Crossing Over: As the U.S. Economy Sputters, Working-Class Women Shift to Obama
Wall Street Journal ^ | October 11, 2008 | Jonathan Kaufman

Posted on 10/11/2008 8:04:47 AM PDT by reaganaut1

KOKOMO, Ind. -- Last month, in this once-sturdy auto town of 60,000, two white women sounded off at a union hall when talk turned to politics.

"I feel like a white female or a white male has fewer opportunities than the black man or the black woman because of all the special treatment and special programs they have gotten," said Marla Hightower. "If Obama is elected, what's going to happen?"

"That is just stupid," Ginny McMillin, the head of her local, shot back. "People are saying 'we don't want a black man.' Shame on America for thinking that!"

The exchange was emblematic of the sharp divide among white, working-class female voters -- a key voting bloc that has largely rejected Barack Obama as a presidential candidate. But four weeks and a $700 billion financial-bailout package later, some attitudes are shifting. Sen. Obama is now picking up support from some of the very women who until recently disdained him. As U.S. economic concerns intensify, ranks of blue-collar females are reconsidering everything from Sen. Obama's policies to their comfort level with his race.

Working-class women, generally defined as those in blue-collar and service jobs earning less than $50,000 a year -- comprise almost a quarter of American voters. Sen. Obama trailed Sen. John McCain by 12 points among these women just two weeks ago, but has since closed the gap. According to a Wall Street Journal poll conducted the weekend of Oct. 4, the two senators are now running even, with 45% of such voters giving each candidate the nod. The reversal is one of the main reasons Sen. Obama is gaining ground in swing states like Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Indiana -- all of which have large rural and blue-collar populations.

McCain needs to convince voters he will deal better with the economy. Talking about Ayers and ACORN is necessary but not sufficient.

McCain - needs to expose BO for what he is ENOUGH of this crap about how great he is from McLame! I fully expect McLame to enforce BO policies of taking away our guns, eliminating free speech and silencing conservatives. I sometimes wonder if McLame is working for the rats - scarry how poorly he is running his campaign.

Please freepers be prepared - you may not need it but we still have the 2nd amendment - after this election you may never have the right to defend yourself or your freedom. A liberal congress and a Marxist president will destroy the constitution. Hope for the best and pray but definitely plan for the worst.

This is such terrible piece. They go from union members to all white females suggesting that the union members are representative of white females in the U.S. It's a piece written in a union town.

How is talking about Ayers going to address economic issues? Yes talk about Ayers, but also give people a reason to vote for him.

McCain needs to address the economic concerns by talking about cutting taxes on income and business taxes and elimination of the payroll tax.

More liberal tripe from the MSM designed to influence opinion. In this case it’s designed to make working class females think its ok to vote for the Marxist Obama because others are. Never mind the polls over sample Democrats to get these results.

Does it surprise anyone that more people think Sarah Palin is not qualified to be President when the press has spent a month talking only to her critics and claiming that she's unqualified and spending no time talking about her accomplishments (gas pipeline, ethics, spending cutting, etc.)?

McCain needs to convince voters he will deal better with the economy.

McCain lost this election by signing the bail out bill. If he wanted us to see what a maverick he really is, he should have handed out indictments...not his signature.

It is the failure of the GOP to stand up against socialist legislation brought about by the democRATs that is causing the market around the world to plumment. America is the only place where capitalism has a chance, if it doesn't exist here, the market confidence around the world goes with it.

If these white women are going for Obama because of what's happening in the stock market, there a bunch of ding bat air heads.

As the U.S. Economy Sputters, Working-Class Women Shift to Obama

Too bad these working class women do not understand that the economy is sputtering directly because of Obama's socialist leaning and policies. It is too bad that they cannot connect the dots; the Democrats sabotaged our economy and then blamed the Republicans. Thanks to our dumbed down schools, no one can see that. They probably will not see that even after Obama wins the election. Ignorance is abundant among these voters; the Dems want it that way.

A better headline would be

“As Economy sputters, Drive By Media outlets increase layoffs, causing media to support Obama.”

“...David Gregory, NBC News Urinalist, said ‘I thought McCain was the man for the job. I was a McCain Man. But then our ratings went down, folks started getting laid off. I was looking for hope and change at that point. Me and many of my co-urinalists decide we would just come out and cheerlead the Obama campaign. He’s such a sharp looking, well spoken guy.’” /sarc

As I posted earlier, they are trying to shame voters into voting for Obama.

