As negotiations on a Wall Street bailout bill got back on track, the House passed a $61 billion economic stimulus bill Friday, that Democrats said was needed to help a struggling Main Street.
Democrats won the support of 41 Republicans in passing the measure on a 264 158 vote.
A number of Republicans, including GOP leaders, objected to the bill on the grounds that it was rushed through the House. Democrats sent the bill to the Rules Committee Thursday night and brought it to the floor Friday.
But Democrats had been talking about the broad outlines of their stimulus plan for months. The bill they passed Friday included $18.5 billion for transportation and infrastructure projects that Democrats said will create jobs, as well as seven weeks of additional unemployment insurance payments for the entire country, as well as an additional 13 weeks for states with high unemployment.
The bill also included $15 billion in additional Medicaid funding for states, and $3 billion for food stamps.
But the bills prospects in the Senate were unclear.
Earlier Friday, the Senate failed, by a vote of 52 42, to cut off debate on a similar Democratic stimulus bill of its own.
House Democrats said they knew going into the vote that the bill had a doubtful future in the other chamber. But Democratic aides said the politics of the perhaps-$700 billion bill to shore up the financial sector may change the dynamics of the debate, and force Senate Republicans to rethink agreeing to a bailout for Wall Street while turning down a stimulus bill with a decidedly more populist feel.
It’s dead, Jim. Pres. Bush has already promised a veto...a wise choice since everyone knows the USA is broke.
How is this a stimulus bill. It’s not. It’s a welfare bill.
Stop these crappy bills and cut the taxes.
Vote out the people who voted for this bill.
It’s NAWT MY HOUSE!!!!!

Yep, they tell us there’s a crisis, then continue on, running up the debt, as if there’s no crisis. Nut cases.
Yep, so broke that we can spend $700 billion to save Wall Street. ;-)
They have to keep doing these stimulus bills because they don’t work, except maybe to purchase votes.
Great - 7 more weeks that some deadbeats I know will put off actually looking for legitimate work... Will GW really VETO this? I'm not sure he has the backbone any more. He is the one wanting to throw nearly $1 Trillion at an issue without any real expectation that it will work...
I hope I am wrong and he VETOs the snot out of this... but I just don't have faith in him any longer.
Can’t they wait until we’re actually in a recession to try and cure the recession?
Bank bailout—$700B
AIG-$85B
Fannie and Freddie—$200B
Auto Industry—$25B
Money Market funds—$70-80B
Stimulus Package—$61B
Plus all the pork they stuffed into the budget continuing resolution they are going to pass tomorrow.
Are these people in Washington insane?
Do we have a list of who voted and who of those is up for re-election??
In the House, everyone is up for re-election, dunno about the votes.
Sounds like a great bill if what they are trying to stimulate is more unemployment. Government spending for projects and handouts is done only at the expense of private investment.
Can’t keep up,,,out of fingers,,,
Is $125? Billion for FDIC in that count ?
FDIC.gov shows about 30 banks down this year,,,
Fox? news,,,can’t remember,,,Reported 300 more that seem
to be on shakey ground ...
P.S. How much are they gunna want NEXT week ?...
“Free Mental Health Care for our representatives — $??B”
The full faith and credit of the United States would not even begin to support that expenditure.
