Mexico - At least 18 prisoners died in a jail riot in Mexico near the U.S. border on Monday, some in a fire after a gun battle between rival gangs.
The riot started in the early hours of Monday in Reynosa, a manufacturing city across the border from Texas where the powerful Gulf drug cartel is active, the local state attorney general's office said.
"There was a shootout and then a fire. There are charred bodies among the dead," a spokesman at the attorney general's office said.
Prison director Apolonio Villarreal told a news conference in Reynosa the death toll had risen to 18 men.
Paramedics at the prison, which has 2,000 inmates but was designed for half that number, told Reuters as many as 25 inmates could have died in the clashes.
Villarreal said rival gangs fought for about three hours with knives and guns, setting fire to a part of the prison with matches and gasoline.
Heavily armed soldiers and police quelled the fight and surrounded the prison, but some family members pushed their way in, desperate to find out if their relatives were among the dead.

Well, I guess the prisoners feast tonight...
Hmmm, sounds like a great way to cull the heard. Also, Mexico could have its army surround the prison, remove all the gaurds, have a helicopter drop in weapons and ammo and let nature take its course. Prison population over-crowding drops like a stone, maintainance costs reduced and an incentive to those not in prison to see yet another reason they should change their behavior.
I lost my job to that Mexican city. The company I worked for must fortify the plant down there.
18 less votes for Obama.
Maybe they shouldn't let inmates have guns.
Old Mexico!

Dead democrats vote in Texas.
Holy Smokes...!
Not only can the dead vote, they can riot near our border!
How is this different than a street in any Mexican city??
