Palin Stays on the Offensive at Huge Va. Rally
Washington Post ^ | 10/13/08 | Juliet Eilperin

Posted on 10/13/2008 1:05:35 PM PDT by nickcarraway

GOP vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin continued attacking Democratic nominee Barack Obama before a crowd of roughly 20,000 outside the Richmond International Raceway, while also promising that she and John McCain would help revive the U.S. economy.

Suggesting that Obama would undermine a possible American victory in Iraq -- "Just once I would like to hear Barack Obama say he'd like America to win" -- Palin said the Democrat would jeopardize the economy further by raising taxes and expanding the federal government.

SNIP

Kilgore sought to bolster the mood of the crowd by attacking the media, suggesting reporters were trying to distort the public's perception of the race.

"Now I'm not sure who answers all those national polls but if we took a poll today, it would be John McCain in a landslide," he said, prompting cheers from the audience.

"Now my friends, the liberal elite" -- a round of boos ensured -- "they want you to believe this race is over." After another chorus of boos, Kilgore said: "They want you to give up, they want you to stay home. Thank God you didn't listen. We are on the verge of a great victory, and victory starts right here in Virginia."

Hank Williams Jr. took up the same theme when he sang a tune of the "McCain-Palin tradition." He mocked the "left-wing media" for writing negative stories about Republicans but quickly added, "The American people don't believe them anyway, you see."

Washington Post story?

“...before a crowd of roughly 20,000 outside the Richmond International Raceway,...”

That means it was a lot closer to 50,000 in attendance.

If the compost says the crowd was “roughly” 20,000, I guarantee it was actually considerably on the plus side of that “rough” figure.

I was watching it on stream and they never panned the crowd so I coudn’t tell. It sounded pretty large and positive though.
I asked a question earlier and on a different thread that I am still looking for an answer to: Did anyone see zero on FOX @ 2 o’clock 2 day giving his econ speech and notice those pseudo Puerto Rican flags interspersed with Our Flag?
Any input?

Love it:
The Perjurer & The Pantsuit ^ The Plagerist together only drew 3,000 in Penn..a Dem stronghold!!!!

This weekends NASCAR race is at Richmond. Wish they would ask Sarah or Todd to wave the green flag at a NASCAR race.

"The crowd was made up almost entirely of committed partisans".

I'm so amused when I see all the feeble attempts at pooping on Sarah's parade in liberal rags.

Of course her audiences are mostly committed partisans, numnutz. Y'know, the one's who turn out to swell the crowd for their candidate, who donate, who ring doorbells, who write letters to the editor.....all that middle-America stuff, y'know.

The do-nothing independents, moderates, non-partisans and middle-of-the-roaders who don't know who to vote for yet sure don't show up for these rallys, you idiot reporter. Y'know, those "independents" who are the smartest ones in the room over sauturne and biscotti, y'know, the ones who look down their noses at crowds, cheering, chanting, flag-waving and all that middle-America yahoo stuff.

I'm sure the fainters, the google-eyed and the panty-throwers at Obama's speeches are "mostly non-committed" too,....oh, yeah, sure they are. They're partisan just like Sarah's crowds, you faggy reporter.

I'm thinking of buying a bird so I can use the Washington Compost for a cage-liner.

That, my friends, is a devastating line.

I hope John uses that one at the debate.

"Hahahahaha, if WaPo admits 20,000, imagine what the truth is!"

LOL. And besides which, the WaPo probably doesn't want to realize or admit that once a number that size gets THAT large (in speaking of converging people,) a dozen TENS OF THOUSAND give or take, is IRRELEVANT.

This is so pawn3d.

I heard buz about those flags on another thread; hopefully some enterprising FReeper has a screen capture...Puerto Rican or some new agey, 0bama-UN-New World Order flag?

Hill/Bill&/Biden only brought out 3k? Here in blue PA? Ouch...meanwhile Gov. Palin needs to keep being moved to bigger and bigger venues (and she wows them). Awesome.

And the Democrats were out on a Sunday, rather than a Monday afternoon. Getting a good turnout on Sundays is much easier than Monday afternoons, especially when the advance notice is so short.

This is about a 1/4 of the crowd. See the white tent about halfway up on the left? There are equally as many people beyond that as you see in the foreground. There are as many people behind where we were in the bleachers. And about 2 or 3 times that to the left.

I'll try to get better crowd pictures posted later tonight.

How about nearly 20,000 on a Monday MORNING? Crowd estimates were between 15 and 20,000 for the McCain/Palin joint appearance in VA Beach this morning.......and I believe it, 'cause I was there.

Before they changed the venue to this racetrack location, ticket requests were at around 24,000. Most folks I talked to today got their tickets after the venue change (us included).

20,000 is definitely low.

I'm so glad they changed the location to a larger venue! EVERYONE that wants to see/hear her, should get to.

I wish the next time they come to Colorado they would have their rally at Invesco Field. I'm sure we could get well over 20,000 as well! [As long as Governor Palin is speaking ;o)]

I absolutely agree with you. If there were close to that many at the VaB CC, there had to be more than double that at the Raceway.

I understand your point, however I saw something this morning that I had never expected to see. I was about 15 people back from where the "barriers" were around the stage, which I thought was an awesome spot. Shortly after Senator McCain started speaking, a number of people who were at the front started making their way back through the crowd and headed for the exits. It was as if it didn't matter what he had to say.

We were there to see and hear them both. She didn't give a speech like she did in Richmond, she was introducing him. We didn't get up at 4am, get our daughter excused from school, and drive 100 miles to walk out on the Senator's speech. I found it odd those people did that, and not just a little bit insulting to both candidates, as well as the people that didn't get such up front and personal spaces.

Maybe it's just me.

I agree with you 100%

I'm just meant that if it is just Senator McCain, he probably wouldn't draw 30,000 in Denver.

I'm glad you got to hear BOTH of them today!

So am I!!!

I understand what you are saying, and totally see your point, most especially after what I witnessed this morning.

I was personally offended. If you're not going to stay for the "main event" why hog up the best places to see it?

Yes, both of them were going to be there on stage together, but anyone with an above room temperature IQ would know that the top name on the ticket was the "main event." If they only wanted to hear Hank Williams, Jr. and Sarah Palin, the should have driven to Richmond for her afternoon appearance.

I was there. It took more than 1.5 hours to empty the parking lots with about 5 exits. It was held at a site inside the raceway complex and about half the parking lots were full. It seemed that there were at least 15,000 CARS, plus buses and RVs.
