Their progress watched closely by increasingly jittery western militaries, dozens of nuclear bombers will take part in the exercise. Tu-95 Bear bombers will fire cruise missiles at targets in sub-Arctic Russia for the first time since 1984.
While Russia insists that the war games are not meant as a gesture of aggression, the West is growing increasingly uneasy about the scale of the manoeuvres.
The aerial exercises, which will take place close to American airspace in Alaska, are part of a month-long war game known as Stability 2008 that Russia claims is the biggest for 20 years.

Need to buzz them with our latest aircraft scare the crap out of them. ;-)
There are a *bunch* of former Russian Cryptolinguists who would love to get back into the game. Sign me up!
Russia has Putin and we are in danger of getting Obama
Palin has more forien policy experice than Obama and Biden combined.
Obama will flex his national security threads by pointing out that the russians don't dare conduct these exercises near Illinois airspace.
This might b more interesting but I doubt it. Well, maybe they could sink another submarine filled to the brim with barbeque sauce and supersonic torpedos or something.
No argument from me ;-)
Russia perceives America as weak. Partly because the alternative media do not have nearly as much influence overseas. Thus they underestimate America’s resolve.
And they are trying to jockey for superpower position to fill the power vacuum that CNN has tried to create.
Sometimes I think the fall of the USSR was not such a good thing. At least they were contained. mMaybe I’m naive.
Russia is a regional power....nothing more......Putin looking to change the topic as he popularity dives along with the Russian Stock market....
Considering where the US is in fighter technology games would be the correct operative word for these flight exercises by the Russians. ;-)
I wonder how many Bears and Backfires we could bag if we didn’t play fair?
bet the navy is happy they closed keflavik now.
As many as they put up. And, as quickly as they put them up.
The timing of this is sorta weird though. I don’t think this would be helpful to the Magic One among independents.
I am not into predictions about the future but hopefully this won’t contribute or be a part of the Web Bot prediction of an event worse that 9/11 on October 7, 2008.
Additionally, Putin in the King James Bible interpretations numerically equals 666 or the Anti-Christ.
Slammers to the max!
“While Russia insists that the war games are not meant as a gesture of aggression, the West is growing increasingly uneasy about the scale of the manoeuvres.”
Considering the dismal performance of the Russian Air Force in Georgia, where they missed more targets with PGMs than they hit, they definitely need the practice.
“Additionally, Putin in the King James Bible interpretations numerically equals 666 or the Anti-Christ”
His name would have to add up to that in Hebrew letters, or else it wouldn’t count (assuming that this is the correct understanding of the “666” passage anyway, which isn’t a given).
And Putin is hardly in the position to say “I am the savior of Israel”...
I got out of the Army in '92. Two years later they sent me a letter asking me to come back. I think they'd take us with a foot half in the grave :)
The only problem is those language skills. Man, do I need to brush up on those!
One way I'm going to start is by watching the more amusing stuff on on Russian YouTube.
And in case you missed it, here is the link to an article the other day of a Russian LT who rapped his way to Siberia because he complained to the министр обороны about the crappy conditions in the Army. He did a great job with the rap so make sure you watch it.
We have any 22s in Alaska? This would be an excellent time to booger a few Rooskie aircraft and then just disappear.
You know, he can't be this stupid. His market isn't going to stage a comeback with this saber rattling. I think this is going to give him the opening he needs for further consolidating his grip over Russian society.
They might encroach; shoot some down; it’s good for them.
We have any 22s in Alaska?Any?
This could be entertaining if done well.
Would be great training for both countries! ;-)
two wars, a nuclear Iran, a transition in N. Korea, a growing Chinese threat, and the return of the Russian Bear. A perfect time to elect a pacifist whose stated goal is to eliminate our military development programs.
Problem is, our latest aircraft buzz them without them noticing the buzz!
Why do you think Putin cares a whit about the Moscow Stock Exchange?
Russia's income is derived from exporting natural resources, particularly gas and petroleum. How is that dependent on the stock market? The West will consume oil and gas, regardless.
Russian stupidity? Who would have guessed? Its only the Russians that think they aren’t stupid.
Putin has about as much real sense as his buddie amanutjob.
They are really going to “surprise” us with those Bears which are about as far from stealthy as you can get.
USSR being a real challenge to us back then was no different that the sham bailout.
ROFLMAO! Great point. Put on the air brakes for an instant, then disappear again. And/or take pictures and send then to puty pute in an album. ;-)
FRiends, this Putin is a dangerous lunatic.
Not that any of us are surprised.
“The aerial exercises, which will take place close to American airspace in Alaska”
I guess Governor Palin had a point.
CRASH
He would sacrifice the Tu-95 crews as fake out. Also their cruise missiles could be used against targets in the classic stand-off. I’d have to look up the range of the AS-16 (think they’re still active) but that’s what they use against carriers.
Fortunately our SM-3’s are now deployed.
oh yahh, take a look at our 40 year old technology!!!! We’re really going to impress the hell out of..............ourselves!!!!
lol
So, pretty cool that Sarah mentioned you last night. Maybe she was a freeper...;0)
Mark Steyn wrote about me extensively today, too!
Can you explain that? I am not being smart, I would just like you know how you came to that conclusion about Putin. How did you interpret it to a number?
Thanks,
PTBAA
Reminds me of when McCain says he sees KGB when he looks into Putins eyes.
Additionally, Putin in the King James Bible interpretations numerically equals 666 or the Anti-Christ.
******
What the H*** are you talking about?
Are you drinking?
We were just talking about this on another thread...the Obama dress (barf) and someone said the antichrist is sometimes called The Assyrian, which (I figured) would be he would rise out of the rebuilt Babylon that is being worked on now.
If I were a Republican strategist, which I'm not because we havent' hammered the blame for the Mae/Mac debacale home, I would be making real political hay over this. Like, they're not-flying-over-Illinois-or-Delaware-hay.
I have a strange feeling they might fly over Illinois....pray that they don’t. I will be.
With 11 months to go before retirement he was sent to Alaska for a year. Though he lives 300 miles from me we get together fairly often and he has said to me, "Ron, what you read in the spy novels isn't even close to what we really can do". And that was 20 years ago. He laughs at James Bond movies.
I don’t feel the need to pray. We’re badder than we know.
Because it's one of the last symbols they have of showing the world they are for democracy and free trade.
Get rid of that and they can crank up the Soviet stock exchange.
