couple of months. They have no choice, because they know Hussein won't do anything to stop Iran from getting nukes.
Just dropped in to say “puke.”
I wouldn't hold my breath waiting for Obama to say such a word...
It’s cool to be an American abroad and defend your country to the Socialist Euro-weenies in street side cafes. People I met in this way almost always left with a more favorable view of Americans. How cool will Americans be when we are as weak and dependent as they are?
Interesting point of view, my Foreign Travels have been somewhat limited to countries we’ve been busy keeping free from Islamist Tyranny, but the people there seemed to think we were pretty cool to have around. This being prior to the election of the anointed one.
She was trying to score some blow, she figured all Americans were crack dealers now since they elected one.
LOL, Im not even an American anymore - - there’s no such thing. I just live here.
America - - as a concept - - was a grand experiment. I bet the founders would be astonished it lasted as long as it did. However, the place is now just a land mass populated by cretins and parasites who enthusiastically vote for politicians who promise them free stuff - - confiscated by force from their neighbors - - in exchange for their votes.
At this point my main worry is for those poor souls in the military who might soon find themselves on UN peacekeeping missions in Rwanda and Darfur, armed only with rubber bullets. I hope those soldiers and Marines can find a way to get themselves discharged, and quick.
Sure.
And if the New York Yankees hired Don Knotts as their new manager, then everyone would like the Yankees.
Yeah, the Euros loved us after 9-11, too. They’re always there for us after an American tragedy. Then, when the work starts...gonzo.
“Cool is VERY important.”
Cool trumps love of country. Cool trumps competence.
I've retired my flag for the duration.
There are some things that I just can't do. No matter what.
Its all better now, all that matters is how we feel about things. If we feel good about ourselves and strangers like us then everything must be OK, so it’s all better now.
I never stopped being cool.
That’s the level of conviction with which the anti-Bush campaign in the U.S. and world media has managed to achieve in its target audience. The difficulty is that it has raised expectations to a wildly unreasonable level. If anyone thinks the Iranians are going to stop their nuclear weapons program because the Great One is now President he needs his head examined. If anyone thinks the Russians will cease deployment of missiles in Europe or aggression against the Ukraine, well, it’s already too late for that. If anyone thinks the world just became safe they’d better consider just for whom it became safer. It isn’t a comforting thought.
Well there you go, he done solved all our problems in one day. We can now dance in the streets, even if there’s a few nuclear craters in the mid-east.