The Obama-Ayers strategy is to keep beating up whites over this alledged racism and terrorist branding so that they will vote for Obama to clear their conscience. How many idiots are going to fall for this?

I am proud to say that I have several students (8th graders) who support McCain, and in class discussions, they want to argue the plans and issues. Very few of the Obama student supporters can argue the issues. They say he is “cool”. The “Republican” supporters want evidence of his policy, not his “cool factor”.
For added information, I act as devil’s advocate and facilitator. I do not share my beliefs. I ask that they become educated on the candidate and their record and not base their opinion on media spin and campaign advertising.

“As Economy sputters, Drive By Media outlets increase layoffs, causing media to support Obama.”

This is a 100% Media election - they think they run the show still and we shall see on Nov 5 if that is true or not. There is no way without the bais of the DNC Media that a man of this character and lack of accomplishments would even be on the ticket. HE IS A MEDIA MADE MAN. When do we get to see who is pulling the strings? IMHO King Maker George Soros is the man behind wanting to remake America and he is not bashful about those goals. He does go underground when it comes to BUYING THE WHITE HOUSE AS HE TRIED UNSUCESSFULLY IN 2004 WITH HIS VIET NAM VETEREN JFK. One would think he would evaluate how great of a deal that turned out to be - spending millions and then loosing. But if you are Soros or a DEM you didn't loose - Rove stole the election by 'fixing' the Diebold machines. GET READY FOR SOME MORE OF THIS CRAP (and this time around maybe some street shenanigans).

I think the word Socialism needs to be brought up clearly and repeatedly in conversations about Obama and the results of his potential presidency. There is no doubt in my mind that there will be a push to nationalize not only the health care and financial industries but utilities and certain manufacturing plants. The Chavez wanna bes will also push for nationalization of companies involved in the exploration, development, digging, processing and sale of coal, natural gas, geothermal, oil, shale and other energy related businesses.

It may be hard explaining to people who think the Federal Government has a magic money sack why Socialism is a very bad idea but it needs to be a major talking point of this campaign.

May they live long lives of brutal servitude paying for the handouts, more free houses and other reparations their new president will be handing out.

If they live long enough they can someday tell their grandchildren what a wonderful place America was before stupid twits like them voted to turn it over to a black socialist so others wouldn't think they were racist.

People are attracted to one lie Obama keeps on repeating — that his tax plan will only affect those earning $250,000 and above — the rest will get a tax cut.

Unless McCain can explain IN SIMPLE TERMS,why this policy is a prescription for disaster ( i.e. Wealth redistribution that is not only class warfare but destroys small businesses that actually HIRE most of our workers ), he’s not going to get any traction.

The past week, he keeps harping about Ayers as if people cared about it. THEY DON’T.

IT’s THE ECONOMY AGAIN STUPID.

Totally agree. While it is important for the Ayers and Acorn stories to stay on the fore, FReepers need to realize that most people who are not conservatives or core republicans (there is a difference ....) are really not being swayed by those arguments. They serve to whip up the base, but the average independent is not going to go vote for McCain because Obama was pals with Ayers. Now, I know there will be some who will say that 'all my friends are angry about Ayers,' but honestly ....chances are your friends are more or less like you.

McCain needs to have Sarah hammer out the Ayers/Acorn issues, but McCain himself needs to come out strong and talk about how he will tackle (or better yet, solve) the economic issues. That is the key thing right now. It is not Ayers, not Acorn, not some young lady Obama allegedly f'd, it is not Odinga (it was hilarious reading some articles where the people writing them had even used the wrong spellings), it is not Hamas/ Chavez/ Castro supporting Obama. All of those things are icing ....but the CAKE is the economy.

If McCain messes up on that, or he gives a poorly delivered version of what Obama is saying (to be honest, for the most part McCain's solutions and Obama's are so close that most voters will not note any real difference), then he will lose. FReepers need to realize that there are core issues, and that there are peripheral issues, and no matter how big the peripheral issues may be (e.g. the Acorn thing is MAJOR ....criminal all the way) that the election will be decided on the core issue (for Bush it was terrorism, this time around it is the economy).

Also people need to remember one name: Bill Clinton! Remember when there was a feeding frenzy about him, when the Lewinsky thing was burning up like a tub of hot tar on his head .....yet his approval ratings AMONG WOMEN went up!

