There are many ways to lose a presidential election. John McCain is losing in a way that threatens to take the entire Republican Party down with him.
A year ago, the Arizona senator's team made a crucial strategic decision. McCain would run on his (impressive) personal biography. On policy, he'd hew mostly to conservative orthodoxy, with a few deviations -- most notably, his support for legalization for illegal immigrants. But this strategy wasn't yielding results in the general election. So in August, McCain tried a bold new gambit: He would reach out to independents and women with an exciting and unexpected vice presidential choice.
That didn't work out so well either. Gov. Sarah Palin connected with neither independents nor women. She did, however, ignite the Republican base, which has come to support her passionately. And so, in this last month, the McCain campaign has Palinized itself to make the most of its last asset....
Sure enough, the base has responded. After months and months of wan enthusiasm among Republicans, these last weeks have at last energized the core of the party. But there's a downside: The very same campaign strategy that has belatedly mobilized the Republican core has alienated and offended the great national middle, which was the only place where the 2008 election could have been won....
Republicans need to face some strategic realities. Our resources are limited, and our message is failing. We cannot fight on all fronts. We are cannibalizing races that we must win and probably can win in order to help a national campaign that is almost certainly lost. In these final 10 days, our goal should be: senators first....

The GOP may have reached that point.
David Frum is a Vichy Republican I do not care what the man says, he is a Obama supporter.
Rephrase that: John McCain is losing in a way that threatens to take the entire American way of life down with him.
Another Bush Moron, Thanks W!
Guys like him WANT us to lose, because they fear Palin. They want to blame Palin, when in actuality it was their damn lame ass nominee that actually was the source of most of our problems.
But funny thing. These polls that all these morons are using to call the elections over aren’t coming to fruition.

We are going to win.
Too many stories like this out of the MSM this weekend, I think they are trying to demoralize the voters and McCain is doing better than they want to admit.
Whatta bunch of wusses!
He has been off the reservation for quite a while now.
Oh, Horsesh*t.
Please note that I use only one asterisk.
The Republican party is just fine, and this election is not only winnable, it’s practically in the bag.
McCain and Palin just need to keep on doing exactly what they are doing. They are right in tune, with plenty of cowbell where needed, and by election day it will be a barn burner.
Don’t listen to people with a hidden agenda; to discourage, deflate and depress.
Remember, their purpose is to help the bad guys win.
Frum is an effin idiot and one of the dolts who is responsible for the moderate Republican Presidential candidate we have today. So what’s Frums solution? Move further to the left. Well, Obama already occupies the socialist position and evidently the American voter prefers the real socialist to the faux socialist.
B.S....
Triage would have been far more appropriate with Bob Dole's campaign, especially since Republicans in Congress could have easily turned Clinton's advertising to their own advantage. Clinton was crowing about all the great legislation he had signed, most of which had come from the Republicans in Congress. Had Republicans simply agreed with him in their advertising, I would think they could have easily gained seats.
Thank the voters of Florida. Thank the millions of Democrats who are going to cross over to vote against the Marxist. Thank the media for depressing Obama turnout with ridiculous overconfidence. Oh, and thank them for the riots too.
My neighboring city will probably burn, but that’s okay. I’m armed and I have plenty of marshmallows.
Barry Soetoro?
The only question mark is Colorado.
I have to agree. You have to wonder if many of these people that are speaking out this way do so because of the profession they have chosen. With the media being taken over by leftists it’s hard to tell if they are part of a “media Bradley affect” where they make these comments as a way to keep from being shut out of the business. Or have they been around the far left ideology so long they have forgotten that there is more to this country than a sound bite and a picture.
Hey Dave! YOU are not a Republican so don’t worry about it. Go vote for your “messiah”!
Well, he is a W! Vichy Republican, but we know when W! is leaving the stage, unlike Frum...
Can we check him for an expiration date or something? Can W take him back to Crawford with him?
I maintain hope that this will encourage people to really go out and vote for McCain instead of discourage.
Deserves repeating:
“The Republican party is just fine, and this election is not only winnable, its practically in the bag.
McCain and Palin just need to keep on doing exactly what they are doing. They are right in tune, with plenty of cowbell where needed, and by election day it will be a barn burner.

Keep working and praying...
We know you’re praying for this, stevie. Don’t bet on it.
Funny, now John Mccain is Bob Dole to these people.
“Our” media is much more effective at reaching us then it ever was in 1996, there will be no “were is the outrage” moments, in fact, McCain is beginning to rally, this race is going down to the last few days.
Dole was cooked in mid October.
Frum rhymes with scum.
McCain/Palin will win this election. It may not even be close.
Then we are going to boycott RINO scum like Frum, Parker, Noonan, Weld, Carlson, and Powell Sr.
Any Republican who said a positive word about the communist Obama should be reviled and despised worse than Benedict Arnold. There will be no understanding or forgiveness for this.
The way I see it, there is a Inside DC Elite that walks in lockstep, there are apparent differences with underlying sameness.
Frum is merely one voice in the sameness, the fact that he is a Vichy Republican is somehow supposed to add weight to his opinions.
We should especially cherish the Writers/Thinkers who are sticking by McCain, Goldberg, Steyn, Krauthammer, Andy McCarthy.
I think the plan was for McCain to lose like a gentleman and problem is that Sarah doesn’t like losing and she has ignited a lot of us who could have cared less if McCain had picked one of the usual suspects for VP.
Maybe I’m wrong about McCain being set up to lose but I’m having trouble understanding some of his so called strategy.

