Pair arrested after McCain sign torched in Sellwood
KATU - Portland, Oregon ^ | October 11, 2008 | Margy Lynch

Posted on 10/12/2008 1:03:56 PM PDT by Bell407Pilot

PORTLAND, Ore. - Authorities have arrested two men after a Molotov cocktail was thrown at a 4-foot by 8-foot campaign sign for Republican presidential candidate John McCain in a southeast Portland yard.

Karen Scrutton said she was asleep inside her home at 7956 S.E. 17th Ave. in the Sellwood neighborhood when she saw her sign go up in flames after 1 a.m.

"I screamed upstairs to my husband, 'Jean! Jean!" she said.

A neighbor heard a crash and chased off one of the suspects. Jean Scrutton said his son-in-law found another suspect not far away.

Not long after, investigators picked up Leslie Brockette Leudtke and Kevin Carl Robinson, both 23. After interviewing them, the pair was charged with four counts each of manufacturing and possession of a destructive device. In addition, Leudtke was charged with a single count of reckless burning.

Witnesses said the suspects threw a Molotov cocktail at the sign and used another as a torch.

The Scruttons worried that their home could have caught on fire.

"Our whole house could have burnt down," Karen Scrutton said while thanking her neighbor for intervening.

Despite the ordeal, she said they won't take the sign down. It suffered only minor damage from the fire.

I had posted this earlier but it appears as if it was deleted. If McCain is to be held responsible for the views of people at town hall meetings, then Obama should be held accountable for this act of violence.

Vandalized signs should be left exactly as they are. Decent people will see them and realize the scumbaggery involved, and will be repulsed. That will do more to help the Republican candidates than an unmolested sign ever could.

One thing that puzzles me and, actually, creeps me out is how many of the messiah’s followers are thuggish young white men. They’re the type who otherwise show up as union goons and perform other “useful” services of that nature. But there sure seem to be a lot of them this time around, and I find it very alarming. I don’t think Kerry had that much of a violent following outside of a few university professors, but Obama has dredged up followers like this from the bottom of every barrel he could find.

If there is one thing thuggish young men of every color love, it is the convenience of being able to physically intimidate any young woman who is stupid enough to spend time with them into having an abortion.

They know that Obama stands foursquare between them and the unspeakable atrocity of supporting the children they beget.

You said — “Portland Oregon...they will be treated as heroes.”

Ummm..., that’s not true, and I’m from Portland, OR. I’m not there right now, but have been for many years and there are Republicans and Christians and legislators in the State legislature, plus the US Congress who would all disapprove of that.

That’s pretty much slander, as I see it, of the city and the people who are there who do not do as you say...

In addition to that, you’ll find any number of people in other states and cities who will do exactly the same kind of thing (i.e., vandalism towards political signs).

In one of George Bush’s elections, the state of Oregon was only a few thousand (maybe one or two — can’t remember) away from having the state go his way. So, you can very well see (by that) that there is a sizable group who do not agree with that kind of thing.

I’ve lived in Lake Oswego and in the city of Portland, for a long time. And I’ve worked on election campaigns of Republicans there. People do elect Republicans; there are Republicans in the state legislature and there are Republicans in the Congress. There are many Christians there, too, in the Portland area, as I have associated with many of them.

Looking across the river, I would put Washington state as much more liberal than Oregon. So, I would concentrate on your side of the river, first...

as much as I can understand your desire to defend your hometown....Portland in whacked man. I’ve lived here for 25 years and it’s filled with loonies. We have people defecating on the American Flag in the middle of the street during a “peace protest.” A friend of mine was rearended in a drive-thre (Starbucks no less). The guy who hit her jumped out of his car and started cursing her out for her Bush ‘04 sticker. There is anti-American artwork hanging in the airport. A private business was run out of town because they sold fur. After two years of naked protestors hurling feeces at anyone who walked by the store. The police looked on, ignoring the restraining orders the owners had against the protestors. And don’t even get me started on Critical Mass.........

Oregon had plenty of fine people in it. Portland is a sick city with Marxist leftist running the show. There isn’t a single Republican I can think of in city government. In Portland, these people would be cheered as heroes....maybe not in the rest of the state, but in Multnomah County....heck yeah.

I have an 8x4 McCain/Palin sign hanging from my front porch. It gets lots of visibility and I worry about some dummie yahoo taking matters into his own hands.

Suprisingly, my 3 yard signs (I live on a corner) have been unmolested for weeks, which is not what happened last election. My Bush/Cheney signs we vandalized and stolen with regularity.

Luckily, I’m a light sleeper and I keep my new Taurus Judge handy at night.

