For the second time in three years, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on Tuesday vetoed legislation that would have established a government-run universal health care system.
Senate Bill 840 by Sen. Sheila Kuehl, D-Santa Monica, would have set up a single-payer system in which the state would assume the role that private insurance companies now play.
In his veto message, the governor said he could not support "a bill that places an annual shortfall of over $40 billion to our state's economy."

This would not be happening if they had a surplus. That is the silver lining and I hope every state in the union has to tighten its belt before this is done.

Who needs universal since now employers have to provide insurance or pay the state to do so.

Make it mandatory for everyone in Hollywood to be full in the system without the option of going to their own private docs and see just how fast this falls out of favor in the California legislature.

I would much rather have heard Arnold say "The hard working people of California don't owe
anyone free health care.
Sheesh!

If I recall, the character Zelda on The Dobie Gillis Show was a pain in the neck to Dobie. Well, now her real persona is a pain in the neck to Californians. She continues to push for the most radical legislation here in the state, year after year after year.

NO but they could make it affordable to those who need medical insurance.
My son has epilepsy not only does it make it twice as hard for him to find work, when he does his epilepsy is not covered. He is unable to drive and his anti-seizure medicine runs 700.00 a month...
Since he has no insurance and cannot purchase any that will cover his condition, he has to take a bus monthly to
a County facility about 2 hrs away to pick his medicine up.
He is suppose to see a Liver Specialist because he has a spot on his liver from taking so much Dilantin, yet no Doctor will see him because he has no insurance..
Our Health Care is appalling in this country

As unfair as our health insurance is in this country, government health care is not the answer. What would happen is that quality health care would become severely rationed in this country and everyone would have to wait in long lines.
To: SmithL
LOL. Not sure I would wish that on anyone, even fictional Dobie.

We'd be like France, where not only do they pay high taxes for socialized medicine, but something around 70% of the people pay for private insurance on top of that.

Our Health Care is appalling in this countryI disagree with that 100%.
Sorry about your son's condition and your lack of affordable health insurance. Just look to Canada, Britain and France if you want to see a worse health care system, all run by the govt. out of taxpayers wallets.

What’s “unfair” is that one person can pay over $300 for a his coverage while another pays under $20 for his family of five. Same provider and benefits. The difference is the family guy has a union negotiating his benefits and the single person pays the provider directly. This strikes me as an immoral setup.

It’s not lack of affordable health insurance it is no Insurance Company will cover him with a pre-exsisting condition, and they do not want to pay for his medicine.
We have been dealing with this issue for 10 yrs now....
Our country has a great healthcare plan if your healthy and never have to go into the hospital.

Plus the *Cobra* plan wants to raise it’s monthly premiums from 800.00 a month to over $1,000.00 a month...
I could never understand this mindset...You are laid off your job, they offer you a plan to pay for medical insurance that your un-employment benefits can pay for???
Thank Goodness I don’t have to depend on my employer for medical insurance and have my own.
