Candidates defend right to be stupid

By Howie Carr | Sunday, September 28, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

The State House has never exactly been a refuge for Mensa members - remember Barney Frank’s old joke about how one state rep’s IQ was so low that he was at risk for contracting Dutch elm disease?

If anything, the solons are getting dimmer. This morning, let us consider two candidates, one of whom seeks to represent a MetroWest district full of commuters who use the Turnpike. Yet this Democrat openly states that “tolls are good” - and by the way she’d also be “open” to raising the gas tax too, in case those $8 tolls at the tunnel don’t get the job done.

Then we have another candidate, in Lunenburg, who believes that women were granted the right to vote by the Supreme Court. Let’s start with this rocket scientist, one Jen Benson, who is actually on the Lunenburg School Committee. What an example her erudition (look it up, Jen!) sets “for the children.”

She’s running for the seat being vacated by moonbat Rep. Jamie Eldridge of Acton, and her Biden-esque grasp of history has been posted on YouTube by her Republican opponent, Kurt Hayes.

She’s talking, I think, about gay “marriage,” which she says should not be “left up to the tyranny of the majority of the state.”

No, it should be left up to the tyranny of five unemployable lawyers who gave money to politicians so they could retire to judgeships. But I digress. The Lunenburg loony starts talking about women’s suffrage in 1920, or, as she puts it, “80 years ago.”

“Now considering that men were the only voters, if men had been left to choose whether or not women should be allowed the right to vote, what would the outcome of that be? No, it was left to the Supreme Court.”

Jen, your ignorance is astounding. Women got the right to vote through the 19th Amendment, Jen, and believe it or not the Supreme Court cannot (yet) add amendments directly to the Constitution. Please take good notes, Jen, because there will be a quiz on this. In 1919, Congress approved the women’s suffrage amendment, on votes (mostly by men) of 304-89 in the House and 56-25 in the (predominantly male) Senate.

Then it had to be approved by three-quarters of the state legislatures, which, I hasten to repeat, were made up almost exclusively of men. It took 15 months to get the 36th legislature (Tennessee). Are you following me here, Jen?

“Women won the right to vote by a vote of the Supreme Court,” she repeated, idiotically, “and actually many women were tortured and lost their lives in order to get that right.”

Whatever you say, Jen.

Next, come on down Carolyn Dykema. She’s running for the MetroWest seat held by retiring Rep. Paul Loscocco. Dykema, a moonbat’s moonbat, went to Wellesley College and as a child she spent summers on “a lake in rural Maine,” where she learned “a respect for nature and the environment.”

And what better way to protect the environment than by forcing those nasty non-Prius-driving commuters she’d like to represent on Beacon Hill to pay more tolls?

At a candidate’s forum last month, she was asked about the endless toll increases. After first proposing more tollbooths on the western Pike and at the New Hampshire border, she says:

“Tolls are good for a number of reasons, one I think environmentally. I think encouraging getting rid of the tolls would actually encourage more driving which is not, I believe, in our long-term interests. We should be looking at more public transportation.”

Gotta get to Logan? Just catch the 5:30 a.m. T bus from Holliston, right?

It’s amazing, that a MetroWest candidate could endorse the idea of beggaring her own neighbors on behalf of paying for a new road for another bunch of motorists who aren’t worrying about paying an extra $20 a week in January to get to their jobs, because they have never paid a dime in tolls.

I’m sure that Carolyn is now shocked, shocked to learn that the Pike hacks are floating trial balloons about $8 tolls at the tunnels. But as her opponent Dan Haley said, “If tolls are good, to quote her own position, then higher tolls must be better.”

Every year, you don’t think it can get any worse at the State House, and every year it does. I think the building needs a good spraying - for Dutch elm disease.

This one leaves you speechless.

She never heard of the 19th Amendment?

And has she ever considered out how much gas is wasted by traffic snarls caused by tollbooths?

Tom McCain? Does he mean the shoe store, Thom McCann? :)

WTKK 96.9 Boston—the station that almost got Howie—
has hired Curtis Sliwa to do weeknights 10 pm-1 am.
The Guardian Angel has done fill ins for them before.
He’s probably doing the show from NY (he still works
10-noon at WABC I think). Ingraham displaced except
for Sunday nights. And on stations in Beverly & Worc.

Howie Wed. column ping
Ex gets the last word on trooper hubby
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, October 1, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

First, let me make clear that this unsigned letter I’m about to quote from came from an ex-wife, and that she is dropping a dime on her first husband.

Her ex is, or was, a state trooper on the Turnpike, and she says she wanted me to know just how good he has or had it on the job.

I understand that being a cop can be a dirty, dangerous job. But overall being a state trooper is a very good job indeed, especially when you compare it to what’s happening out here in the Dreaded Private Sector. Let’s go to the letter, which she starts by telling me how much her ex-husband the trooper enjoyed my columns.

“I can honestly tell you that he used to laugh and make fun of your articles.”

How dare he!

“I do not write you to be vindictive, but to enlighten you some on what really goes on with regards to the salaries.”

