Klein: Palin Was Fine, But This Debate Was No Contest
Time ^ | 10/03/08 | JOE KLEIN

Posted on 10/03/2008 10:15:22 AM PDT by presidio9

She did fine, I suppose.

She was animated and confident. She displayed an ability, for the first time since her convention speech, to repeat with a fair amount of credibility, the formulations that her handlers had given her. You knew she was well prepared when practically the first words out of her mouth were, "Go to a kids' soccer game..." She had that folksy thing down -

-SNIP-

Indeed, Sarah Palin's high-energy performance in the vice-presidential debate was the most glaring demonstration - since George W. Bush's performances in 2000 - of how little you can get away with knowing and still survive one of these things, especially if the rules limit the cross-examination as severely as they did in this debate. Her relentless opacity was impressive. She refused to answer the questions where she hadn't been prepped with answers and when Biden pointed out that an early question had been on deregulation not taxes, she flashed: "I may not answer the questions the way you and the moderator want to hear, but I'm gonna talk straight to the American people."

-SNIP-

The fact that Palin made it through the debate without running off the stage shouting, "I can't do this!" should not obscure the fact that there was only one person tonight whom anyone with any sense - even John McCain, I imagine - would trust as President. Biden's performance was strong and, happily, gimmick free. He used no gotcha soundbites, no consultant-driven silliness - a fact driven home by the lameness of Palin's snark lines like, "Say it ain't so, Joe" and - pace, Gipper - "There you go again, talking about the past."

-SNIP-

Joe Klein is a snob.

Joe Klein is completely out of touch with the voters who love Sarah Palin. When someone like Joe Biden starts talking really fast and throwing out a lot of names, they tune out. Not because they are dumber than Joe Biden, but because he usually doesn't fully understand the subject either. So he mememorizes five or six quick details, to let people know that he is paying attention. Meanwhile, the rest of America, is gravitating towards Palin, because she is the only one of the four who is one of them.

This needs to be brought up:

Biden, Obama helped keep ‘Bridge to Nowhere’ alive

Joe Biden, Barack Obama voted to kill a Senate amendment diverting bridge funding

Both voted for final transportation bill that included the $223 million bridge earmark

I don't know why the hatred on his part. Maybe he'd be more comfortable with her if she was 53, dumpy, and covered with cat hair.

Biden slipped into policy wonk a few times. Sure it impresses the Joe Klein’s of the world, but any undecideds at this point are going to vote for the team they like the most. Sarah Palin is very likable, in particular to Joe Six-Pack..

Actually what is amazing is that Joe Biden could get reelected to the Senate so many times and still not know a thing about the Constitution he swore an oath to uphold and defend.

Biden showed an incredible ability to make up facts and to deny the truth and to do it without blinking or batting an eye.

I guess the cosmetic tape on his eyes that made him look like Charlie Chan helped him in that regard.

The MEdia types are beginning to realize that if Obama LOSES, the REAL losers will be THEM...

They tried to help Kerry in 2004, and failed. This time, they have pulled out ALL the stops, they are quoting copy written by the moonbats at Daily KOS, and have thrown away all pretense of beinng “Unbiased”.

They have spread LIE AFTER LIE, openly tried to make the Republican Pres and VP candidates look bad or stupid, time and again, and have even openly campaigned for Obama.

If they LOSE this election, the lib-infested media is going to have a LOT to answer for. And it should start with thier stockholders.

Classic Orwell. Up is down, fiction is fact. If you repeat the lie enough, it becomes true.

That's all they have left. I watched Friday's McCain-Obama debate with my mostly-apolitical brother, and he immediately keyed on how many times Obama said McCain was "right." We both agreed that McCain looked experienced and presidential, while Obama looked like an amateur.

Watching the pundits afterward who said Obama won the contest was absolutely unreal.

The author of this piece is forgetting something important.

1. Palin connected with real people. She really is one of us. She also had an awesome commmand of the facts. More important to me, and I’m a public speaker, is her quickness on her feet. She was nailing things instead of stumbling around.

2. For Biden, it is not depth and gravitas if you pull phony facts out of your ass.

Klein pretty much nails it. Palin stopped the hemorrhaging and had some effective sound bites. She probably had some appeal to the Oprah generation. But, she failed to answer some questions and many responses were generalities and cliche's and lacked even an elementary analysis. Several responses seemed canned.

Biden avoided making an arse out of himself. He had his drama queen moment which will probably resonate with the Oprah generation. He served his master well in relentlessly attacking McCain. Overall, it was Biden’s best debating performance of the last two years.

Klein is really kissing up. I can't see how these leftie MSM love Biden so much, with an eye toward these VP candidates as president. It's not like he was a shining star in the Dem primaries, barely losing out to Obama, quite the opposite. Not to mention his lies just during the debate, Joe Biden's 14 lies tonight.

