"McCain's health-care plan would deregulate the health insurance industry, just like previous legislation he supported deregulating the financial services industry."

I wish Gov. Palin hammered it home a little harder last night but she came close. The question would have been; "with what's going on now in the Congress right now, do you really want these people telling you when you can see a Doctor"?

I heard an Obama commercial this morning on the radio - something about John McCain wanting to tax health benefits as income. It is a very effective ad and needs to be countered with extreme prejudice. Anything that could be construed as a tax increase needs to be dropped from McCain’s platform ASAP, no matter how asinine or convoluted the connection is between the policy and the claim. If my understanding of the plan they reference is correct, then the ad is misleading because the accounting works out to the taxpayer’s benefit in the end - but the casual observer may not see it that way.

Americans are being squeezed right now because of inflation (I don’t care what the gamed CPI data says - gas, food, and other goods have been skyrocketing in price for months, and if a “single” increase (gas) is double-counted in my pocketbook, it should be double-counted in the computation of the CPI). Charges of tax increases are going to stick and do real damage when budgets cannot be stretched further. Even if a plan in total is tax neutral, no individual component should consist of a tax increase (even if directly offset by a decrease). It is bad politics, especially right now.
