Obama's Primetime Buy Comes at Bargain Price
Washington Post ^ | Oct. 10, 2008 | Lisa deMoraes

Barack Obama's presidential campaign is getting a bargain for the half-hour of Oct. 29 primetime it's bought on CBS and NBC.

The Democratic presidential candidate's camp is paying under $1 million to each network to run the programming it will produce for the first half-hour of primetime that Wednesday night, less than a week before the election. This is considerably less than the networks would otherwise get for the 10-11 ad "units" they run during that half hour, between 8 and 8:30 p.m.

Obama is not getting a price break; the campaign will be charged what's called the "lowest unit cost," in compliance with federal law.

There must be a federal law that says that Barack Obama must not be charged more for 30 minutes, than other advertisers get charged for 30 seconds...

McCain certainly should buy 30 min. on Oct. 30 at those same bargain prices...but he should let Sarah Palin give the speech. God love him...he’s a snoozer.

How much does the networks get for spots during a 30 minute sitcom? Anything over that amount represents a donation in kind to Obama’s campaign and should be reported as such.

This is ridiculous. How can the networks be considered anything but shills.

"Im sure McCain has 3 million...he should do the same...."

If he doesn't, he will doubtlessly lose. Since it's that cheap, McCain should do all 4 networks(CBS,NBC,ABC, and FOX). Of course they will probably charge McCain 20 million per spot.

Astonishing that the networks didn’t pay Obama for the privilege.

I agree that he’s a snoozer - I didn’t even watch his debate but I watch Sarah every chance I get.

Truth be told, I’m voting for Sarah.

If it is shown in Missouri, does Barry go to jail for lying about himself? I’m sure Delaware AG Biden would fight to make sure McCain gets the same deal for TV show time featuring Larry Sinclair.

I think McCain should buy air time for SEAN HANNITY to present the Obama Associations show, that would be better than Mac trying to explain it!

Looks like average rates for a 30 SECOND ad during primetime is $300,000 to $600,000.

Obama is surely getting a bargain.

The networks said that McCain can buy at the same price as Obama. Of course he would have to find a suitable time, preferably not stacked up against some high-rated show or football game.

And Obama has a LOT more money than McCain. Crooked bundlers, liberal billionaires, George Soros, Foreign money, you name it.

Finally, he gave a great speech at the convention, but he can’t do that one again. He’s just not a great speaker. And he can’t very well send Sarah against Obama, that would be a confession of his own weakness.

So, what to do? Maybe hope that Obama goes over the top like he did in Berlin, and turns people off?

Charging Obama was probably a formality. They would hae given him, primetime spots for free. Even the test pattern would probably draw more viewers than the shows they have.

Like I said months ago, the media went all in and McCain is still deciding on his final bet or waiting for his last card. It would be nice if he at least appeared he wanted to win.

I don't think so. 30 minutes talking directly to the people unfiltered by the press would be devastating to the other candidate if gone unanswered by the other campaign in a close race. McCain MUST answer this with equivalent air time of his own if he wants to win.

Could we all agree that Obama’s teleprompter flips out, and he has to wing it? Let’s all agree he can’t remember what the written speech says, and see if he can do as well as Palin did when her teleprompter didn’t work right at RNC.

Wonder what they would charge McCain? They would, by law, have to charge McCain the same amount. As to FOX (the entertainment network), they have stated that Osammie can NOT have that time slot because that would fall into their time slot for a World Series game.

After Obama, though. so Palin has the last word. Let one be a well producd propaganda piece about Palin. The core of that already exists, narrated by Boo Radley. Then maybe a tag team with Palin speaking first followed by McCain 15-15. I don't think anyone wants to listen to McCain for a full 30 min. Maybe a third explaining who and what Obama really is and isn't. The important thing is to get in the last word.

Putting in Palin in venues too small to accommodate those who want to see her may tick some people off enough not to vote as well. Nothing is perfect. But at this ate date, I think most people just ignore the 30 second ads a just so much clutter.

I think 15 minutes would suffice. He should be sitting in a comfortable chair in a professional like setting and just talk to the people. He should start by acknowledging the anger and fear people are feeling and then lay out his plan for rebuilding the economy.

1. Working with borrower and lenders to renegotiate troubled mortgages to 30 year fixed mortgages at 5.25% interest, and offering borrowers the opportunity to insure other mortgages in an FHA like program that borrowers can buy into for a per mortgage fee.

2. Change the rules for IRA/401Ks to allow participants to save any amount they want with the same tax benefit as the present program. Repeal the requirement that at age 70 and half you must begin removing your assets. Allow for emergency withdraws with no penalty at the normal tax rates for the participant.

3. Lower capital gain taxes to 0% for anyone making less than $250,000 and 15% for those above. Lower Corporate taxes to a level equal to those of other low tax countries.

4. Retain the Bush tax cuts and repeal the death tax.

5. And explain the he will pay for these tax cuts by cutting government spending, cutting unnecessary government regulations and sunsetting government programs that are no longer needed.

He should then finish by making a statement that if elected he will empower his Attorney General/DOJ to find and punish all those responsible for the present financial crisis. He should follow that with a statement similar to the one Sarah made at the debate about cutting our reliance on government, re-instilling a national sense of self restraint, self reliance and a rekindling of the spirit of community. And then wrap it up by asking not only for our vote, but also that we send a conservative, Republican Senate and House to DC to help make those promises reality.

If the people still vote for a socialist then we no where we stand in this country.

I agree. 0bama is in danger of oversaturating and turning people off. He already has his own satellite channel. (The fact that a little prompt on the TV screen prompts you directly to the 0 channel is creepy and intrusive.)

Frankly, I don't know how many people would tune in to 30-60 minutes of any politician's drivel. Short, meaty spots during shows people watch would be much more effective. 0bama throwing big money around is no way to convince people he's one of them. This will backfire.

I'd be curious to know how many hits he's gotten on his Dish network channel and how long people stay tuned to it.

Yes, the networks said McCain would get the same price, assuming he can find a good spot. These things do fill up.

If he decided on a 15-minute time slot, that would be another question. What would the networks run on the other 15 minutes? Half a show? Six flaming liberals tearing McCain’s speech apart?

I think he would almost HAVE to take half an hour, and maybe give 10 or 15 minutes to Sarah Palin.

Unless he takes half an hour, the price would probably not be half what Obama paid, because of the obvious complications.

I like that idea. Half an hour, as the John & Sarah show. It works great at rallies, why not on TV? In fact, maybe they could schedule a rally on prime time TV, with a live audience filtered for trolls. So far that is where they have both done best.
