Don't Panic about West Virginia (vanity)
vanity | Grady Scott

Posted on 10/12/2008 1:55:51 PM PDT by gbscott1954

Just wanted to post a quick note concerning the voter registration in WV and some more detail. I live in WV, in the northern area where we have our lone Republican representative. Voter registration is about 20% weighted for the dems. But.... you need to know something about WV. While 2/3 of the state is owned locally by dems and our state officials are all dems, it is a different picture in recent years concerning president. I was shocked by this poll that shows Obama ahead by 8 points. I would bet the ranch that is is screwy some way. WV has voted for Clinton twice but republican every other time since Reagan. W carried easily in 2000 and 2004. Combine it with the "Clean Coal" gaffes and I have no doubt but that McCain will win it.

Secondly, If WV is so winnable why hasn't either Obama or Biden been here? Also, neither McCain or Palen have put in an appearance. I will start to get antsy when I see the first time in here. I have also noticed locally that the local dems all have their signs up, but guess what? I have yet to see an Obama sign up, with the exception of the local dem headquarters. WV is pro-life and pro-gun (even or dem congressmen are that way!) and also is the least racially diverse state in the union. I is something like 96% white.

All of this said, is it possible that I am wrong and WV will turn blue? Anything is possible. But if it is then Obama will have well over 350 electoral votes. We are going to bring it home for "Palen/McCain" "Mountaineers are always free!" (state motto)

Good points. Still think McCain should appear in West Virginia. I don’t want any surprises on election day.

I live in the eastern panhandle. I’ve seen quite a few signs for BO but the number of McCain signs is definitely on the rise.

West Virginia voted democrat in every election from 1960-1996, except that it went republican in the republican landslides of 1972 and 1984.

Leaving Wednesday from S.E. Florida to get there in time for
Bridge Day with the family.
It was either that or New Mexico and the balloon launch. We’ll do that next year.
Saturday night will go to Dominicks Chop House in Summersville. The best place in the state.

Why does W.V. keep re-electing Robert Byrd to the U.S. Senate while also being a “red state” at the Presidential level?

The sign thing is very strange this year, everywhere, not just WV!

I recently traveled for about an hour and a half in NW CT, through very rural towns. Most of these towns are full of garden sandwich, free range chicken, snobby elites. They are typically littered, literally, with liberal election signs. Kerry and Gore signs were everywhere!

This trip, though I traveled through 3 or four of these towns, I counted TWO Obama/Biden signs. TWO!!! The yards were full of McCain/Palin and Republicans for Congress signs! I was shocked!! I don't know what it means, but it sure is confusing.

West Virginia is conservative. If anything looks amiss let West Virginians know that Obama is pro-gun control, pro-abortion, pro gay marriage, and in the ACLU’s back pocket.

Joe Biden says “No more coal”
Joe Biden says “No more coal”
Joe Biden says “No more coal”

That should tell the WV voters who the should support.

Of course Obama then filp-flopped during the debate.

Anything to get elected

“Why does W.V. keep re-electing Robert Byrd to the U.S. Senate while also being a “red state” at the Presidential level?”

Not hard to answer, really. Just three words, PORK, PORK, PORK! Sheets Byrd is the champion of pork. Also, he talks the conservative talk back home. The facts speak for themselves. On the national level, WV has been trending conservative on the national level for the past 28 years, with the except of Slickmeister!

West Virginia is a New Deal Democrat state. The voters there love government programs and pork. But they're conservative on school prayer, abortion, homosexuality, gun rights, and they're patriotic toward the military. Dems win nearly all of the state and local elections by fielding candidates who are pro-life & pro-family, but on economic issues are big pork spenders who brag about taxing the millionaires and the corporations.

Congressmen like Mollohan & Rahall fit right in. They're pro-life, pro-gun, pro-traditional marriage, but big spending, earmarking ‘Rats on other issues. Byrd built a rep years ago as a social conservative. He's been more of a mixed bag in recent years on those issues, but recall that he voted for Alito’s confirmation to the Supreme Court. He's brought zillions in pork back to the state over his fifty years in the Senate, so that insulates him against everything.

