$1 million donation by California Teachers Association to oppose Prop 8

Next month, California voters will decide whether to eliminate the right of same-sex couples to marry by altering the state's constitution. This week, the California Teachers Association announced it opposes Prop 8 by donating $1 million to fight the initiative.

Prop 8 seeks to ban same-sex marriages in California. The teachers union said it decided to oppose Prop 8 during its state council meeting in June. The CTA felt that it needed to donate the gift to help defeat the measure.

"CTA views Prop 8 as a human rights issue. Everyone should be allowed equal protection under the law, and no one should have existing rights taken away," said Frank Wells, a CTA spokesperson.

The gift was prompted after television ads from supporters of Prop 8 suggested it would stop schools from teaching about gay marriage. CTA teachers said the claim is false.

"Parents will always in the state of California have approval on us. So if there is no approval, it's not going to be taught in the classroom," said Donald Weeks, a Santa Maria elementary school teacher and union member.

One CTA member who agrees with Prop 8 said she does not always have the same political views as her union.

"I do support my union's educational activities. I don't necessarily support all their political activities that have nothing to do with education," said Ingrid Flores, an elementary school teacher.

Flores feels the money could have been spent better.

"I am disappointed. I think a million dollars could be better spent supporting No Child Left Behind political action," said Flores.

Earlier this summer, the teachers union contributed $250,000 to defeat Prop 8. This new gift is an additional donation.

$1.2mil in union dues to support gay marriage.

And some pro-union person please tell me why unions are needed again? I’m sure there is some “health and safety” message in this somewhere.

If Prop 8 doesn’t pass, marry your kids to avoid any inheritance taxes for them.

THAT would awaken the Dhiminicarts faster than any AIDS or Syphilis epidemic spreading through the water supply in Congress.

CTA is a joke and union leaders are losers. Throwing $1 million to defeat Prop 8, which will easily win, is a waste of teachers’ money. Sad how people with problems (union leaders) waste the money of healthy people.

There's only one thing incorrect in that statement, so-called "marriage" between two people of the same gender is NOT a right, it's an abomination.

God bestowed certain unalienable rights on the human race when He created man, and a right to marry or to have perverted sexual relations with another person of the same gender is not one of those rights..

What should a teacher’s union have to do with the marriage issue? If there are any teachers that support proposition 8, they ought to demand their dues back.
