Fiscal crisis puts global warming on shelf
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 10/12/8 | Zachary Coile

Posted on 10/12/2008 7:52:12 PM PDT by SmithL

The financial crisis and a deepening economic downturn are threatening to delay efforts to deal with another pressing global crisis: climate change.

Hopes for action had been running high since both Republican John McCain and Democrat Barack Obama had pledged to make cutting U.S. greenhouse gas emissions a top priority. But environmentalists now fear that the next president may be more focused on reviving a flat-lining economy, and Congress could be wary of supporting any measures that might slow growth or raise energy prices for consumers.

"The truth is there is a very large question mark hanging over the idea that Congress would take economy-wide action on global warming with the economy in such anemic shape," said Frank O'Donnell, president of Clean Air Watch.

In the short term, a declining global economy could reduce the growth in greenhouse gas emissions as consumption of goods and energy usage drops. But world leaders warn it could also undermine efforts to find long-term solutions.

European Union leaders are discussing delaying planned emissions cuts in response to the financial crisis. United Nations officials worry that wealthier nations may cut back on commitments to help poorer countries invest in clean energy or adapt to the impacts of warming, which is seen as crucial in getting a global deal to reduce emissions.

"You can't pick an empty pocket," Yvo de Boer, the U.N.'s top climate official, told the Associated Press last week.

Sen. Barbara Boxer, D-Calif., who chairs the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, believes the upcoming elections, where Democrats are favored to win seats, could improve the odds in the Senate of passing a climate bill.

Here is the basic problem with leftists. They want all of their crack-addled ideas to be implemented, but they still expect all of the fruits of a free market.

I know he isn't, stubbornly. So no federal loan. He has a way to generate plenty of revenue. If he foolishly refuses, he should not get any help.

“Fiscal crisis puts global warming on shelf”

...not once ordinary folks start burning all that hyper-inflated fiat money to stay warm.

...and another thing, is it just me or does it look like from that picture of B. “Boxer” that she just took a massive “left hook” to the chin?

The truth is, it snowed in Idaho today, the earliest date of the first snowfall since they began keeping records. Global warming is a lefty hoax intended solely to make Algore fatter, dumber and richer.

No one ever wants to talk about all the royalties the federal and state governments get. I heard Beck say it was something like $2 TRILLION over ten years.

Imagine how many jobs would be created if we went full bore with an energy Independence plan, nuclear power, new refineries, drill, coal to liquids, gas to liquids ... leave all the stupidity behind. Anyone care to tell me why we aren't doing this all of the above?

Think about what it would mean if we could become energy independent, and not send the $700 billion yearly to terror states.

From the article:

"You can't pick an empty pocket," Yvo de Boer, the U.N.'s top climate official, told the Associated Press last week.

That pretty much sums up both the U.N. and climate change.

UN official? I believe that the UN can pick an empty pocket. But it’s still empty and you’ll not get satisfied with what you can pick.

My only guess is A) Environatzies, coupled with B) something in the OPEC agreement that we signed when we joined? I have never seen what is in that, but it bears researching, because this economic crisis, along with the crisis ongoing caused by the price of oil and the steady rise over the last 3 years, could have all been avoided. Not to mention our deficit could be all but balanced! What country, unless suicidal, does such a stupid thing? And more importantly WHY? Global warming is dreamed up and we fall in line? Something very suspicious about a hoax being foisted on Americans that could very well lead to our real demise.

Some causes, like global warming, veganism, and affirmative action, are only possible in a culture wallowing in extreme luxury. Doesn’t take much of a downturn to take those completely off the table.

Wow! Everyone thought it was CO2... turns out it was really 401(k)!!!

LOL! For a while, all the commercials were for 'green' cleaning and home improvement products.

Now I notice how they all talk about "if this isn't a recession, it sure feels like one" or other variations on 'times are tough, you can stretch your money with us.'

The only green any of these companies are really interested in is your money.

Uh ... oops ... according to the official leftist playbook, you're not supposed to ever let the truth out about taxes. This UN idiot just did.

Guess he'll be losing his membership card in the ACLU in the next few weeks.
