McCain Stops at Senate en Route to White House (McCain Stops arrives at Senate, no deal yet)

The White House meeting was in part the result of McCain's stunning pronouncement Wednesday that he would stop campaigning to return to Washington, where he had urged Bush to convene a summit to address the crisis.

But for most of the afternoon, McCain has not visibly been part of the action on the issue. He was not present when House and Senate negotiators emerged from a two-hour meeting to declare success. That announcement was made by Sen. Christopher J. Dodd (D-Conn.), chairman of the Senate Banking Committee, Sen. Robert F. Bennett (Utah) and Frank.

McCain, by contrast, spent some time in his office with several Republican colleagues, briefly stopped at Boehner's office, then left for lunch at the Capitol's Mansfield Room before returning to his office in the Russell Senate Office building.

Republican Rep. Spence Bachus said he had spoken to McCain yesterday, had breakfast with two McCain advisers this morning and spoke to McCain again immediately after today's meeting. But Bachus said, "John's not trying to call the shots for the House caucus, I can tell you that. He's just opposed to the plan in its present form."

Frank reacted angrily to Bachus' statements, insisting that lawmakers were well on their way toward an agreement they could put to a vote, and that this afternoon's meeting at the White House was largely irrelevent.

"We'll be glad to go and tell them there really isn't that much of a deadlock to break," Frank said. "But I'm always glad to go to the White House."

McCain aides expressed cautious optimism, saying that there is "no deal until there's a deal," but McCain made no comments to the reporters trailing him around the Capitol.

FoxNews is showing “new video” of all the players sitting around the table. Pelosi is to the right of President Bush. She is blinking like a strobe light and looks ready to puke. It’s way fun to watch!

There's no support for the Paulson bailout as it stands with the House GOP caucus. I'm sure McCain was briefed about the Republican alternative.

Did any senators refer to McCain as Mr President? That would rile up the obnoxious Soiled Harry Reid.

The media is gushing about Obama being there. They have totally forgotten he had to be drug there. They are all excited that he is going to make a statement after their meeting with the president. He is trying to steal McCains thunder.

I would think at this point, that McCain is inclined to not vote for this in its present form, correct?

LOL! Sarah Palin was right on the money: People are watching to see what McCain will do ... they're not doing the same for Obama.

In this story, originating from the Washington Post(!), McCain dominates. He's clearly The Man here.

Obama, meanwhile, gets two off-hand mentions, of which the last is relegated to the final paragraph and reads,

Obama arrived in Washington later in the afternoon, accompanied by one Senate staffer. Democrats cried foul when a White House list of attendees indicated that McCain planned to take a campaign aide, former Congressional Budget Office director Doug Holtz-Eakin, with him to the White House meeting.

Whiiiiiine! As if Holtz-Eakin's CBO experience isn't relevant!

Heh. Obambi couldn't shine McCain's shoes! The punk kid thinks the world revolves around him. The American people couldn't disagree more!

As usual, zerO is making them wait. You’d think they’d get tired of his always making certain he is making an entrance.

If you know what the present form is why not share it with us. There is no ‘present form’ finalized. Special low interest loans backed by insurance premiums, coupled with an energy approach to making US more secure as we grow more energy independent is what I want to see, at minimum.

Lucianne.com reporting from McCain camp: no deal by midnight tonight, no debate tomorrow. Anybody seen verification?

Perhaps he’s trying to mess with BO’s head some more.

I think they're challenging Obambi to go ahead and self-destruct. If he wants to talk up foreign policy, then he will have only himself to blame for making himself irrelevant.

“I would think at this point, that McCain is inclined to not vote for this in its present form, correct?”

I would hope McCain sticks to his guns and says NO to the DEMS on anything they try that isn’t right. Also hope he explains fully what he is voting against and why....and names names.

If the debate is a go for tomorrow night I hope McCain demands that the subject be the economy....instead of foreigh policy! Since Obama can multitask he should be ready to discuss the economy on short notice!

Tom Brokaw has already given the questions to Obama on foreign policy, so it’s too late to change their game plan.