David Frum Network News: Dateline October 26, 2008
"Conservatives, it is hopeless. All is lost!
Do not waste your vote on November 4.
Sleep in. Watch Tyra.
Barack Obama has won all 50 states."
He is like Bob Dole but with one difference: Bob Dole didn't have Sarah Palin to drag him across the finish line.
Stevie, Stevie, Stevie....
Is that just wishful thinking on your part? McCain and Palin are riding high, and have defeated a muslim, marxist, pro-abortion, alien terrorist that sought the Presidency of the United States.
McCain can win and help downticket candidates by criticizing Obama on Wright, Cone and Black Liberation Theology.
People will be repulsed by the truth. This is the Democrat’s and MSM’s Mark Foley scandal. They are covering it up and supporting this conman.
Win or Lose certain names need to be remembered: Brooks, Frum, Weld, Powell, Barnes, Parker, Buckley, Hagl, etc.. Never again should a word they say matter to anyone. Good bye and good riddance.
Crazy. Just plain crazy.
There is a given roster of pundits you know this type of writing comes from even before your eye scans across to the authors slot and likewise a roster of freepers you can depend on to be the OP before you even glance further down. For our freeper friends, I sure hope you’re getting royalties from these defeatists.
You have bashed Palin on other threads re the clothing cost issue now you post Canadian Frum’s article.
Many on FR especially in the past few days are posting repeat threads or finding it amusing trying to turn McCain / Palin supporters against the candidates.
Those on FR who don’t want to support McCain / Palin
your other choice is the Marxist Obama.
Not very difficult to see where some on FR stand.
Maybe Im wrong about McCain being set up to lose but Im having trouble understanding some of his so called strategy.<
I believe that you are right on the money. Obama and the financial crisis was all set up. McCain was picked to lose. Then McCain surprised everyone with his Palin pick and threw a monkey wrench into the elitists' machinery. It really pissed off these elitist Neo-Cons and their 'RAT comrades. That is why all of them have been brutal towards Governor Palin and her family, including Palin's infant, Trig.
FWIW:
Still a Canadian citizen, he was one of the few foreign nationals working within the Bush White House.
Frum announced on his blog that he was joining Rudolph Giuliani’s presidential campaign as a senior foreign policy adviser.
On abortion, Frum has stated that he “is not pro-life” and “think[s] abortion ought to be legal in the first trimester.

Let's rephrase it again:
John McCain is winning. He's winning because he was brilliant enough to recognize what Sarah Palin had to offer. Listening to groveling ignorant, defeatist losers is a worthless activity.
I just cannot understand how the media was able to go so far left the way it has. We have known for a while now that this was happening, but until now they at least made an attempt to disguise it. They no longer feel the need to do that and with all the reports we see about the financial problems many of the newspapers are having you would think they would get a clue that most people do not like the fact that they are so biased. Maybe they think the Messiah will support them in the style to which they have become accustomed once they get him elected. I guess they haven’t looked under his bus lately.
Even Adelman came from the Bush 41 crowd — Powell was from Bush 41 and the list goes on. I wouldn’t give you two cents for the lot of them that are writing and endorsing Obama and trashing McCain/Palin right now. As far as I am concerned they can stay with the Dems. Their hatred of Palin is telling IMHO.
The way I understand it, in DC, everything is based on access to the White House, the Obamao Camp, is completely and utterly RUTHLESS when it comes to allowing access to “insiders”.
Look at the TV stations whose interviewer asked Biden if Obama was a Marxist...they were cut off.
Frum is merely diving into the tank to try and ensure invitations to dinners and speaking engagements and what have you.
When Krauthammer came out in support of McCain, he basically said he would not be invited to those things, and THAT is why I give him a ton of respect, if McCain doesn’t win, he is frozen out.
Well said!
But at least he was smart enough to pick a running mate that can do it. ;-)
Have some of Obama’s millions made it into this guy’s pocket?
Just remind them what Jim Robinson had to say on the thread he put up — my new reply to the naysayers on here:
http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/2114462/posts
And if you’re one of those hard cases who can’t quite see your way clear to vote affirmatively for McCain-Palin and against the America-hating Marxist Barak Hussein Obama, well, I’d advise you to button up your lip before someone busts it up for you. Free Republic is Mccain-Palin territory!!
You heard it here first!
Go get ‘em FReepers!!
