Somali pirates attack two more ships in Indian Ocean
Telegraph UK ^ | 11 Oct 2008

Posted on 10/11/2008 8:22:26 PM PDT by nuconvert

The piracy crisis that threatens to cripple vital shipping lines through the Indian Ocean has claimed fresh victims as Somali bandits attacked two more ships.

11 Oct 2008

Gun-toting buccaneers were reported to have stormed a chemical tanker in the Gulf of Aden off Somalia's northern coast, while another group tried to seize a United Nations World Food Programme ship off the coast of the Somali capital, Mogadishu.

The attacks, disclosed by the International Maritime Bureau's Piracy Reporting Centre, bring the number of hijacks and attempted hijacks off the Somali coast to 69 this year alone.

They came as American warships remain in an armed standoff with pirates who captured the MV Faina, a Ukrainian boat carrying tanks and weapons that was hijacked en route to Kenya on September 25.

The pirate gang's self-styled leader, Sugule Adi, issued an extraordinary threat to blow the ship up and his own men along with it unless they were paid the $20m (£12m) ransom that they have demanded for the 21-strong crew's release.

Speaking to a news agency via a satellite phone, Mr Adi vowed the threat would be carried out by Monday night.

"We held a consultative meeting for more than three hours and decided to blow up the ship and its cargo - us included - if the ship owners did not meet our ransom demand," he said.

We were assured NATO ships would take cae of the pirates. Are they even in the area yet?

Why can’t we just go and sink em? We have ships in the area.

Someone’s navy should go along the coast of Somalia and sink every single ship, rowboat and dinghy. Rubber duckys should have holes in them.

Have each legitimate vessal use a transponder to identify it as a friend. If it doesn't respond, sink it.

That's the last defense. Use the PAC-3 missile first. It doesn't even carry a warhead. Just kinetic force against a missile. Dead-on accurate on incoming. And about 2/3 the speed of a round.

Aim those 60mm rounds at anything approaching your warship for fun and pleasure. The Captain will say it's a "training exercise" for blowing off that much ammo.

WHEN will our Navy be allowed to sweep an idiotically small part of the indian ocean for pirates? They have mother ships from which their assault boats operate.
They have shore bases that ache for an airstrike.

Do we truly have a navy now that is absolutely never allowed to sink a ships that prey upon merchantmen?

If we refuse to attack we should just sail away somewhere where at least we dont have to be humiliated.

Because piracy is a menace to free commerce,, the ORIGINAL national interest,, IE ,,,, to the shores of Tripoli,,,,

Review why we were in Tripoli in the first place. Our founders had no issues whatsoever with attacking Pirates.

Millions for defense,,, not a cent for tribute.
And yes,, back then the Europeans were angry at the fledgling USA for not just accepting tribute payments as a business cost.

You'd think the insurance firms would require it.

Could be a maritime security business out there waiting for a startup.

Nah....It would make commercial ports around the world nervous.
But, they are removable!
So, they could stow them before entering port areas.

Pirates. Sounds as believable as scurvy. I thought a Russian frigate was on the way. What, are they powering it with oars? They should be there already and exercise some of that good ol’ Stalinist diplomacy on the pirates. And what are the US ships doing there? Observing? And who would want to send any commercial ship within a couple hundred miles of Somalia nowadays?

Incredible.

Why aren’t they convoying ships under US Navy protection through the area?

From the Anglo-Dutch Wars, through the Franco-British Wars of the 1700's, the American Revolution, the French Revolutionary Wars, the Napoleonic Wars, the World Wars, the answer is always the same: merchant ship captains hate convoys.

You can't leave port when your ship is ready, you have to wait for the convoy to form up. You can't travel at your best speed, you have to travel at the speed of the slowest ship in the convoy. You can't go where you want, you have to go where the convoy's going. In sum, it screws up the economics.

The only upside to a convoy is you are less likely to get captured. In peacetime (or the transition from peacetime to wartime) that risk isn't always apparent. Hey, it's just unlucky captains that get caught by pirates, there's nothing wrong with your luck...

Crews are expendable, and ships are write-offs.

Arms in most ports are illegal no matter where the vessel travels from.
No company can afford a gunship with every transport. $$$

Because the merchant ships are unarmed.

A pirate mother ship locates the target by radar and sends off a couple of small speed boats loaded with guys, AKs and RPGs.

The small boats come up from behind, throw up some hooks, climb aboard and take the ships. They don't get everyone they go for. Some the sides are too tall and others fight them off with fire hoses.

I'd say its time for a few Q Boats.
