WASHINGTON - More than 10,000 people have signed an online petition urging the Army to let an Iraqi puppy come home with a Minnesota soldier, who fears that "Ratchet" could be killed if left behind.
"I just want my puppy home," Sgt. Gwen Beberg of Minneapolis wrote to her mother in an e-mail Sunday from Iraq, soon after she was separated from the dog following a transfer. "I miss my dog horribly." Beberg, 28, is scheduled to return to the U.S. next month.
Ratchet's defenders are ratcheting up their efforts to save him. On Monday, the program coordinator for Operation Baghdad Pups, which is run by Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals International, left for a trip to the Middle East to try to get the puppy to the U.S........[snip]
[snip]......Operation Baghdad Pups' program coordinator, Terry Crisp, is scheduled to arrive in Baghdad on Wednesday. Crisp said the adopted dogs left behind face death on Iraqi streets.
She said Iraqis view dogs and cats as nuisances and carriers of disease, and U.S. soldiers have rescued many of them from abuse.

They should know.
No dogs allowed!
(But thousands of “refugees” are A-OK.)
Is this correct?
If such an order exists, however much we may not like it, it certainly qualifies as a "lawful order".
All US military personnel swear to obey lawful orders.
I don’t know, but it does sound reasonable, if a bit harsh.
Is this correct?
Yes.
It's part of General Order No. 1.
Soldiers have adopted pets before and even gotten them home, but the rule is that none of us (we civilians attached to the military are under G.O. #1 as well) are supposed to feed or adopt pets here.
90 years ago, Rin Tin Tin never got that memo.
I never said I supported it, I just stated what General Order #1 says. Believe me, I had nothing whatsoever to do with drafting that thing. We all hate it.
An example of what happens when you let women into the military.
(ducking for cover)
“...but the rule is that none of us (we civilians attached to the military are under G.O. #1 as well) are supposed to feed or adopt pets here.”
There’s a reson for that and this is one example. Having a pet is like having a dependent and you’re in a war zone. I’d rather people be focusing on the mission and getting their butts home alive.
“Iraqis view dogs and cats as nuisances”
It is ironic that in the hate-filled muslim world, dogs and cats seem to be the only beings capable of pure love. Those freaks don’t even deserve the love of a dog.
Iraqi puppy? They're granting citizenship to pets over there??
Which general are you? Just wondering if we've met. :)
There are several reasons for the pet ban, most of them relative to security issues.
But you'd be surprised at how many pets, (mostly dogs) have been ferreted out of Iraq to the U.S. (via Kuwait or Jordan for shots, quarantine, etc.) for some soldier who became attached. A few of these stories have made the papers and many more have not.
Oh, yeah. I believe you. All kinds of things have probably been ferreted out of Iraq.
I don’t know why this soldier and dog were singled out; maybe she drew too much attention or something. As always, there’s more to a story than got printed.
Another poster on a forum I frequent is very good friends with the soldier involved in this. She has posted this video to Youtube.

Especially the no beer part. That really got me worked up. Nothing would be better after a long, hot day of missions than to grab a cold beer and play a little "NCAA Football" with my PL buddies. Alas, my chow hall Gatorade stash had to suffice.
Yep...we all hate that part the most. And that near-beer just tastes awful. ;-)
When I go home on leave, I am such a lightweight. LOL
