McCain's Trump Card - The Debate Argument He Didn't Make - But Could Still Help Him Win
nypost.com ^ | September 27, 2008 | Dick Morris & Eileen McGann

During Friday's debate, John McCain assiduously and inexplicably avoided using the issue that might have won him the debate and the presidency: opposition to a taxpayer-funded bailout of the financial crisis.

Congress is about to pass - and the president is about to sign - a bill that the American people detest by 2:1 margins. When Americans realize that there is, indeed, an alternative to handing over $700 billion to financial institutions as a reward for their failure, opposition to the idea will swell even further.

The bailout ideas proposed by the House Republicans and trumpeted by former Speaker Newt Gingrich make eminent sense.

Masterful, I think that is the plan... Get the Rats and the RINO’s to collaborate on a Failed plan for the economy. My God Congress approval is single digits no one trusts that these yahoos are gonna get it right...

Let Obambi bust out with all the glory of wrapping himself around this failed policy and then Hang him with it as the voters revolt.

Rove you magnificant bastard.

The Commie ‘RATS appear to be distancing their messiah from this scam. McCain needs to distance himself from it. It’s a loser and everyone knows it. America and it’s taxpayers are about to get screwed.

But John McCain must realize the crucial distinction and must use his leverage to stop a taxpayer-funded bailout, insisting instead on loans and insurance.

I think he didn't bring this up Friday because he didn't need to. It was a foreign policy debate...supposedly. McCain knows there's a domestic policy debate and I'm betting he's going to hammer this issue to death. There was no reason to shoot this bullet Friday. He was saving his ammo for the next debate.

How will making these struggling institutions take on additional debt be better than purchasing the mortgage backed securities from them? The purchase of these securities will also help stabilize the mortgage market.

As another alternative, I would contend that the purchase of preferred stock issues would be superior to loans.

McCain has shown he will not throw the necessary partisan punches to make his case. He’s about “bipartisanship because it’s about Country First”

I’ll be surprised if he does...

Free thinker ny is correct! Obama and his criminal enterprise were hoping in light of the financial crisis Mccain would dominate the foreign policy debate with the financial crisis, something Obama would feel more confident with than foreign policy which he knows nothing about. Mccain I believe was masterful, kept his cool, kept on the issues of foriegn policy which clearly made Obama sweat toward the end of the debate. I can only hope he takes the gloves off on the next debate on the economy, gives specifics on correcting it and lays the blame soley on the criminal democrates in congress and the senate dating back to Jimmy Carter.

I hope you're right. To let this issue pass, especially the gift wrapped ACORN provision, would be unconscionable.

I was pulling my hair out Friday when obama was blaming Republicans for the sub prime mess while McCain simply grimaced.

Does the mortgage market need to be stabilized, or do housing prices need to find their own bottom and houses owned by people who will pay for them?

If the tax payer is going to be burdened by this 700 billion expenditure, then why not do it in such a way as to undo some of the damage that the gov has caused?

McCain blew his biggest shot last night. It was foolish. Time is running out. Barney Frank is aware of this strategy as well.

Confidence in valuation needs to be restored.

But you can’t do that at artificially high prices—that’s just futile.

I thought that McCain should have brought up the farm bill which he voted against and Obama voted for. It’s spending that will be harder now. (Ending the ethanol subsidy did get mentioned though).

If prices are artificially high, clean books will show it & lenders will act accordingly. The effect may be a reduction to the price to bring it into line, those wishing to make the loan anyway will charge a premium or credit won't be extended to those with overvalued holdings.

This is what I fear most, if John McCain's "Country First" means "Bi-partisanship", then we're all doomed!

The Democrat's definition of 'Bi-partisanship" means the Republicans surrender their principles and values. And the Republicans have been happily letting the RATs defining the terms and issues.

The Democrat's definition of "moderate" means "Obama/Reid/Pelosi".

The Democrat's definition of 'extremist' means right-wing conservatives".

Ironically, the Democrat's definition of "liberal" means "Nobody knows what y'all talking about!".

Exactly what I was thinking. With all this dead-on dirt about the Dems being up to their eyeballs in this mess, the issue is too good to pass up, but it's also important to time your attacks perfectly.

There's still too much time between now and election day for the voters to forget...

Notice there wasn’t a crash on Friday as predicted? Notice bank lending actually increased during the week? Anyway, some of the mortgage backed securities are fraudulent - there is a reason private investors won’t buy them.

The US Government should not buy anything sight unseen, from anyone.

The Republican financial services market fortification bill is the only solution.

I certainly hope you're right. Because McCain dropped the ball there in the beginning when Obami was blaming the Bush Admn. McCain could so easily have fried his butt with exactly WHO in Congress gave us this mess when both Bush and McCain tried to stop it in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2005 and again in 2006 but didn't. He could have NAMED NAMES as to who really gave us this mess, how much Obami made off of it, and exactly WHO is still on board Obami's campaign wagon but let it pass.

The bailout has to happen, but the Repubs and McCain are trying to fix it so the taxpayer isn’t burdened with the whole thing, McCain is doing the right thing, he is opposing what the RAT proposal is. If everyone is right and the economy STOPS no one will be happy about that either.

You’re probably right, it has to happen but it didn’t have to happen. We can thank the ‘RATS and their rich donor buddies for that.
