President Bush Calls Obama And McCain (Obama Flip-Flops, Caves In - Will Go To DC
Washington Post ^ | 9/24/2008 | Michael Abramowitz

White House spokesman Tony Fratto said President Bush called Democratic presidential hopeful Sen. Barack Obama tonight around 7:30 pm. Bush and GOP presidential hopeful nominee Sen. John McCain also spoke this afternoon, and their staffs conferred afterwards, Fratto said.

The president has invited the bicameral and bipartisan leadership, and the two senators running for president, to the White House tomorrow, "to work on driving to a bipartisan and timely soultion."

Obama has agreed to attend the meeting.

"A few moments ago, President Bush called Senator Obama and asked him to attend a meeting in Washington tomorrow, which he agreed to do," Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton said in a statement...

Which presidential candidate suspended his own campaign and put the country first? Who wanted to fix this financial mess more than anything else?

John McCain.

Sure as hell not Obama.

Obama caved. Some leadership on his part...

Obama is still clinging to wanting to debate on Friday, though.

I guess he still hasn’t learned, has he?

A commercial is all McCain will get out of this now. Sounds like they basically already have a deal done in congress. They’ll have a big photo-op meeting on Thursday afternoon to announce the deal.

The average American will just see McCain and Obama working together.

McCain looses the benefit of risking his political career to get this bailout done.

I don’t think Bush helped McCain on this one. Sorry...

Maybe so.

But, Obama’s vicious attack on McCain will not be forgotten, nor will McCain's willingness to drop everything to fix the financial mess be forgotten, either.

I think that this will be seen as a filp-flop on Obama’s part, and that he made a big mistake in the first place by not going to DC when McCain asked him to and found a way out.

All of this equals...

Obama: Not Ready To Lead. Not Ready To Be President.

"Obama caved. Some leadership on his part..."

For someone who is willing to sit down and talk with our enemies without pre-conditions, Obama showed very poor judgment in not heading to Washington to begin with. He had to be shamed into it by the President calling him. His arrogance reminds me of General McClellan's snubbing of President Lincoln.

Are McCain and Obama still on our payroll as Senators?

If so, they both should get their carcasses back to Washington and do the jobs we have been paying them to do until a solution is reached.

How many months has 0bama been running around -- tooting his own horn (and scarfing up $$$ from Fannie Mae)-- instead of being in the Senate, doing his job?

And now, he whines about simply delaying a debate while he gets his sorry --- back to work?

Want to see leadership? Look at McCain!

“Obama is still clinging to wanting to debate on Friday, though.”

He has been practicing all week and his tiny little brain can’t hold that much information too long.

In all seriousness, debates are more about how you appear than what you say. Personally, I would rather they not have them. Since they can’t be avoided, I wish the following would be how they are handled:

(1) NO AUDIENCE AT ALL. They just act as a distraction.

(2) NO TALKING HEADS FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS AFTER THE DEBATES. Let the people not the media decide who won, etc. I’m so tired of pundits telling me what to think.

(3) ALL QUESTIONS BY MODERATORS SHOULD BE ASKED OF BOTH CANDIDATES AND CANDIDATES SHOULD KNOW THE QUESTIONS BEFOREHAND. MODERATOR QUESTIONS SHOULD BE VERY GENERAL. I go weary of a biased moderator steering the debate to their boy’s way by controling the questions. Asking loaded ones only to the candidate they don’t like.

(4)HALF OF ALL DEBATE QUESTIONS SHOULD BE FROM ONE CANDIDATE TO THE OTHER WITHOUT THEM HAVING PRIOR KNOWLEDGE. This would be more interesting and allow each candidate to attempt to trip up his opponent, but also reveal something of the character of the candidate by the questions he asks.

(5) AFTER THE DEBATES THE MEDIA SHOULD BE BARED FROM THEIR SO-CALLED FACT CHECKS. The tend to spin things here also. Let a candidate refute his opponents, bad facts, not the media.

(6) MEDIA SHOULD BE BANNED FROM SOUND BITE QUOTES FOR AT LEAST 24 HOURS. If they want to report on the debate, provide an exact transcript and not snippets.

That’s my short list. Any thoughts from others?

I believe the debate is going to be on the economy and it isn't to Obama's advantage to suspend the debate...

The only "change" Obama is about is changing his mind. And then, only under pressure from the President. Not of his own volution, of course.

I sure hope McCain gets air time and credit for his voluntary action on this. And I hope people remember that obviously Obama didn't feel he would be helpful, since he said he would only come if he "thought it would help."

Obama couldn't have given us a better sound bite to remember how highly he thinks of his own leadership skills.

Guess he just figured that saving the economy instead of talking to us about how great he is, is above his "pay grade."

I actually think the debate was foreign policy but I could be wrong.

However, fixing the economic crisis is not to Obama’s advantage.

Obama can debate himself.

Obama was against NAFTA before he was against it.
Against FISA before against it.
Pro-Palestine before he was Pre-Isreal.
Pro immediate withdrawal of troops before he wanted to delay withdrawal.
Against nuclear plants before he was for it.

The one thing that irk’d me about Obama’s remarks earlier today was describing the financial crisis as the worst since the Great Depression and then concluding with “they can call me if they need me”.

I don’t think Democratic leaders in Congress want Obama to come in and stand in front of them in the spotlight (or be pushed into it by Bush’s request for him to join the leadership tomorrow).

It’s funny how you always hear 0bama talk about “republicans and democrats working together”, yet he hardly has done it himself, and seems to resist working with republicans at every turn.

As much as it disgusts me at times, McCain has always worked in a bipartisan way.

Yes, I have an even shorter list: No media "moderators". The candidates face each and ask each other questions. Some time limits on the answers and brief rules on rebuttal.

The less media involvement, the better.

Those self-important media dopes should just go away.

The Obominable One wanted to stiff the economy for his own gain.

Now, he will be part of the solution and has to own it. If he complains about the fix, he complains about himself. If complains about no bipartisan fix, he owns that too.

He’s forced to govern and take responsibility for it. Rather than throw rocks at those who do.

Actually having to do something - his worst nightmare.

And the voters have a front row seat.

Let Biden and Palin continue to make speeches on the campaign trail.

If BIDEN really wants to help the economy, he can loan Sarah his jet, and he can rent a CHRYSLER Town&Country Van.

It has enough cup holders to accomodate the media that still ‘travel’ with him.

That is why Obama didn’t want to leave the campaign trail while McCain went back to DC.

McCain asked him to go, Obama said, “Who’s gonna take your place at the debate?”

McCain said, “Sarah will. Who’s gonna take yours?”

Obama said, “uh...uh....uh..... call me if you need me, John”

I can see benefits in both scenarios. If Biden and Palin go out on the campaign trail alone, agreed “No contest”. OTOH, if Sarah Palin goes to Washington with McCain, what better chance for her to see and learn how Congress really operates or DOESN'T operate. I can see, though, Reid barring her from the chambers.

Gee, I'm getting cynical. :-(