You should know that there are three counties that make up the Portland metro area. Furthermore, you should also know that “cities” across the country have higher proportion of liberals than other areas. So, you should be making comparisons — city to city and see how that works out.

And even with cities (in general) having higher proportions of liberals (across this country), there are plenty of good people in those cities who don’t see it the same way as those liberals. They are there and they also provide the “offset” and the balance to the situation. It’s the same in Portland, too.

I’ve seen a lot of protests around here. Many times, they are small groups that congregate in the Park Blocks over by Portland State University. It’s no big deal. They may get press, but they do not really make up any kind of significant group. Most people around here (in fact a *very large majority*) do *not* participate in these peace marches or whatever.

Talk about Critical Mass — it’s not the big deal it is elsewhere in the country. The Police Department make it out to be a parade. It’s no more inconvenient to anyone, anymore than a parade through the town, and there are lots of parades of one kind or another (and honest-to-goodness ones with kids and/or adults for good things, too).

So, big deal! — about Critical Mass — no one cares about it in Portland, because, basically, Portland is considered the bike capital of the U.S. anyway and everyone is pretty familiar with bikes and bikers. I think one time my cousin and I got in on a Critical Mass bike ride, complete with police escort and them blocking off the streets, just like a parade. No one cares and many people just wave when you go by... LOL...

Talking about Starbucks, there are certain groups (but they are not mainstream, to be sure) — who think that “corporate entities” (like Starbucks) shouldn’t be running out other businesses in neighborhood areas. I remember there was a new Starbucks that was going in at around 20th and Division. It was actually “firebombed”. They just fixed it up and it opened up and it hasn’t had any problems from then on.

You’ve got some radicals around, but they are all over this country. It’s not “mainstream” in Portland, but there are some who live there.

I can’t say anything about the fur incident, since I don’t know anything about it.

BUT, here’s what a lot of people should know about Portland, in that it’s a great “family town” with a lot of family activities (and they are family oriented, too). It’s a great “walking town” in the downtown area, and there are lots of people around, lots of activities (and into the evening) and the downtown doesn’t shut down and blow away like a ghost town at night. Families and couples walk around the downtown area with all sorts of activities going on and never worry about a thing.

That says a lot, there...

There’s a lot more, but I’ll stop with just a few things.

You said — “Oh pleeease! Slander?! Get real, Portland IS a hot bed of liberal thinking. Been there, seen it!”

It’s no more than any other metro area in the U.S. and in fact, it’s a lot *better* than many other metro areas in the country — especially in the downtown section, where people can walk around freely, and into the evenings, with lots of activities and family type events and not be fearful about your safety.

There are a lot of other city downtown areas where I would never do that. Portland is great for that and has a lot of things going on.

And furthermore, since there are liberals there (just like there are in other cities and metro areas in the country) — people there just go about their business and it’s (more or less) a “live and let live” attitude and environment.

The liberals can do a few things that they want to do (parade around, march and have a few protests in the park and so on — and no one else cares what they do... LOL...) and others do their thing and get along just fine, with everyone else. That’s what I’ve seen, on an every-day level - day-in and day-out — being there.

Ok..now THAT WAS uncalled for.

I understand his anger and exasperation over this situation, and his frustration at wanting to ‘fight back’.

Saying someone might have ‘muslim blood’ as a dig about his family, because he is venting that frustration, doesn’t reflect well on you.

First of all. He’s been here since 2001. Secondly, he’s a veteran and probably knows a little more than both of us about ‘fighting the enemy’.

And you’ve been here since 1999 and still don’t know how to check as persons ‘profile’ before posting.

I just got through reading another posted article here on Free Republic, about a Christian teacher in Africa, being beat to death by her Muslim “religion of peace” students.

Now, if someone takes a political prank and vandalism and wants bodily harm to come to someone — that’s just as evil as the evil religion of Islam. Hold them accountable under the law. But the law does not countenance that sort of behavior (in terms of that kind of “retribution”) no matter who the political candidate is.

That’s not what our country is based upon — even if a lot of people do go around talking like that at times.

I have pointed out, very well, that this sort of thing (and comment) is just like the Muslims — who do have an extremely evil religion. We shouldn’t be copying them.

Furthermore, I don’t look at how long someone is here when I say something or answer. I just answer on the basis of the words and the comments, themselves. Everyone gets the same thing from me....

I also just got through listening to a bunch of Democrats talking about the *fraud* committed by Obama (in his campaign and against Hillary), and if they can state those kinds of things, about illegal activities and do it in a rational way (even though they are acted against in reprehensible ways, by Obama’s group) — so can Republicans.
