Eggs tainted with the industrial chemical melamine were detected last month in the same northeast Chinese city from where contaminated ones sold in Hong Kong originated, an official said Monday.
The safety inspector from Dalian city's food and drug department said tests were carried out on eggs for melamine in the wake of the scandal about the widespread use of the chemical in Chinese dairy products.
"Agricultural authorities carried out some checks into eggs after the (tainted) milk powder incident was disclosed, the official, who declined to be named, told AFP by phone.
Some eggs were found to be tainted with melamine, which were then destroyed, he said, without disclosing the quantity.
"We checked eggs in September and when we checked again in October, no melamine was found in eggs," the official said.
The melamine is believed to have found its way into the eggs via animal feed fed to chickens, according to the official.
Eggs produced by the Hanwei Group in Dalian were found to be tainted with melamine in tests carried out by Hong Kong's Centre for Food Safety, officials in the southern Chinese territory said over the weekend.
The findings have led Hong Kong to expand its testing of food imported from China to pork, farmed fish and offal products, Hong Kong officials said.
Hanwei, one of China's biggest egg producers, refused to comment Monday as reports of the Hong Kong findings circulated widely in mainland papers.
"We are still investigating. I don't know much about it now," a Hanwei sales manager surnamed Yu told AFP by phone.
Food safety officials in Dalian held an emergency meeting Monday morning to deal with the fall-out from the tainted Hong Kong eggs, the Dalian food inspector said.

Isn't that great, they are worried about the “fallout”.
And we keep right on importing goods from them.
Thank goodness we don't import food from them. Or do we?
Was the chemical put into the eggs by the chicken or by some horrid Chinese scientist? Was it on the outside of the egg or in an egg product after the egg was opened?
4-H chicken leader
The article came up finally. But the chickens should have showed signs of sickness.....
Apparently it got in via the chicken feed. Kinda scary, but I don’t eat anything from China (unless it’s not listed—I do worry that some ingredients may be imported from China but not listed on the the label.
We import lots of food. I picked up a bag of garlic at Sam's, and it was from China.
Be careful.
Use a dangerous chemical as a fertilizer, thus putting it in the feed, and then see it show up in your food... hmmm... imagine that.
I just don’t believe that the Chinese are that stupid. I think they hope to get away with it - and only act when there is a public enough issue made (like pets getting sick and dying in the US).
What is the Chinese attraction to Melamine and Lead????
Check out canned mushrooms - the majority on store shelves are from China.
I’ll check. I rarely buy them as my husband doesn’t like canned ones. I probably have a few old cans in the pantry tho.
Part of it issue, I suspect is that they don’t have the checks and balances we have here, they don’t have the same standards, and they could care less if their people, who have basically no voice, are harmed. I personally think we should not allow any product into the US if the country of origin doesn’t have the same basic standards the American consumer is protected by here.
