In the Words-Mean-Things category, yesterday we got both the Associated Press and CNN distorting the words Laura Bush used to describe Sarah Palin on foreign policy. Worse, the video interview of the First Lady was right on CNN yet on its own Political Ticker blog, CNN still distorted what Laura Bush said about Palin. It makes you wonder if the folks at CNN even watch CNN?
On September 24, Political Ticker posted a story by "CNN Ticker Producer Alexander Mooney" headlined "Laura Bush says Palin lacks foreign policy experience" and started the posting out with these first lines: (bold mine)
First Lady Laura Bush told CNN Wednesday Sarah Palin lacks experience in foreign policy, but quickly added the Alaska governor is "a very quick study."
Notice my bolded emphasis of the "but quickly added"? This is a distortion. When someone says "but quickly added" it is meant to imply that the speaker thought better of their initial words and thought to quickly add something in clarification. However, the actual video does not show Laura Bush "quickly" adding anything, but going forward in an even, measured tone. She did not "quickly add" a thing.
But, even the headline is a distortion. The headline makes it seem as if this "Palin lacks foreign policy experience" topic was something that Laura Bush focused on. But it was not. In fact, she dismissed it as unimportant. Not only that, but Bush wasnt even the one that brought it up...

Even if Laura had said this.....so? What’s the First Lady’s opinion got to do with anything?
I can only hope that enough people see through this and ask themselves, what are these people so afraid of?
Let them say it. People will start to beleive it and if Palin ties Biden in the debate, then people will have a more favorable view of her. I think that the McCain campaign keeping her under wraps is part of the ploy to lower expectations of her.
Or, it could be that they have no confidence in her. She can deliver a great speech, but can she think on her feet? Thus far, the verdict is still out on that one.
Members of Congress don’t typically have a lot of foreign policy experience.
We’ve had 40 presidents, and 22 were members of Congress.
What does that tell you as far as what the American voters are most interested in?
At this point, why would anyone expect these people to play fair? The AP and CNN are the enemy. Hit them back, hard.
Ask Bill Clinton. ;)
Just remember it’s NOT news it’s CNN.
