LUCASVILLE, Ohio -- Ohio has executed a 5-foot-7, 267-pound double murderer who argued he was too fat to die humanely by lethal injection.
Richard Cooey died at 10:28 a.m. Tuesday at the Southern Ohio Correctional Facility in Lucasville.
There were no immediate reports of problems finding suitable veins to deliver the deadly chemicals.
His attorneys had argued that his weight problem could make it difficult for prison staff to access a vein. A prisons spokeswoman said earlier that Cooey received a pre-execution exam and was cleared.
Cooey was the first inmate executed in Ohio in more than a year, and the first since the end of an unofficial national moratorium on executions that began last year while the U.S. Supreme Court reviewed Kentucky's lethal injection procedure.
The 41-year-old Cooey killed two University of Akron students in 1986.

Funny - I lived in Ohio during the year in question but unfortunately I know far more about this cretin than I have read about his victims in 22 years.
I guess a wet sock jammed in his fat mouth and pinching his nose is out?

Oh, and I am just a tad disappointed that Tubby did not die long ago and in excrutiating pain.

WE as taxpayers paid about $500k + to keep this fat azz around...just to eliminate him.

Sometimes I think they don't know how stoopid their writing sounds.
And other times, I think they just don't care.
I thought of this story the last time a fat guy got in my ambulance and said a vein would be hard to get. As I gathered a start kit, needles and a saline lock....I thought to myself......YOU are my pincushion! Dang, if I didn’t get in on my first attempt....with ease. Only got to poke him once.
In six months or so, his nickname will be Slim.
How in Hell can you eat all that knowing you are going to die in moments ?

I was an witness to an execution for the guy who murdered my grandmother. I can tell you first hand, he got off easy compared to what he did to the victims and their families.
My favorite were the protesters outside the prison while I was waiting. Unbelievable man...
So this piece of human slime received a pre-execution exam in order to make sure that...what, execution wouldn’t do him any harm??!! The left must be very proud! And we, the sheeple, read this tripe, bleat and head to the office as we watch our rights disappear along with all sanity. We must be proud as well.
The wheels of justice typically turn slowly in the USA, especially when a death sentence is involved.
Texas seems to have the process streamlined more than most other states. Ohio is probably slower than average, but I don't know for sure.

This guy got his just desserts (badda-bing!), but don’t think the “too fat to die” defense is over the top for our looney justice system.
Mitchell Rupe, in Washington state, successfully had his capital punishment rescinded because he was too fat to hang. The risk of decapitation was too great for our squirmy collective stomachs. I guess we want them dead, but still pretty.
That sack of rancid Twinkies, who killed two women in cold blood, ended up dying of liver failure. Can’t remember if anyone floated the possibility of a liver transplant at the time, but it would have been a light-the-torches moment.
The fool didn’t even have enough sense to ask for Heinz 57 steak sauce..:-)

It’s a shame that sympathies have switched from the victims to the dirt bags who commited the crime. I never understood that. My heart goes out to the families on this.

Thank you for posting that. Someone should set up a website that memorializes murder victims at least as well as others memorialize final meals.

I wonder why nobody's tried it. Nitrogen's deadly stuff, and it doesn't even activate the gasping-for-air reflex so there's little indication anything's wrong until you start passing out.
Yep, a tank of nitrogen from a welding gas supply company, a pressure regulator, one length of hose, and a nose/mouth mask. Strap the condemned down, hook all together, supply nitrogen at 1.1 atmospheres, wait 5 min check for brain wave activity. If there is brain wave activity, check to make sure the nitrogen is working properly and wait 5 more min. Repeat till no brain activity.
Go better so nobody can complain about inhumane stuff:
Give a mask with a standard oxy/nitro mixture that goes through a conditioner that puts it at a specific humidity and temperature, and adds a pleasant odor (the oxy and nitro cylinders may have different odors, so mask them). At the proper moment dial down the oxy and crank up the nitro. There is no way the condemned can sense that the switch has happened.

It won’t take 5 minutes — anyone breathing pure nitrogen will pass out within 30 seconds and be dead within a couple of minutes as respiration increases in a vain attempt to send oxygen to the tissues. Three workers died on the Space Shuttle Columbia in the late seventies when they walked into a room pressurized with pure nitrogen. They passed out and died before they knew anything was wrong. Nitrogen is quite dangerous to work around.
