Automakers gained $25 billion in taxpayer-subsidized loans and oil companies won elimination of a long-standing ban on drilling off the Atlantic and Pacific coasts as the Senate passed a sprawling spending bill Saturday.
*snip*
The administration won approval of the defense budget. Democrats wrested concessions from the White House on $23 billion for disaster-ravaged states, a doubling of low-income heating subsidies, and smaller spending items such as $24 million more for food shipments to the elderly.

But ... can we really drill ??
Knowing the way this country works (doesn't work) today, realistically, I'd say, "No."
Just like connecting a 4 inch pipe from the tax payers to the bank accounts of the auto makers CEO's, the flow of your tax dollars.
Bump
Means nothing without Congress passed leases.
Only after a series of lawsuits by Greenpeace, The Wilderness Society, Earth First etc, in every county of every State with ocean front.
Obama said in debate he was going to drill and create more jobs...hmmm. The news was they were going allow offshore drilling, but my concern is that the oil is within the first 50 miles out.
Chump change. They should get better lobbyists. ;)
Passed with lots of pork.
sure, we can drill..... just not within 300 miles of shore or where any oil or gas is actually believed to exist.
/sarcasm
We can drill until January. I think it was Pelosi who said that it was temporary, until after the election. They know renewing the drill ban would have been very unpopular now. If they get lots of new Dems, they will make new limits as fast as they can, it seems.
I’d like to know when auto loans became such a national financial crisis. I guess it’s now a right to have a car, too.
Feinstein said a bill to reimpose the expiring drilling ban will be submitted after the election.
Let the drilling ban expire. A democRAT drilling bill is not needed.
~~ChaChing!
No, not with Democrats running things in DC.
Would you take a chance on spending your money on drilling while a bunch of lunatics can legislate you out of business?
They are getting us further and further in debt. They really need to go.
I can assure you they won’t get lots of new dems. They are pulling all this stuff because they want us to believe they are the power and we don’t have any. That’s wrong and is a risky play they will lose.
When are people going to start believing it is not Congress or the President that have the power in this country.
They just took more liquidity out of the market. Spend spend spend. Borrow borrow borrow.
Power.
Who cares if the taxpayer suffers? As long as I am The One in Power, I will rule with an iron fist.
They need to go back to their holes. Where’s Coulter’s piece from 2001? Put in Frank, Dodd, Schumer, Pelosi or Reid’s names. Works for me.
It’s not for loans, it is just bailout money, The loan parts will be slipped into the 700 to 900 zillion.
Let the Japanese auto companies buyout GM and Ford
Have the Chinese been consulted about this new spending?
Their $25bln has nothing to do with auto loans. The money is a fund they can use to borrow from to run their business. GM has just used up its line of credit. Of course, I say let them sink or swim.
What does the lack of any credit for any company due to the lack of confidence in U.S. banks have to do with whether a company should die?
With the stock market being what it is lately, I put a significant amount of my portfolio in cash. While the stock market has dropped 20%, my portfolio has dropped only 7%.
Last week, my financial adviser called me to see where I wanted to put $200,000 after two CD's had matured. He recommended that, instead of a commercial bank, I consider putting in in T-Bills. That money would therefore be unavailable for loans to any business, maybe your business or your employer's business.
I told him to pick two separate commercial bank CD's as they were insured by the FDIC up to $100,000. If the FDIC went belly up, my dollars wouldn't be worth much.
That was the level of panic last week: Financial advisers were advising their clients to avoid ALL commercial banks.
Once you take the attitude that companies whose banks no longer can lend should fail, you might wake up one morning without a job because your company or your employer's company has failed because it no longer has a line of credit.
“smaller spending items such as $24 million more for food shipments to the elderly”
Let them feed themselves!
By the way, i’m 71.
Damned if I know. I hadn't really looked at it that way. GM's problems preceeded the current credit crunch, though I suppose it may finish them off.
OK, let's get busy -- we've unemployed people out there who need jobs!
Drill Here, Drill Now, Pay Less!
Grrrrrrrr.....
Color me confused. I thought the ban expires on 11/1/08 if not renewed. So, if there is a section in this big bill that refers to drilling, it shouldn’t be necessary.
Why is it in this bill, unless it allows some restrictions or other mischief WRT drilling?
See, I’m confused . . . or shell-shocked.
Senate Passes Auto Loans, Drilling Bill
Arrrrrrrrrrrrrrgh!!!
Another pet peeve of mine - is it too much trouble for these 'journalists' to tell us peons the FRICKING BILL NUMBER in the article!
None of them do. And trying to search Thomas without it is useless. Typing in 'Spending Bill', Auto Loan', whatever, as keywords will return 600 results.
Give us the bill number, we can read dammit!
