US President George W. Bush late Tuesday telephoned his apparent successor, Democrat Barack Obama, to congratulate him on his "awesome night," according to White House spokeswoman Dana Perino. "Mr President-elect, congratulations to you. What an awesome night for you, your family and your supporters. Laura and I called to congratulate you and your good bride," she quoted Bush as telling Obama.
"I promise to make this a smooth transition. You are about to go on one of the great journeys of life. Congratulations and go enjoy yourself," Bush told Obama, she said.
The president also invited Obama and his family "to visit the White House soon, at their convenience," Perino said.
Bush was also to reach out to Obama's defeated rival, Republican John McCain, who conceded the fight shortly after 11:00 pm (0400 GMT).
Nice try. Bye bye.
1933: Whoever would have thought an Austrian would become German Chancellor.
It began with his father who never bought into the principles of the man that took him to the White House.
I think our current President is an honorable man with a strong faith in God. However, his inability to communicate or defend any principles outside the war on terror destroyed his party. He governed with a bunker mentality and seemed uninterested in the future of his party. He allowed the media to define his presidency instead of defining it on his own.
He recognized the problems with the mortgage crisis, social security, and medicaid/medicare and talked about them to congress in state of the union addresses. That’s it. He abandoned any efforts to do the right thing and stayed in the bunker. He never appeared to lead or want to lead the GOP.
He deserves our thanks for two supreme court justices and no attacks since 9/11. He loses major history points for tonight.
That is the way I see it.
Your a jerk.
Not to mention he had 8 years to use the bully pulpit to articulate conservative principles and values, yet couldn’t talk his way out of a wet paper bag.
Maybe that’s what he’s up to. He’s sucking up hoping o won’t have him arrested for war crimes.
Maybe that’s what he’s up to. He’s sucking up hoping o won’t have him arrested for war crimes.
Bush legacy for the GOP and conservatives...
“the huge spending and the deficits”
You do know who controls the purse strings, don’t you?
I’d like to see Barney and Ms Beazley fed copious amounts of beans January 19th and locked in the Oval office for 24 hours before Bush leaves office.. and all the Os and Bs on the WH keyboards superglued to the ceiling.
Maybe ... and maybe not. The Left is screaming for his blood (in some cases literally), and Obama has already promised Justice department investigations into everything he's done. Don't be suprised if he's arrested at some point.
After seeing the propaganda push for the Zero. I would say one world gov’t is closer then we think. Or are we in it now? Open boarders is not rational. Something is pushing our agenda because it ain’t Americans
And you’re quite a wordsmith.
“I see the GOP in the same state as it was in 1976...we have good leadership in Governors Palin, Jindal, Pawlenty...let Palin and Jindal become the standard bearers and conservatives will rise again.”
that’s what I see as well. Maybe we’ll have another 12 yrs of conservative presidents after President Obama’s excellent adventure.
if anything, obama should be calling bush to thank him for this ‘awesome’ night. if it werent for bush’s complete incompetence that ruined the republican and conservative brand, liberals would not control both chambers of congress with huge majorities along with the most liberal president in this nations history. thanks president bush! it may take us decades to recover from this. im sorry but im pissed right now. cant say i didnt see this coming. too many people gave bush and the rest of his republican cronies a pass the past 4 years when they lerched too far to the left economically. im sorry but bush let us all down. now we are all going to pay.
Yep, the disaster of 2009 will be a rude awakening to 51% of the country. Imagine the shock when their messiah can’t pull it off.
Making them look good will be fun to watch.
They take the political capital everyone works so hard to get and fritter it away. GHWB frittered away everything Reagan built up, and then GGWB frittered away both the 1994 Republican Revolution advantage, AND the strong advantage given him by the more recent Republican majority.
Very disappointed in Bush but have to ask: If he’s arrested who will be willing to march on D.C. and stand up for him? Sadly, probably not many.
“I dont recall George helping the GOP one time in 8 years. I hope a Bush is never on the ticket again”
9-11. Your memory is worse than most Democrats I know
I’m sick of Bush, McCain and Republicans trying to be “nice” and show “class” to a bunch of cut throat leftists, Marxists and traitors who never show them an ounce of respect back. It’s not tit for tat with the Dhims, they just keep plowing along on their path of destroying freedom, true freedom and America.
Hussein Obama and the Dhims are going to destroy this country and probably the rest of the world and Western civilization in conjunction with the Chinese, the Islamofascists and Muslims, scumbags like Hugo Chavez, Ahmadinejad and all the rest of the petty tyrants and fascist dictators in the world.
Obama will not fight back to save this country. He’s an agent of destruction.
Fox News is sucking up incredibly hard - every one of them - as they know they are first to go under 0.
You will NOT leave the United States. You will stay here and watch things unravel over the next year or two, and we’ll put things back together in ‘10 and ‘12.
Obama is an empty suit, and Pelosi, Reid & Co. are idiots. There’s no way the lovefest will last long. They’ll be tearing each other apart within a year.
I read your posts all the time. You’re one of the more reasonable voices on FR.
This nation has faced crises before, and patriots don’t cut and run. Get some sleep.
