Michael Dell asks workers to consider taking up to five days off without pay. (I told you so)

Posted on 11/04/2008 10:39:28 PM PST by Stayfree

In a memo Monday, Dell asked employees throughout the company to consider taking off as many as five days without pay over the next three months. In addition, he said, the company would institute a hiring freeze, scale back some projects, offer voluntary severance packages and cut many of its contract workers.

Chances are, I will be asking a few employees to take more than 5 days off without pay.

Thanks, Obama!

one of their experts said a republican victory would have been better, and that this outcome will limit the US's ability to compete. oops!

My brotherinlaw works for Nextel. He said he would agree to take unpaid time off to keep his job. It makes sense to me. To bad the union workers don't take this option. Days off with no pay or no job at all.

And so the Obamaconomy begins.

A lot of those who voted for the Messiah are big company employees who are far removed from the realities of small company, entrepreneurial life.

The Democrats are now the party of big business and big government. The GOP is the party of the entrepreneur, the people who don’t live in large cities and who want to be free and don’t want government colluding with business in an anti-competitive fashion. The GOP is now truly the part of Jefferson and Jackson.

There was a guy on here earlier from NY who said he had several Obama-swooning 20 year olds that were on his payroll. He said now that Obama & the Dems were going to raise his taxes, he was going to fire them all tomorrow and tell them that Obama’s win and his policies meant that he couldn’t afford to keep them on as employees. Voting blindly has consequences.

Michael Dell should close down the company and give the money back to the shareholders. After all, that’s what he said he’d do to Apple if he was in charge of it, and that was when Apple was a lot healthier than Dell is now.

Dell's been tanking for quite a while. The quality fell dramatically and their sales have dropped. Offshoring phone support to India hurt them badly. Dell begged Apple to let them license OSX, but Jobs has a long memory, and was cranked because Michael Dell had stated if he owned Apple he would shut it down. Jobs sent out a press announcement when Apple passed Dell in total value.

I doubt Jobs would license OSX to anyone outside Apple, anyway, but most of the manufacturers are hostage to MS.

My brother just bought a new computer, and he was a big Dell fan, but went with Acer because he could get a bare bones system for about half the price.

This has nada to do with the election.

The GOP is now truly the part of Jefferson and Jackson.

I have been saying the same thing for some time. When the Iowa 'rats hold their Jefferson-Jackson Day dinner, I tell any (captive) audience about the irony of it all, and how Jackson would personally kick the living crap out of 99% of the 'rat officeholders* for being enemies of individual freedom.

Mr. niteowl77

*Yes, I know that as a man who believed in full measures, Jackson would probably actually shoot or stick them, but a phrase is a phrase. Jefferson would likely denounce them but shrink from physical confrontation... and then blame everything on Alexander Hamilton anyway.

Dell is being forced to upgrade their quality (due to customer complaints) and they’re discovering what Apple’s been saying all along - you really *can’t* build and sell a good computer for under $500.

To get even the cheapest Dells to an acceptable configuration gets them over the $500 mark easily.

I have heard about some businesses in different industries whose new orders have literally gone to ZERO in the last couple of weeks. Old, established businesses. It isn’t Obama’s fault (yet), but hopefully he will be blamed for it eventually.

“The GOP is now truly the part of Jefferson and Jackson.”

If that’s so, then they had better learn to open their mouths and make their case loudly, clearly, and convincingly. McCain was never able to make a strong case for capitalism because he never really believed in it himself. A warning sign I heard back in the primaries was when he criticized Romney for pursuing profit while he, McCain, pursued “honor.” When I heard that, I knew we would be in trouble if he became the nominee.

However, I’m not so sure the GOP really is the party of the small, innovative entrepreneur. A GOP president and a GOP congress (up till 2006) did nothing but spend — true, they managed to cut taxes and that increased the federal coffers. But government spending in and of itself is injurious to an economy.

it was up by a much larger amount earlier in the day. they heard about our election results in their mid-day trading, and after that their index took a nosedive.

but by then it was so high that even a nosedive couldn't make it close lower for the day.