His base salary, she says, was $60,000 (I think it’s higher now), but he never made less than 180K and once got over $200,000.

“He had a master’s degree, which afforded him an extra 25 percent on top of his regular salary; he was paid $20-a-day tax-free to drive his own car back and forth to work, a perk I understand has been changed; he was paid extra money for passing a physical.”

Much of this is well-known. Here are the MSP payroll numbers from 2007: With overtime, 1,376 of 2,983 staties made more than $100,000. One lieutenant made $206,000 last year, $115,000 above his base pay.

“At the end of each shift (his was 7-3), the Turnpike would have one officer from each station running radar at time-and-a-half under the pretense of keeping the road safe. What a joke.”

He was home for dinner every night by 5:30, she said.

“He would always say that no one cared what time they left, as long as they wrote a certain amount of tickets and that the times on the tickets indicated that they actually worked the 4 hours.”

So how did he get home every afternoon at 5:30?

“He said that he would put the actual time of the ticket on the one he gave to the offender, but the one he submitted with his overtime card would have a later time on it so that it looked like he actually worked 4 hours. This went on for years, Howie.”

Then, of course, there were the paid details.

“My former husband used to sleep half the day because, as he would say, no one ever checks on us, and the construction people don’t care as long as the cruiser is there with the lights flashing - $40 per hour to sleep, not a bad deal, Howie.”

Another mammary: court duty. It was almost as easy as being a judge.

“He would be home every day by noon. If he was assigned a radar detail, he’d go back in at 3:30 and be home again by 5:30, earning $160 for his efforts.”

And finally, filling in on the weekends for “sick” troopers.

“I can remember him saying on weekends, ‘No hon, we can’t make plans today because so-and-so is calling in sick, and I’m next on the OT list to be called.’ And sure enough, he would get the call and go in and make 8 hours overtime. Those were the only times he ever did stay for his entire shift.”

I faxed this anonymous letter to the state police, and they confirmed all the contractual stuff - the Quinn bill payraises, the now-ended driving-to-work perk, etc. The state police spokesman said:

“If this guy did this, shame on him, and if there are others who are doing this, shame on them, because they’re a small minority of more than 2,000 state troopers . . . If there were a name attached to this, I can promise you he would be disciplined.”

Your move, Mrs. Statie. I’d be happy to pass on your ex-husband’s name. You know where to reach me.

Joe being Joe: Biden eager to prove his authenticity
By Howie Carr | Friday, October 3, 2008 | http://www.bostonherald.com

Joe Biden was doing OK for a while last night . . . until he turned into Joe Biden. About 9:45 last night, Champ’s carriage turned into a pumpkin.

Joe Biden is a man of the people. Why, he does the same things just like you and I do. How do we know this? Because Joe Biden told us last night.

“I was recently at my local gas station.”

Recently? Is that how you describe your visits to the “local” gas station. Hey, Joe, did you notice on your most recent visit - they don’t sell leaded gasoline anymore.

You want more proof that Joe Biden is Joe Six-Pack?

“Walk into Home Depot with me where I spend a lot of time.”

To paraphrase Ronald Reagan, if a man will lie to you about hanging out at Home Depot, he’ll lie to you about other things as well.

Home Depot? What was Sen. Biden picking up, chlorine for the pool? It surely wasn’t a hammer, or work gloves. When did the Home Depot start selling arugula?

Actually, I was hoping for more gaffes in St. Louis from Champ, which is his childhood nickname, don’t you know. Champ gives him the common touch. Guys named Champ hang out at Home Depot.

He’s from Scranton, in case you forgot. He’s from “a neighborhood just like you grew up in.” You know, the kind with local gas stations.

They obviously had the muzzle on Palin last night. I wish she’d have corrected him on things like the economic “fundamentals” (Barack says the same things), or hit on Barack’s massive contributions from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

Let’s just say, the undercard on Fox - Bill O’Reilly vs. Barney Frank - had more fireworks in five minutes than they had in 90.

But God, what a pompous windbag Joe Biden is. The man is a hack’s hack. He tried to restrain himself, but as the debate wore on, despite the endless fake smiles, the real Joe Biden began to leak out, the Joe Biden who refers to himself in the third person, as in, “No one has been a better friend to Israel than Joe Biden.”

After 36 years in the Senate, he’s against domestic abuse. Wow, he took on that powerful special interest, Big Wifebeating.

Oddly, the only one of his numerous recent gaffes to get mentioned was brought up by Obama hagiographer Gwen Ifill, who drew blood with his comment about “clean coal.”

To which he responded:

“‘A comment made on a rope line was taken out of context.’

Oh yes, the old taken-out-of-context excuse. He ain’t Shoeless Joe, he’s Alibi Ike.

As it went on, he just turned into the Joe Biden we all know and laugh at.

Joe Biden says “20 million of you” are going to be taxed. Because people like him, as opposed to people like “you,” don’t have to worry about health insurance, just like they don’t have to worry about being attacked for averaging $369 a year in charitable contributions over the last decade on an income of between $210,000 and $321,000.

I know, the mainstream media will say he won. So what else is new? See you around the gas station, Champ.