Scandals have a funny way of wiggling left when people expect them to wiggle right! Sometimes they act like we want them to, sometimes they just decide to act the fool. At times they simply play possum ....and in this case that means coming to the fore when Obama is elected. You can be certain that if/when Obama is elected, THEN the media will jump all over the stories of Acorn and the young lass ....but only after the elections. That will be too late.

FReepers need to realize that the things that move VOTERS IN GENERAL are not the same that move FReepers. People honestly do not freaking care! That is harsh, but that is true.

Even in the Republican party that is the same thing! Case in point ....during the race for the Republican nominee, many people here had their pet horses. This guy, or that guy, or that other guy. Well, almost NO ONE had McCain as their choice. Look at the polls on FR back then. McCain was a non-entity ....yet he is NOW the candidate for the Republican party.

That says that we on FR are even at the fringe of our own party. As Conservatives we believe in a number of things (e.g. small government, fiscal responsibility, inalienable rights) that are being eroded not just out of the general consciousness but also from the party that is supposed to represent us. Which should make people think ....will something that will work for FreeRepublic necessarily work for an Independent if it is not even that effective on the average Republican?

Anyways, the ISSUE is the ECONOMY. Everything else is great and sweet, but the issue is the economy. Even if McCain hits every other note, even if he talks about Ayers and Acorn and young black women working in campaigns, even if he puts up posters on Odinga and Kenya (as if people really care about that ....two months ago a FReeper was telling me the entire continent of Africa was beetle dung), even if McCain says that Chavez/Castro like Obama .....even if McCain does all that 24/7, and does NOT delve into the ECONOMY, then he is toast! Dead in the water.

This thing will boil down on the economy, and while it is great to bring Odinga and Ayers into this, the average American will not make his decision on some African prime-minister whose supporters caused some chaos that killed a thousand AFRICANS (makes it even less likely anyone will care ...in the time it took me to write that more children than that just died of Malaria and other preventable diseases in Africa), or because the Democrat party nominee was allegedly running around his wife's back (apparently it is a badge of honor in the Dem party). Sure, it will make Conservatives (even the odd conservative with a small 'c'), and core Republicans fired up ....but it will fizzle and ebb among the general populace.

McCain needs to frame the election around himself, what he can deliver, and his very strong capabilities. He needs to frame it around what he can do to help the nation overcome its economic difficulties. He needs to frame it around his experience and amazing track record. BECAUSE (and forgive me for putting this in all caps), IF HE FRAMES IT AROUND OBAMA AND HOW OBAMA LIKES AFRICAN PRIME-MINISTERS, YOUNG WOMEN, THAT HE NEVER WROTE HIS 'MEMOIRS,' HAS NO BIRTH CERTIFICATE, ETC ETC ETC, THEN MCCAIN WILL LOSE! It is that simple. I am not saying (to reiterate) that Ayers and Acorn and Odinga are non-starters ....what I am saying is that with 3 weeks to the elections, and with the economy at the fore-front, they MAY AS WELL BE non-starters.

McCain needs to frame this around himself and his ability to bring about solutions, and then have Ms Palin be HERSELF (let her lose) as well as having her really hammer Obama on the 'icing' stuff (e.g. Acorn and Ayers). Focus is needed. There are only 3 weeks left. Even the birth-certificate spiel people are bringing up (I see yet another thread on that got locked) is just a mirage ....Obama's people can tie that whole thing up in courts for months, let alone THREE WEEKS! Same thing with Ayers, same thing with Odinga (even if people did care, which they don't outside political circles), same thing with Acorn (big potential time bomb, but can be tied up easily using legalities until the election is over). Those issues need to be hammered out, but FReepers need to realize that McCain will not win because of them. Castro could print Obama's name on all the cigars in Cuba, and the average American would not even care.

The issue is the economy. McCain should focus on that, and then let Sarah lose to be herself (no handlers ...goodness, the lady has been running a state larger than most countries in the WORLD!!!!!!!!!)

It is frustrating to see McCain lose focus, and just as frustrating to see FReepers say how McCain should go and talk about Odinga or about birth certificates when the most that will do is just take time away from McCain that he could be using to expound on the economy. Sarah is there, she is ridiculously competent (her potential is actually greater than McCain's), and she can thump Obama easy.

McCain has only 3 weeks.
