Michael Douglas asked about Wall Street crisis
Associated Press ^ | September 24, 2008 | AP

UNITED NATIONS - Michael Douglas had to field questions Wednesday about the financial turmoil shaking world markets from reporters recalling his role in the 1987 film "Wall Street." The actor sought to focus on the subject of Wednesday's news conference — urging the United States and eight other holdout nations to ratify a nuclear test ban treaty. Douglas won an Academy Award for portraying the rapacious banker Gordon Gekko, who popularized the phrase "greed is good" in the movie. After world leaders here condemned the "boundless greed" of world markets, Douglas was asked to compare nuclear Armageddon with the "financial Armageddon on Wall Street." But the likening to Gekko did not end there, with a reporter asking: "Are you saying Gordon that greed is not good?" "I'm not saying that," Douglas replied. "And my name is not Gordon. He's a character I played 20 years ago." Douglas, who married actress Catherine Zeta-Jones in 2000, has won two Oscars — as a producer for 1975's "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and as best actor for his role in "Wall Street."

Makes about as much sense as people trusting democrats and Hillary on health care.

Her experience being an unelected first lady writing legislation to Socialize health care in the United States in secret meetings, which led to the first Republican House of Representatives in 40 years.

America, land of the celebutard.

Well I can recall not long ago when you got into trouble around here for suggesting that maybe friggin' actor Ahnuld Schwarzen-Kennedy wasn't up to the job of CA Governor. Now he's the Governator and he's soooooo useless!

After world leaders here condemned the "boundless greed" of world markets,

You want "boundless," I'll give you government, and its unending need to suck the blood of taxpayers.

The days of Jesse Helms and withheld UN payments seem like a century ago.

This certainly fleshes out all the more the fact that the press really doesn’t have much of a grasp on reality. No wonder they idolize actors celebrated and rewarded by leftists, and hate responsible government officials on the right.

“The actor sought to focus on the subject of Wednesday’s news conference — urging the United States and eight other holdout nations to ratify a nuclear test ban treaty.”

It was a case of the press being stupid not Mr. Douglas. But yes, the U.N. is useless.

Well, a so-called reporter did call him Gordon. If that’s the calibre of reporter that covers the U.N., is it any wonder the world listens to celebrities’ opinions?

Geez louise. So when we want medical advice, should we talk to George Clooney, since he used to be a doctor on “ER”???? I can’t believe that somebody considers Michael Douglas an authority on the Wall Street problems because he was in a movie about stock brokers. It’s absolutely unbelievable.

Greed and stupidity are constant. The key variable in this situation was government policy, which changed to require banks to act contrary to their fiduciary responsibility.

An actor who was raised in Bermuda and California but who happened to play a Boeskyesque tycoon in an old movie (old enough to use brick cell phones) being asked about finance only shows how most of our media obviously rode the small bus to school.

Well in fairness to the reporters, Douglas was there to get countries to agree on a Nuclear test ban. I would say Douglas knows as much about Wall St. as he does about nuclear testing and foreign policy.

Compared to George Clooney, however, Michael Douglas is JP Morgan, Edward Teller, and Henry Kissinger all rolled into one.

Michael Douglas? WTF does he know about finance?

The UN’s best and brightest. There is something mentally wrong with a politician who queries an actor on financial issues just for performing a role. This guy needs psychiatric help. We should book him an appointment with Dr. Frasier Crane, since Robert Hartley is no longer available.
