The Golden State, which recently scrambled to fill a $15 billion budget gap, still may not be able to meet its payroll without help.
California is going to Washington, D.C., to ask for $7 billion to cover its budget shortfall. Otherwise it won't be able to pay for its teachers, cops, firemen, and other essential services. Unfortunately, California won't be alone. A number of other states are experiencing a huge dive in tax revenue and could be going cap in hand to Uncle Sam alarmingly soon. How bad could it get? The potential cost for all the 31 states facing both major and minor shortfalls could be as much as $53.4 billion.

This is not a federal problem...states brought it upon themselves. Everyone runs to Uncle Sam to solve their problems. I have to laugh when I see those TV ads by WeCanSolveIt begging to have clean energy within 10 years. While the organization's name implies a group designed to solve problems, all it is capable of is begging the gov’t to solve the problem for them. A better name is WeCantSolveCrapSoYouDoItForUs.
Jodi Rell, governor of CT, has already primed the tax pumps saying we are in for a shortfall of tax revenues for the fiscal year. Cuts will come but so will new taxes. The Govt. never gives up. It never wanes. It never sleeps. It NEVER, EVER thinks that your money is yours. It always sees the dollar as theirs; they just let us use them for a while.
Of course they put essential services on the chopping block. Pork and nonessential services are not on the table for discussion. Discretionary spending is, well, discretionary, and the pols have exercised the discretion not to talk about it.
Did you notice that most of these states have been controlled by the Dim Rats for years. Plus the Dim Wit voters have passed dozens of feel good initiatives...
governor jerry brown unionized all california state employees before leaving office.
we’re living with the consequences.
the police and sheriffs are crooked and do as little as they can get by with.
the prison union is famous.
Gimme Gimme Gimme Gimme
North Carolina Governor Jim Easley bought a new $9 million jet airplane for the state, but when the public found out he canceled the order. What a slime ball.
STAT! We need another fairy tail to throw gazillions at, ta hell with the voters.

Almost every politician wants to keep buying the votes to keep them in office and sticking it to the tax payers to punish them for not wanting to give up more of their hard-earned wages to Socialism.
Most of these states have large illegal immigrant populations. Could be a contributing factor.
kalifornia is going down the tubes because:
1. the state spends wildly during booms and expects to continue spending during downs.
2. these groups control kalifornia:
a. unions. governor jerry brown unionized all state employees. their services are over-compensated and under-performed.
the prison union demands special attention.
b. indian tribes and their casinos. money speaks. prostitution, drugs, crime increase local police budgets nearby.
c. trial lawyers. always liberal-socialist. always destructive.
d. judges. mostly liberal-socialist. destroy the family environment.
e. hollywood, silicon valley etc college-educated leftists.
f. social services and medical coverage of illegals.
g. very high concentration of foreign-born who vote democrat for services. once the extended family producers are landed, they send home for their elderly. the ethnic and religious groups’ lawyers get them apartments, social services, etc.
h. enviro whackos.
did i forget anything?
Cut the salaries of all public employees across the board by 20%. That will make a huge dent. Cut their benefits and pensions. States should go bankrupt if that’s what it takes to renegotiate a contract.
Florida Budget gap (as a % of the total budget): 19.9%
Gap: $5.1 billion
The Florida housing slump is one of the worst in the nation and only appears to be getting worse. The $66 billion Florida budget for the coming year is about $6 billion less than the one approved the previous year. It includes a $332 million reduction in public school spending and cuts to state hospitals, nursing homes, and various social programs.
Great, just great. On the other hand, our winters are warm.
I wonder how much it’s going to cost when foreclosed property owners don’t send in tax payments. Will the banks be able to cover them?
From the article:
“Arizona was hit hard by the subprime crisis, and its economy has slowed significantly since mid-2006. Lawmakers, who had to make up a $2 billion budget shortfall for fiscal 2009, reduced the Medicaid rolls, put a freeze on hiring, and cut funding for community health centers and state universities.”
Good start - do more!
Maryland “Freak State” PING!
Didn’t O’Malley ram a massive tax increase down the citizen’s throats already? If I recall correctly, he couldn’t even wait to be inaugurated before he did it.
At $22 billion, California is 4 times more in the hole than the next highest state. It just goes to show what you can accomplish if you put your mind to it. Eat it, losers.
The States of Montana, and Wyoming have just announced that their States now each have a Surplus of 1 Billion Dollars. Seems there is a marked for coal.
