CBS: If Dems Gain 60 Senate Seats, They Can Tell Republicans to ‘Shut Up’
Newsbusters ^ | October 23, 2008 | Kyle Drennen

On Thursday’s CBS Early Show, co-host Maggie Rodriguez discussed the congressional races with the editor of the liberal New Republic magazine, Michael Crowley, and asked: "Now, if the Democrats get to 60 seats, as they hope to, what would be significant about that?" Crowley replied: "...in the Senate the other -- the opposition can filibuster. And if you have 60 votes you can basically tell them to 'shut up and we're going to pass our bill, sit down.' So 60 votes is the magic number because the opposition, if they have 41, can draw things out and prevent you from passing a bill so 60 is a magic number and it's one Democrats are really hoping they can get..." Rodriguez never identified Crowley’s liberal leanings and Thursday’s segment marks his forth appearance on the Early Show since July, always depicted as a neutral political analyst.

Throughout the segment, Rodriguez highlighted possible seats that Democrats could gain: "In North Carolina, a seat that's been held by -- for 36 years by a Republican, could be in danger of going to a Democrat, right?" Crowley replied: "It's a sign of the kind of year we're in...North Carolina is becoming a more Democratic state. Democratic registration has just really exploded, outpacing Republicans...there's a lot of Democratic energy in that state right now." Rodriguez moved on to Kentucky: "Kentucky, red state through and through. John McCain will probably get it, but not necessarily Mitch McConnell, who's been there for two decades." Crowley responded: "McConnell, I think maybe seen as tied to the Bush Administration, helping them shepard some of their things through. Supported the bailout bill, which his colleague from Kentucky opposed. He's being tied to special interests. So really dramatic race there."

If the RATs get 60, Joe Lieberman and Ben Nelson become the two most important men in the Senate.

Some of the most famous laws that the Democrats passed when they were able to tell Republicans to shut up were called Jim Crow laws.

“Shut up & sit down” to any disagreement is the Left’s American Dream.

That’s what I love about liberals/demoncrats—they are SO open to public discourse and discussion about policy—the same way the KGB encouraged opposite viewpoints!!!

God help us all.

Let’s see if Matthews and Company pile on this guy for his “oversimplification” of Senate rules the way they did Sarah earlier in the week...

Yeah, back when they owned the Senate in the 1930’s, the Democrats were able to tell Republicans to shut up when the Republicans tried to pass ANTI-LYNCHING LAWS.

Now the Dems will pass the Fairness Doctrine and tell EVERYBODY to shut up.

Welcome to the Union of American Socialist Republics.

I believe if McCain can do it(....and I do believe he can do it...)that he will drag republican senators and house members with him for a total increase.

I know I am a optimist, but being pessimistic is counter productive.

Can you send me a link on the 1930s Senate anti-lynching laws? When did they finally get it passed?

If that happens the Repubs should go on vacation for two years. Then we can blame it all on the Commiecrats. In fact I would like a two year strike of all taxpayers. Lets see em tax me If I do not work. I can live on my savings. It would be woth it. 90% of the stuff I buy is descretionary anyways.

Just google it, but here's an excerpt from a Fox news story:

Twenty lynchings were reported in 1935. During that time, nearly 200 anti-lynching bills were introduced in Congress, and three passed the House. Seven presidents between 1890 and 1952 petitioned Congress to pass a federal law. But the Senate, with Southern conservatives wielding their filibuster powers, refused to act. With the enactment of civil rights laws in the 1960s and changes in national attitudes, the issue faded away.

"Southern conservatives" = Democrats, at that time.

Yeah I found that story, the 2005 apology when the Senate was run by Republicans, I also knew about the Jim Crow laws, laws designed to foster segregation, but had forgotten about the Democrats blocking anti-lynching laws.

I knew the KKK was formed as the Democrat terror wing to get them back into power and lynchings were a tool of making that happen. About the 1870s, Democrats regained power through affiliated militia terrorism(KKK) of black and white Republicans, assassination of opposition community leaders and political activists, and intimidation and restriction of voters at the polls. White Democrats finally secured one-party rule in the South, comprising such a powerful voting block in Congress that they consistently defeated or blocked Federal bills against lynching.

Jim Crow laws were written in the 1870’s and lasted until the 1950, the laws of segregation, were all put in place by Democrats.

I want to crystallize this history some more, so will look around. Thanks for jogging my memory.

If McCain/Palin wins, she as President of the Senate, needs to take her constitutionally-granted seat as President of the Senate and run things over there. Enough of this crap, letting subordinates who aren’t in your party run the show.

That’s how it used to be. That’s how it should be now. Let’s see the Dems b1tch about that. IN THE CONSTITUTION YOU LIBERAL A$$HOLES! Palin can run the place and should.

North Carolina is becoming a more Democratic state. Democratic registration has just really exploded

I'm confident ACORN has a set up there in North Carolina, we can probably count on that.