How could anyone say that Biden is qualified to be VP when he doesn’t even know what the Constitutional powers and role of this office which he seeks even are?

Hey Joe Klein, I and probably millions of us stopped subscribing to Slime when Slime/you ran all those lies about Ronald Reagan.

Speaking of lies:

Fresh from the McCain people.

JOE BIDEN’S 14 LIES DURING THE DEBATE!

1. TAX VOTE: Biden said McCain voted “the exact same way” as Obama to increase taxes on Americans earning just $42,000, but McCain DID NOT VOTE THAT WAY.

2. AHMEDINIJAD MEETING: Joe Biden lied when he said that Barack Obama never said that he would sit down unconditionally with Mahmoud Ahmedinijad of Iran. Barack Obama did say specifically, and Joe Biden attacked him for it.

3. OFFSHORE OIL DRILLING: Biden said, “Drill we must.” But Biden has opposed offshore drilling and even compared offshore drilling to “raping” the Outer Continental Shelf.”

4. TROOP FUNDING: Joe Biden lied when he indicated that John McCain and Barack Obama voted the same way against funding the troops in the field. John McCain opposed a bill that included a timeline, that the President of the United States had already said he would veto regardless of it’s passage.

5. OPPOSING CLEAN COAL: Biden says he’s always been for clean coal, but he just told a voter that he is against clean coal and any new coal plants in America and has a record of voting against clean coal and coal in the U.S. Senate.

6. ALERNATIVE ENERGY VOTES: According to FactCheck.org, Biden is exaggerating and overstating John McCain’s record voting for alternative energy when he says he voted against it 23 times.

7. HEALTH INSURANCE: Biden falsely said McCain will raise taxes on people's health insurance coverage -- they get a tax credit to offset any tax hike. Independent fact checkers have confirmed this attack is false

8. OIL TAXES: Biden falsely said Palin supported a windfall profits tax in Alaska -- she reformed the state tax and revenue system, it's not a windfall profits tax.

9. AFGHANISTAN / GEN. MCKIERNAN COMMENTS: Biden said that top military commander in Iraq said the principles of the surge could not be applied to Afghanistan, but the commander of NATO's International Security Assistance Force Gen. David D. McKiernan said that there were principles of the surge strategy, including working with tribes, that could be applied in Afghanistan.

10. REGULATION: Biden falsely said McCain weakened regulation -- he actually called for more regulation on Fannie and Freddie.

11. IRAQ: When Joe Biden lied when he said that John McCain was “dead wrong on Iraq”, because Joe Biden shared the same vote to authorize the war and differed on the surge strategy where they John McCain has been proven right.

12. TAX INCREASES: Biden said Americans earning less than $250,000 wouldn’t see higher taxes, but the Obama-Biden tax plan would raise taxes on individuals making $200,000 or more.

13. BAILOUT: Biden said the economic rescue legislation matches the four principles that Obama laid out, but in reality it doesn’t meet two of the four principles that Obama outlined on Sept. 19, which were that it include an emergency economic stimulus package, and that it be part of “part of a globally coordinated effort with our partners in the G-20.”

14. REAGAN TAX RATES: Biden is wrong in saying that under Obama, Americans won't pay any more in taxes then they did under Reagan.

NOW, NOW, NOW...THERE GOES JOE BIDEN LYING AGAIN.

Biden takes advantage of the fact that it's easy to speak smoothly if you are willing to lie.

Last night Biden lied when he said that

he had warned that the Iraq war would take a "decade."
On a YouTube video of Charlie Rose's show: January 27, 2003 you can see the truth (at 24:00),
Biden said that he thought the war would be relatively short

...there was only one person tonight whom anyone with any sense - even John McCain, I imagine - would trust as President...

Actually, that was the one point where I agreed with Joe Kelin. That is why I'm voting for Governor Palin and Senator McCain next month - she was the only person on that stage whom anyone sensible would trust as President. Governor Palin shows her patriotism by trying to make sure we win the war against terrorists. Senator Biden suggests that we show our patriotism by paying higher taxes. Even though I'm below the level where Biden claims my taxes would rise, I still find that an easy choice.

I came to a very similar conclusion. I found myself thinking that given what we have to choose from, I would rather see Palin and Biden at the top of the respective tickets. Palin because she is more conservative and more plain spoken. Biden because Obama scares the bejeebers out of me. He is naive and foolish.

I agree with you. But I didn't get the same take from Klein's article, I thought he pretty much thought she was fluffy and nice and prepped with talking points, but not VP material. And I disagreed with that. As to Biden, I doubt he really means what he says about taxes and I expect we will all likely end up paying higher taxes whatever level we're at. Oh, he'll excuse it by saying it's the 'bailout' or the war, etc, but he seems eager to get to it...
