House Speaker Nancy Pelosi called for a new $150 billion economic-stimulus package today and suggested Congress may need to act this year.
"We have some harsh decisions to make. Some of them can't wait until January," she said in Colorado today after a tour of Denver Health Medical Center's pediatric emergency facilities.
"What we can't wait for is a stimulus package," she said. "We may have to go back into session before the next Congress."
Pelosi praised the Federal Reserve's decision this morning to lower a key interest rate but said more needs to be done quickly to reinvigorate the nation's economy.
She suggested $150 billion may be needed to invest in the economy, create new jobs and provide medical and food-stamp benefits. "We need emergency food assistance," she said.
Pelosi also called on the White House to work with other leading industrial nations to frame a joint response to the global banking crisis.
"We need this coordinated effort among the industrial countries," she said, because money could flow to nations that promise unlimited deposit insurance and "weaken our financial interests."
Pelosi came to Colorado, a battleground state in this year's presidential election, with U.S. Rep. Diana DeGette, a Denver Democrat.
Both praised Denver Health, a hospital that has provided billions of dollars in care to uninsured patients, as a model for the country's future health care system.
They also supported Democrat Barack Obama's health care plan and criticized the health care proposal of Republican nominee John McCain.
Pelosi repeatedly compared the costs of health care programs to spending on the war in Iraq.
The federal budget for cancer research could be doubled, for instance, for the amount of money spent in Iraq in two weeks, she said. "Should we be spending money on a war without end when we cannot support our own economy?"
Pelosi and DeGette both cited the State Children's Health Insurance Program and expanded stem-cell research as health care priorities for the next Congress.
DeGette, a leading advocate of embryonic stem-cell research, questioned whether a McCain administration would continue to "tell researchers what type of research to do" because his running mate, Sarah Palin, is an opponent of that research.
Geez...
Just a taste of life under 0bama. It will never stop.

The people get what they deserve. Hello Socialism.
Geez, it only took a week to get the second sky is falling alarm. We had a bunch of idiot politicians saying we need a bailout without any experts offering input. Now, Pelosi figues she can do the same thing. We need a $150 billion now, before Christmas without any input from the experts. This will never end now that they got this going.
Still trying to get that funding for ACORN.
Those people you describe get what they deserve - the rest of us get raked over the coals. Socialism will ultimately destroy the spirit of innovation and will kill the work ethic. At some point, those of us that have been productive will have to stop and ask ourselves "Why do I continue to work for what I have when I can get it for free?"
When laziness pays as much as working, guess which path people will choose..
At what point does this incompetence become sedition?
Well said.
This should be shouted from the rooftops!
Told you all that nationalized health care was next.I mean, why not? We’ve nationalized home mortgages, brokerages, banks, and business’.It was the only thing left to nationalize.
Just gave you 700 Million that we do not have and now you want another 150 million that we do not have. Then if by some nightmare scenario you get Obama in the Whitehouse you will want even more Trillions of dollars we do not have. Then you get you dream come true. A destroyed America. Good job Pelosi
YES! Cut all corporate taxes to 0, all capital gains taxes to 0, and watch the "Stimulation" blast-off from a safe distance.
It was obvious when they loaded up the ‘bailout’ with pork that their hubris would be our undoing.
These politicians are antagonistic to our very existence.
Pitchforks and torches, people.
Pitchforks and torches.
