Despite an enthusiastic reception on Saturday in this small Pennsylvania town, Gov. Sarah Palin dialed back the attacks on Senator Barack Obama that have typified her public appearances of late, a day after her running mate described Mr. Obama as a decent man.
The name of William Ayers, the 1960s radical that the McCain campaign has tried to tie to its opponent, was not spoken once by the Alaska governor, a stark contrast to a series of increasingly vituperative attacks related to Mr. Ayers that she delivered at private fund-raisers and large-scale rallies in the past week.
Ms. Palin was by no means light on the Democratic candidate, but she shifted the focus of her attacks to Mr. Obamas voting record on abortion, saying that he hopes you wont notice how radical his ideas are on this until its too late.
Let there be no misunderstanding about the stakes, she said to a cheering crowd. A vote for Barack Obama is a vote for activist courts that will continue to smother the open and democratic debate that we deserve and need on this issue of life.
It was a shift for the governor, who, in three fund-raisers on Friday, tried to raise questions about Mr. Obamas personality and patriotism, charging that he had chosen ambition over country and started his political career in the living room of an unrepentant terrorist. That language was gone from Saturdays speech.

Obama supporters sure are keeping it classy.
Toning it down is only meant for republicans. Thems the rules.
“Senator, some of your critics call you aloof and elitist — why do you always seem to be putting on airs?”
(O.K., it's just a stupid pun, and I don't really think it'd accomplish anything — but, wouldn't it be fun to watch if Obama took the bait and got all “offended”; which he does so well?)
Hot Air has an article that says that there are disagreements between Palin and McCain about how hard to hit Barack. It even suggests that a guy named Slater who is in charge of the campaign wants to insure that McCain loses with dignity.... Is that Allahpundit source worth worrying about.
PS What really worries me is how sparsely populated FR is right now.
Longtime lurker but FR is my sanity.
Once again the left has won with accusing the Republicans of doing the same thing they get away with. A democrat in a purple shirt could cry foul that a Republican wore a purple shirt and the Republican would go change their shirt. I’m tired of it! Where’s the stones we’ve lacked since at least 2004? Well, I can look forward to 2012 now that McCain is hushing his supporters (see video) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llef8ZRTWQo&NR=1 and Palin is caving in. I do, however, love how she just goes after something else instead of endorsing Obama as McCain seems to have done.
there is a chance (and only a chance)that its all part of a strategy:
right before they get down to the serious business of knocking Obama outa the ring, they hold back a bit
Palin may not have brought up Ayers but the Times sure did....LOL! As long as it is brought up by someone, especially one of the MSM then word gets out and curiousity is piqued. In any case, the Ayers Acorn ad is still going on you tube.
Hopefully next week it will be Odinga.
Ayers ad is still running in Minnesota today.
Why don’t they MENTION! Rezco, and the Communist leader of Kenya who has a deal with BO.
I pray Sarah can survive to fight another day - we need her and her type to lead us out of the coming socialism.
Word of advice to McCain: do NOT attempt to hold back Sarah. You did it once with those foolish interviews.
Word of advice to Sarah: Sarah, be yourself. You didn't get where you are now by playing nicey nice.
Thanks. I posted that now.
It’s too bad the Marxist potheads and Commie dopers in Obama Nation won’t “temper” their attacks on the Palin family, especially Trig and Bristol Palin. The Commies at the NYT can shove it!
Do you believe that story? Is there a FReeper who knows something about the hierarchy of McCain’s campaign....?
McCain must have some internal polling that persuaded him that Ayers was either having no impact, or was hurting him. That’s really not a reason to drop Obama’s associations from the discussion. Right now, a lot of undecideds and moderates may tell a pollster that they don’t like negative attacks (’cause that’s what they’re expected to say), and they may be buying into the Obama and MSM “act of desperation” spin, but if you stay with it, repetition will cause some people to look at the connections. If repetition works for the “Big Lies” of this world, surely it can help to promote an even “bigger” truth.
I don’t think he has given up at all, we will see if what he does is effective.

In fighting liberals, mccain seems to have decided to take a knife to the gun fight. I’ll vote for PALIN/mccain but losing hope and can only pray we can survive the coming apocolypse in Amerika.
I watched Palin’s speech in PA today on C-Span. She utterly eviscerated Obama on the abortion issue. She even mentioned the dreaded “infanticide” word.
Rev Wright ads 24/7 wins the election for McPalin in a landlside.
Not by her choice I suspect, but another way to report this is: "How a political party commits suicide."
I hope Gov. Palin ignores these Chamberlains and goes back on the attack.
"Old" accusation? Talk about silly and gratuitous characterization: Governor Palin has been on the ticket just over one month. Nothing that she says could be considered an "old" accusation except in the cloud-cuckoo land of the New York Times.
The New York Times has certainly sullied what little was left of its reputation in this race; even what should be a simple report explicitly editorializes --- look at the bottom, which even goes so far as to print as straight news a press release from the Obama camp. Why, just for the sake of fairness, won't they do exactly the same favor for the McCain campaign? Just run as straight news the same type of memo, such as the one here, which ends with:
First, Barack Obama has to be forthright about his relationship with ACORN. Secondly, given their willingness to compromise the voting process in key battleground states across the country, a thorough investigation of ACORN must be conducted before Election Day. Finally, federal funding of ACORN must cease immediately until the full examination has been completed. American taxpayers should not be funding an organization mired in potentially illegal activities.
It's over. Friday, McCain endorse Obama by replying to an angry supporter saying (paraphrased) that he knew Obama, Obama is a decent person and would make a fine president followed by booing from the crowd (not at Obama, but at McCain).