The other Senator, Jay Rockefeller, is a bit more of a mystery. He's socially liberal, but his billions have enabled him to buy his way to re-election over and over. Plus, he brings back the pork, too.

As the ‘Rat party has drifted further and further into kookiness at the presidential level, the social and military issues have risen to the top in those races, and no presidential candidate can offer enough pork to an individual state to tip it if he's as out of touch with the social values there as Obama is with West Virginians.

A lot of democrats got mugged this year in their primary.

There are 600+ anti-Hillary/pro-McCain/Palin websites.

This is my favorite:

http://noquarterusa.net/blog/

Be sure and read the comments.

Many of them have left the Dem Party, becoming Republicans or Independents and some are voting straight ticket Republican.

Very enlightening.

I don't know what it means

It means, I think, that the polls are the results of creative math.

I don't see as many obama/biden bumperstickers here in my part of Florida, as I saw Kerry/Edwards stickers last time.

Since the media is so in the tank for Obama, I don't think one can believe any thing they say about the election. They see what they want to see, suffering from a massive case of 'group think'.

After what the “O” said about West Virginians? You think they’ve forgotten? ;) If he believes what he said, it’s no wonder he won’t set foot in the state. Evidently, he thought he wouldn’t need their votes? :)

I live in Marion County. There are loads of Obama-Biden UMW sponsored signs in Fairmont. I have had my yard signs in support of McCain-Palin and state and local Republican candidates vandalized twice. I’ll get more tomorrow, and when I can, I am going to buy a banner that I can put up in the trees alongside the road. I was in the Harrison County courthouse Friday, and most of those workers are Democrat - all voting for McCain. If the race is truly close here, the NRA better start running ads right away. I’m with you though, I do not believe the polls. My mother is 85 and hates George Bush. She is voting for McCain because she thinks Obama is too young. My ex is very socially liberal, but values his guns and cares about national security: he’s voting for McCain.

These polls are making me very upset. They’re taking away my happiness and I feel like there’s nothing I can do to stop it. I try to avoid them, but can’t. It just keeps pi$$ing me off.

If WV is smart enough, WTH is up with PA? Don’t they remember Obama saying they cling to guns and bibles. I know Philly is full of corruption, but what about the rest of the state. McCain/Palin should easily get 47-48% of the vote here.

Ya see, if I said that “down home”, I’d get either a “knowing grin” or a chuckle. Guess you’re not a “Hillbilly”.

Therefore, the long answer is that as long as he’s in DC, he’s *not* in WV and does the state far less damage than he did when he was gov, aka “the Peter principle”. ;)

I’ve never been worried about WV, the idea that Fauxbama is up 8 in WV is as silly and laughable as the claims he’s up 15 in PA.

WV is not going Blue this year, take it to the bank.

I’m want you folks to understand something, there is a conscious effort to repress republican turnout this year guys, and that’s what all this nonsensical polling is about. Nothing more, nothing less.

The polls are completely outside reality, not even remotely believable. At least the ones for public consumption. Don’t buy into them.

While WV does elect democrats, it isn’t going to vote for Fauxbama.. its NOT a liberal state, and it surely isn’t a state where done nothing slicksters from Chicago get votes.

WAKE UP!!!

Look, ignore the public polls on PA, they are WRONG, DEAD WRONG.

PA is going McCain this year, take it to the bank, Fauxbama is going to lose PA, and likely at least 1 if not 2 other rust belt states that Kerry got.

The idea he’s up 15 points in PA is laughable. I’m in PA, Fauxbama is spending money like water here, McCain is here, and very active... if he was truly up by 15, do you think EITHER of them would be here?

Don’t buy the polls guys, they are absolutely completely off, and a joke at this point. Kerry got this state by 2.5% of the vote with all of the party and the state machine working hard for him. Fauxbama has none of that, he won’t win PA, let alone win it by 15, that’s just rediculous.

Stop buying into the public polls, they are being used for republican repression tactics at this point they have NOTHING to do with the realities on the ground. Trust me. Stay focused stay upbeat and GOTV! That’s the key, GOTV!!! As long as the republicans show up on election day Fauxbama cannot win, his only calculus for victory is major dejection by republicans who stay home.
