Kaine restores voting rights to felons
Washington Times ^ | October 3, 2008 | Gary Emerling

Virginia Gov. Tim Kaine has granted voting rights to nearly 1,500 felons this year, bumping up the voter rolls ahead of next month's presidential election and putting himself on pace to exceed the record-setting pattern of his predecessor.

During his four years as governor, Mark Warner, a Democrat now running for the U.S. Senate, restored voting rights to 3,414 ex-convicts in Virginia. That exceeded the combined total for all Virginia governors during the previous 20 years, according to the Sentencing Project, a Washington-based advocacy group.

If it was a “right” it wouldn’t need “restoring” in the first place.................

I doubt very seriously that these type of people are ever eager to exercise their “right”...............

This shows why governors are important in national elections.

Yeah, I wonder what the breakdown would be. I figure most criminals would call themselves democrats.

Timmy Kaine is an idiot.

True, but the VA GOP are a bunch of absolute "Morans" (pun intended) for putting up such lackluster candidates that allow the likes of Kaine and Warner get into power in the first place. If ineffective candidates like Gilmore is the best we can do we deserve what we get. Gilmore is going to get trounced even in traditional GOP areas.

90% of them will be too drugged out or hung over to find the polling places anyway...

The Maryland General Assembly last year repealed its layered disenfranchisement law. The state now restores voting rights for all felons on completion of their sentences, and more than 52,000 people were granted voting rights as a result of the change.

That has to hurt Republicans.

Yup, you’re right!

However, felons don’t vote a lot. They break the law.

Crats are getting out the burglar vote. Wonder if they have a bailout provision to get a lot of their voters out of jail for the election.

In Florida, basically all you have to do is fill out a request for “Restoration of Civil Rights”.........

That has to hurt Republicans.

Republicans are few and far between here in the Peoples Republic of Maryland.

There are just three counties in this state that keep Maryland a democRAT state.

I am beginning to think that we need to go to a national election being decieded in each state by how many counties the candidate wins in that state and not just population of the state.

I am sick and tired of Baltimore, Prince George's and Montgomery Counties decieding the election for the entire state.

Did I say state enough in this comment? :^D

“5,000 voting felons is 5,000 more democrat votes”

I know one felon in VA who became a christian while serving a sentence for drug abuse and he will be voting republican.

I’m sure he’s delighted with the news.

Most probably don’t vote anyway. It works for democrats if they restore voting rights to particular felons that they know will vote and will make that vote for the Rats.

These people had to petition the Gov to get this done. That means they promised to vote Demonrat.

Yup, but it isn't designed to let only demonrats get their rights restored. VA's is at the discretion of a Rat gov.

IIRC, Florida has to have a governor’s approval also, but it is usually handled by a low level bureaucrat, unless it is a high profile case.....

Perhaps.

I’ve had the great pleasure of meeting some of the finest felons in America - and they didn’t strike me as good citizens.

Mayhaps they will stick up a 7-Eleven on the way to the polls? :)

wow! Great question. I’m willing to bet they only get the voting right restored but the right to bear arms isn’t returned.

I have no issue with this.

If a felon has paid their debt to society I believe their voting liberties should be automatically restored.

I’m thinking that no change in voting laws should be allowed to take effect within the year it’s enacted. That might stop all of this last minute jockeying by a certain party to bump up their numbers.
