Somali Pirates Demand $20 Million Ransom for Ship

MOGADISHU, Somalia — A man claiming to be a spokesman for the Somali pirates who seized a ship laden with Russian tanks says they want $20 million to release the vessel.

Sugule Ali says others who have made earlier ransom demands did not speak for the particular pirates who hijacked the Ukrainian-operated cargo ship Faina on Thursday.

If the Ukrainians ask for help here, we should give it. But.....now would be a good time to ask the Russians about the US equipment they stole in Georgia. Otherwise, we should not expend one ounce of energy or effort to get this ship back. Afterall, the Russians are a world power, their one ship Atlantic Fleet is on the way in a week or so and can handle this problem.

I think shore leave somewhere in southern Europe is in order for our sailors.

There is a destroyer watching it, I say we sink it and be done. Lest those weapons fall into the wrong hands.

The Russians can send the warship on the Caribbean cruise to Somalia.

They better hope the equipment has already been paid for. The fact that the Russians sent a ship probably means they are not (or not fully paid for). The fact that noone is stepping up to claim responsibility seems to show that the pirates are aware of this fact.

Russians do not have anti-war protest, care about the UN, or practice restraint. They will kick ass and take names. Putin will not have his country embarrassed by a bunch of lousy pirates. I say the pirates need to just run while they still can.

Somalia, be warned, the US will not risk war with Russia to save the country that killed our troops and dragged them through the streets. Bush will order our ship to stand down and watch you get pounded to oblivion should the Russian choose to do so.

They could send Bruce Willis in to negotiate, just like in "The Fifth Element".

What is the number of current ships that they have seized this year? Forty? Fifty?

The US Navy should send ships into those waters and just start blowing these punks out of the water and into Hell.

They should sell 'em on E-bay. Someone could buy them and melt them down so the steel could be used to make something that's actually useful for something other than an expensive target.

No, they should kill them (because they are pirates) and then hang their corpses off the yardarms, and steam around Somali waters and ports with a huge frickin banner “We will kill ALL pirates we find.”

This is a Ukrainian ship with an authorized cargo of tanks, sold to Kenya. The US was aware of the sale and has no objection to it.

The Russian warship en route to intercept the hijacked ship most likely has a complement of SPETSNAZ, Russian Special Forces, who will brutally kill all the pirates. This will be an excellent opportunity for the new Russian president to remind the world that they do not mess with Russians.

I would love to see some sting operations in these waters. A vulnerable-looking freighter manned by US military personnel and armed to the teeth.

The pirates started out asking for $35 million. I’m guessing they might be getting scared, hungry, and tired.

In theory I agree. But at some point I sure would like some other nations not already involved militarily somewhere to step up and take care of crap like this.

It’s not like it takes the most powerful navy in the world to take out boats like that. I read about a guy whose boat came under attack and, despite being unarmed, he was able to take care of the two boats that jumped him. He just hit full throttle and sank one of the fiberglass hull boats broadside with his steel hull. The other boat split pretty quickly.

I would also say that there is zero reason to put troops on Somali soil. Been there, done that. Since there is zero control in that country and the UN won’t use the force necessary to actually change that, the only thing to do is make sure their problems stay within their borders.

Ukraine is not yet a member of NATO.

That said. This is bad juju. T 72’s? These are modern tanks.
Someone in Ukraine has strong Russian ties (Viktor Yanukovych)?

Hard for us to defend Yushencko without getting into a political mess.

Now the bloody pirates are involved. Yeesh what a mess.

If I didnt know better I would think this is a Russian ploy to send Tanks Or money to Somalia

Is there anyone onboard that ship that can operate a T72?

One shot would have wiped these dipshits out.

Why is the cargo undefended?

The pirates on the Iranian ship are dropping dead from what sounds like radiation poisoning. They must have opened some cargo to see what they had.

Why is this piracy such a continuing problem? Plan some traps for them, track them, kill them and destroy their ships. Or am I not understanding something?
