Michigan Republicans oppose McCain pullout
Politico via Yahoo ^ | 10/04/08 | Alexander Burns

Posted on 10/05/2008 3:18:26 AM PDT by jerry557

In the aftermath of John McCain's decision to pull out of Michigan, Republicans in the state are expressing shock and bewilderment at his move — and aren't willing to cede the state's 17 electoral votes just yet.

“We’re blindsided, along with everybody else in Michigan,” said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. “I feel like I woke up this morning, and there was a note on my pillow.”

“When the general leaves the battlefield when the fight’s still going on, it creates a lot of chaos,” he said.

Saul Anuzis, the chairman of the state party, sent out a fundraising message Friday morning that called McCain’s decision “a tough blow.”

“The McCain campaign announced they were shifting resources and staff out of Michigan to other targeted states. Other states ‘today’ offer a better opportunity for the campaign,” Anuzis wrote on his blog, paraphrasing the McCain campaign’s explanation. “We do not agree.”

Michigan had been seen as one of McCain’s top targets among the states Sen. John F. Kerry won in 2004, along with Pennsylvania, Wisconsin and New Hampshire. The Republican now appears resigned to the state's electoral votes — which Kerry claimed by a little more than 3 percentage points and the Real Clear Politics polling average now shows Barack Obama leading by 7 points — going to the Democrat.

Mike Duhaime, the McCain campaign’s political director, explained the decision as a necessary tactical choice.

"It's been the worst state of all the states that are in play," he said in a conference call Thursday. "It's the obvious state, in my perspective, to come off the list."

Wayne County Machine too difficult to knock off..

Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Hampshire are more likely to fall into Mccain’s category than Michigan.

The ‘maverick’ image plays well in Wisconsin.

PA voted third party for McCain’s hero Teddy Roosevelt as the Bull Moose candidate in 1912.

Well if it’s off the list for McCain then why are there so many Obama adds on TV? Why is Obama spending so much in the state?

Because the Obama campaign says they are convinced this pull-out is a trick. They think McCain is trying to get them to declare victory and move out of Michigan, so then independent groups move in and carpet-bomb the state with ads against Obama.

I could not agree more. I had just placed three McCain/Palin yard signs along my extended Michigan highway property when the announcement came of the pull out. I am as angry at this as anything the McCain camp has done. Talk about waving a white flag. Excuse me, I’ve got to go spit.

I’m in MI and still seeing McCain ads.
I think they may be right. The BO is still going strong here.

Either that or the BO figures the stemcell vote will get too many conservatives out.
The ads are brilliant for our side. Instead of attacking the measure from a moral POV, they say it raises taxes. MI is in a six year resession. People don’t want more taxes.

“Trust me, they’re gonna go back in”

Only if Sarah has anything to say about it. McCain seems to be confused about her strengths as one of US who cares about the public.

If you recall right Mccain and Obama made a deal and Obama promised to accept public financing. Then backed out. Mccain is keeping his word and he is accepting public financing. Which limits the amount of money he can spend in campaign. It was probably a smart move to pull out when u have limited resources. Independent groups are not limited

Hey - quit whinning. There’s seven pages of registered Freepers in Michigan. You want Palin in Michigan. Get organized and get going. You’ve got to out work the Wayne County machine. Report back when eveyone like you has a McCain-Palin sign in their yard like you do. Oh Yeah, since you have such a large place, sounds like you can host a Freepers for McCain Palin Rally and invite McCain-Palin to come.

I know the people of Michigan feels abandon but I sure there is a good reason , they must really feel they have no chance to win that state.I could be wrong but I believe Michigan has always been a Democratic state in a race so close you have to protect your strong area’s or states.Florida ,Ohio are in trouble and the past shows they cant afford to lose those states.

Or do guerilla warfare like me. I got 3 voters to switch to McClame yesterday BECAUSE of Sarah in the debate. I think I can get another one today ..My Sister. If I get her you can get anybody. That would be 4 votes I get this weekend. Living in Florida I know how important 4 votes can be.

Simple electoral politics. It would be nice if there was a hope of winning some of these “blue states” but the numbers prove otherwise or they would not have pared down in MI. McCain doesn’t have unlimited international funny money, like Obama does so he has to be wise on how he spends it. A state that keep electing democrats to positions of authority like Hip Hop Kilpatrick, gets what they deserve.
Michigan is probably like MD in that you’ll have more dead people voting than live Republicans.

The democrats only consistently win 9 or 10 of our 83 counties. Seems like it would be wise to look at which of those could be flipped rather than dumping the whole state.

Oh, thank you. Why didn't I think of this. Just open up my property and invite Sarah to come hold a FR rally and McCain will reopen Michigan and return to the state. Man, that is so much easier than I thought. Thanks for your help.

This is how you win Mi. Get someone to contact Ted Nugent ASAP. Have Ted get Kid Rock. Get Sarah Palin to get Dick Devos to give them use of his jet. Do free concerts at Northern Mi Un, CMU,VanAndel arena GR that night. Next Day do MSU,Michigan, and end at night filing the silverdome.

Make it about GUNS and the right to keep them and we can win. I am afraid that Chuck the Nob Yob is too old to be able to put this together so we need to do it. Anyone know TED?

Let go MI Freepers

I’ve noticed the same thing. We’re getting bombarded by Obama ads here hour after hour on almost every cable channel. I’ve also noticed that the ads are especially numerous on the radio during the breaks on Hannity’s and Rush’s programs. Psychological warfare. It’s maddening.

How about purchasing a few billboards on I-75 running through Macomb and Oakland Counties, northbound. Traffic is terrible right now because of construction the whole way up and there’s not alot of businesses spending money on advertising.

On the billboards: That picture of Reid, Pelosi and Barney Frank last Sunday yucking it up.

With the text: “NEVER AGAIN!” - Sarah Palin

I wonder how much that would cost? I might just check into it.

Meanwhile... McCain’s in AZ prepping, Obama’s in NC, Palin’s in NE and Biden’s home.

So why would Obama be in NC? Seems we’re doing more defending lately.

Are you active in the McCain/Palin effort in Michigan?

If so, please let me know of specific strategies/efforts that I can share with others.

I realize the polls don’t look good in MI, but I am convinced they’re skewed. I think the real difference (actual voters) is closer to 2-3%. They can definitely make that up.

I wonder why Romney hasn’t been here. I think he could also still make a big impact. Especially if he were to appear here and highlight why MI is in so much trouble because of the dems (Granholm and Kwame).

“We’re blindsided, along with everybody else in Michigan,” said Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson. “I feel like I woke up this morning, and there was a note on my pillow.”

Yes, L, that was a note on your pillow. It's called a "Dear John McCain letter," saying "Adios, My Friends." Well, at least that's what one political cartoon said...
