San Francisco treat
Waterbury Republican-American ^ | Editorial

As if San Francisco wasn't loopy enough, voters will be asked Tuesday to pass a ballot initiative, endorsed by the Democratic Party, that would bar police enforcing California's prostitution laws.

The goal is to free up $11 million a year now spent collaring hookers so police can go after the real criminals: people who cook with trans fats; tote groceries in plastic bags, think bad thoughts about homosexuals, etc. If voters approve, hookers would enjoy the same special rights Frisco has bestowed upon illegal aliens, porn peddlers and medical-marijuana potheads.

Among other things, a yes vote would increase prostitution, sex slavery, and rates of crime and sexually transmitted diseases. But the Bay Area Sex Workers Advocacy Network says prostitutes would benefit because they could unionize.

Think about that for a second. Unionized hookers would negotiate (with whom, no one says) a contract that would pay them union scale, based on seniority rather than skills and attributes their customers ordinarily demand, and set strict workplace rules.

Moreover, since unions are in business to protect bad workers, even the worst prostitutes would have lifetime job security.

Unionization, then, would lead to higher prices, lower quality of service and ultimately reduced demand. So in trying to protect the professionals, the city might very well wreck the profession while turning the experience into something like a visit to the Motor Vehicles Department.

One more thing: Unionized hookers would have the right to strike, in which case one trusts the city would come up with a different term to describe their non-union replacements.

It shoud bring the cost of a Hooker down in San Francisco.

But its still a cash business. How will Obama collect income tax on it?

I prefer the Alaskan/Canadian policy: keep it OFF the streets, but keep the brothels open and regulated.

How Stan's Fag Disco will handle the issue would be a bit different, I'm afraid.

"contract that would pay them union scale, based on seniority rather than skills"

I would have thought that sniority would improve work skills......

And what about "on the job training"....?

At least its not Germany where several female unemployed were offered jobs in brothels......

This is bad if it passes because its not the same situation as in areas where it is legal. Where prostitution is legal, like in areas of Nevada, there is government regulation on it. So at the very least it is kept under control and doesnt fly off into drug trading and rampant spread of STDs.

This thing in San Fran is “decriminalization.” Which means the pimps are going to run wild and the police wont be able to do anything to stop them. Drugs and such will become an even bigger problem.
