On Thursdays Countdown show on MSNBC, New York Times columnist Frank Rich charged that it looks "morally bad" and "idiotic" that Republicans have not elected a black candidate to federal office in six years. The Republican party also seemed to remind Rich of South Africas racist Apartheid policy of the past: "The fact is, this isn`t South Africa 25 years ago, this is a major political party that is essentially all white. And the hierarchy of it is definitely white. There hasn`t been a new black Republican elected to federal office, I think, in six years. And so, what does that tell us about the party? And how does that look to voters? I think it looks like it`s the party of the last century. It looks bad. Not only is it morally bad, but politically. I think it`s idiotic because it`s against the whole demographics of this country and where theyre going."
But Rich ignored the fact that Republicans have routinely tried to elect black candidates to federal and other high offices, only to have them defeated by Democrats in the general election in most cases. Former Lieutenant Governor Michael Steele represented the GOP as he vied for the Senate in 2006, only to be defeated by Democratic candidate Benjamin Cardin in the overwhelmingly Democratic state of Maryland. In the Ohio Governors race in 2006, former Secretary of State Ken Blackwell represented the Republican party but was defeated by Democrat Ted Strickland. And Lynn Swann lost in his bid to unseat Pennsylvanias Democratic Governor Ed Rendell in 2006. Also, according to the Associated Press, black Republicans represented their party in eight congressional districts the same year, but all were unsuccessful.

I dropped a Frank Rich in a porcelain bowl a little while ago.
And if Obama loses, the Democrats will have refused to elect a half-black man.
Racists.
Deborah Honeycutt (black Republican) is running for Congress from my district this year. I hope she beats David Scott, who is also black.
That's a fact. And Frank Rich needs to give himself a reach around.
Sounds lkike this idot is inciting a race war.
who cares what people look like.
Gotta love it when a white boy can’t control himself and just has to play the race card. Kiss it Frankie!
Frank Rick is a self-loathing scumbag!
Content of Character - not color of skin, Mr. Rich.
Rich is taking the US back 150 years. This guy would have owned and bought and sold slaves
Rich is a former Broadway reviewer who got his current political byline by being Pinch’s boyfriend.
Fact.
I caught an interview with Deborah Honeycutt on Steve Marlzberg’s NY WOR talk radio show earlier this week. I hope she wins - she sounds terrific!
Ahhh liberal elitist jew journalists stirring up hate and division - what an idiot. Every black who dares run as a conservative is called every name in the book by the liberal elitists and blacks. Nothing new here - just trying to stir up race hatred - dont let affect you just understand why they do it to keep their power.
Maybe they’ll only be “half racists”? Frankly, I think all this misplaced emphasis on race - all of it seeming to come from the left - is going to cause plenty of trouble next week.
Like it or not, the Republican Party is an “ideas-based” party and not a coalition of identity politics groups based on ethnicity, sexuality and race.
Not to mention that many minorities view the government as their sugar daddy.
So, to recap, the Republican Party is idea-centered and not racial politics-centered.
Could someone who regularly comments on TV make this announcement, please! Fawning to minorities who want government goodies for free will not help us, those people already have a strong democratic party.
Where was the outrage when laws were broken to cut down Michael Steele?
And I have to throw in a quick rant about the mysogyny - since when is it just fine and dandy to have a bound woman hanging, in a depiction of personal hatred and cruelty, like they did to Palin?
Sheesh.
Frank Rich is probably hung like a butterfly...hence his fascination with race. What a fool!
Frank Rich ought to take a dump in a hat and pull it over his ears.
The fact that the GOP hasn't elected a black to Federal Office in several years says more about democrats than it does Republicans.
I say "guilty". Frank Rich should and must take himself out!
If 90 to 95 percent of Blacks vote for Democrats, then there aren’t going to be many of them who wish to run for office as a Republican.
I’d like to see more Blacks in the Republican party, but I’m not going to arrest them and force them to register Republican before they can run for office.
They’re grownups. And even if Democrats, their shills in the press, or anyone else can’t understand this, they can make big decisions for themselves. And when they do, I respect their right to do so.
That doesn’t mean I have to agree with them, or vote for them.
If they choose to join the R.P., and have values I share, they couldn’t keep me from supporting them.
Take that Rich, you sack of s—t d—khead.
He's probably the bottom / catcher anyway, so it wouldn't be an issue . . . .
Jesus said “out of the mouth speaks the desires of the heart.” I say Rich is speaking of his desires
These folks sure have activated a race card that I didn’t know existed. And it’s going to produce blowback.
That’s because Blacks are content to stay on the Democrat plantation and be taken care of by their white liberal masters.
They didn’t vote for the fine GOP Black candidates such as Stillwell in Ohio and Steele in Maryland when they ran for office. You can lead a donkey to water, but you can’t make him drink.
It "looks morallly bad and idiotic" for a newspaper that's "general circulation" to play to half their readers. It's stupid beyond words to run a business into to ground just so the employees can give the finger to the half of Americans who are conservative. To be "in the tank"...
Toe to tow, the New York Times is idiotic.
That’s who I was thinking of...Blackwell, not Stillwell.
And as the black racist mob drags Rich from his desk on Nov. 5 to a lightpost with a rope hanging down, he’ll be sputtering that “some of my best friends are black.”
Liberals are simpletons.
“Ah, the race card! Expect to hear much more from the race baiting commies in the days ahead”
Where were the cries of racism when union thugs were throwing Oreos at Michael Steele?
You vote for race only and you get the likes of Cynthia McKinney, Maxine Waters and Sheila Jackson-Lee. I'm ashamed that these people represent my country.
And what percentage of what minority race are voting for one particular candidate?
“Who cares what people look like.”
I do, because whites are predisposed to becoming racists.
Did Olbermann spit or swallow?
And what do you want to bet he lives in a nearly-all-white neighborhood?
Filthy hypocrite! Whenever there is a Black Republican the media either trashes him/her or makes him/her invisible. Condi Rice, Alan Keyes. Need I say more?
Liberals are pathetic.
We freed the slaves, they enacted Jim Crow laws. I think that balances things out a little.
Ever notice how the Frank Rich types never give up their own jobs for “affirmative action.”
It’s always about screwing someone else, then hiding behind their self-righteousness. I bet this clown is every bit the racist.
You got a cite on that?

Unlike the Dim’s, Republicans vote for candidates based on what they stand for, not what color their skin is. Maryland is a completely Democratic state and would not elect Steele, who is black and conservative. Who were the racists in that election?
Have Rice and Keyes been elected to a nationwide office in the past 6 years?
They could win, but chose not to run. Why don’t we see if there have been black candidates willing to run as Republicans during the past six years? That would shut Rich up.
No.
According to Olbermann and Rich, the word “Homogeneous” is a new code word for “White”.
