U.S.-led forces said they shot dead a leader of al Qaeda in Iraq on Friday who was the mastermind behind a series of deadly recent bombings in Baghdad.

A spokesman for coalition forces said Mahir Ahmad Mahmud Judu' al-Zubaydi, also known as Abu Assad or Abu Rami, had been al Qaeda in Iraq's "emir" of the Rusafa neighborhood of the capital.

Abu means “father of,” and is followed by the name of the man’s oldest son, or sometimes someone he admires. Family members often refer to each other by their kuniyya names, but terrorists use them all the time to hide their identiy and confuse others; to the untrained ear kuniyya names sound like legitimate names, but in fact they are titles (and thus pseudonyms in terrorists’ cases).