I told my wife earlier “If Gore or Kerry had won none of this would have happened.”
you are 100% correct.
Well, I hope Obama comes to my house first. I have a leaky facet and he said he would fix everything....so I’m waiting for the new US Dept. of Facet Fixing to commence.
Don't worry, the Bush era is over, done, finito.
Bush has been an absolute disaster for the conservative movement. McCain would probably have been even worse.
If there is a silver lining to all of this, the conservative, constitutionalist and Christian grassroots will have ample motivation to start preparing for the coming political battles. What will be done to stop illegal immigration? Are we prepared to vigorously oppose unconstitutional legislation aka socialism?
Take your "compassionate" "conservatism" and shove it up your ass.
I’m sure 0bama said, “Thank you Mr. President. I owe it all to you.”
I have a feeling a lot of these posters are going to be cheering also! They could hardly wait until he was put out so that they could blame him for all that ails them. I guess we’ll have to put up with a number of them on here ragging on him for all he’s done wrong!
You got that right. If you believe in turning the other cheek..DON’T RUN FOR PRESIDENT.
Im sure 0bama said, Thank you Mr. President. I owe it all to you.
heh heh heh
*1933: Whoever would have thought an Austrian would become German Chancellor. *
The Revolutionaries of 1848, that’s who.
What do I win?
“I WILL NOT live in a socialist/communist country in any form or fashion.”
But...where can you go? Australia’s the only possibility and they aren’t holding too steady lately. The UK’s out, the EU’s out, Canada’s out, so do you want to live in a third world country, an Arab country or Israel?
With Obama as president, unless he is surrounded by some very savvy advisors who rein him in, the USA could shortly be on about par with Bangladesh in world status, but for the time being I still don’t see any option for a true lover of freedom than to stay in the USA and fight. Half of America is still sane.
President Bush is a big government country-club Republican who hates everything Reagan embodied and, like his daddy, wanted to undo the Reagan revolution.
He is an Ivy League elitist like The One, who couldn’t stomach what Reagan did to the GOP, allowing regular middle-class Americans to have sway in the party. Tonight’s travesty is his doing.
We've never faced this before. Our electoral process has been completely hijacked and a criminal Marxist organization now has complete control of the U.S. government. We've just suffered our first-ever coup.
To think they're going to permit us to work within the system to take away their absolute power is to ignore who these people are. There's nothing they won't do to keep us down. Nothing.
For 8 yrs, I supported W through thick and thin (mostly thin). While he may be a class act who meant well, my opinion of his 2 terms in office has changed. Yes, he kept the country safe after 9/11, but he never could articulate to the American public what he was doing or why, which only invited criticism. And although he gave us Roberts & Alito, let’s not forget that he also tried to pawn Harriet Miers off on us as well. W had no backbone to stand up to the Republicans who spent like drunken sailors when they were in control of Congress. He had no fight left in him to do it once the Dems took back control after the ‘06 elections.
Bush 41 squandered a 90% approval rating, which led to Clinton. Bush 43 squandered a 90% approval rating, which led to Obama. I never wish to see the last name of Bush on a national ticket again. The only silver lining I can think of tonight is that the possibility of a Hillary presidency has *almost* been fully extinguished.
bush brought it on himself by continually caving to Nancy and thinking that would make her and her media friends like him.
I agree with you. But is there anything, really, that we can do about these millions of ignorant American voters? Fix the education system, maybe?
Jedidah: “Bush and McCain are not responsible for Obamas win. Millions of ignorant American voters are.”
Oh, you are soooo wrong. Bush and McCain are exactly what’s wrong with the Republican Party. They have effectively ruined the Republican brand, which used to stand for small government and fiscal responsibility. Well, so much for that, eh?
That black woman on the video is going to be really surprised when she doesn’t get a check in the mail for her mortgage and car payment on inauguration day.
Some of the more rabid Obama fans seem to actually believe money is just going to come in the mail to them when he takes office! They don’t understand simple economics, that a miniscule tax cut will be outweighed by unemployment, layoffs, and inflation, and thus higher prices, that result from Obama’s taxes on business and industry, and by increases in property taxes and other taxes that directly affect their net discretionary spending power.
They are going to be real sad when they figure out what an empty suit Obama is.
But folks (kool-aid drinkers) were telling me of this “historic moment”.
Germany had an “historic moment” too.
As my Mom always said, "that and a token will get me on the subway". Bush is a chump and McCain is a pussy. Neither have the balls to fight dirty when needed. At least Bush was a good wartime President.
Wow! You said this on a non-Bush praise thread that we can't touch like the "Pray for Bush" type thread or we'll "have our posting priviledges revoked"? Bush is the worst thing to come to America since Carter! He, and RINOs like McCain, caused this mess after our victory against the Clinton machine in 2000. We had victory and they let us down, despite our giving them unprecedented power in 2004. NEVER AGAIN will my wife and I vote for a RINO. We voted for McCain, while holding our noses, because of Palin. Never again! We will vote for Ron Paul or somebody like him. Never the lesser of two evils again!
Sadly no argument with that.
